In the ethical considerations category, assignments are split between two primary foci—the first engages students in the institutional ethics of using LLMs in undergraduate classrooms and the second attends to the ethical implications of LLMs and their outputs.

This assignment asks undergraduate students to critically annotate an existing popular media item using Kapoor & Narayanan’s “18 Pitfalls” framework. This framework helps students to reflect critically on media hype relating to AI, and gives them language to assist them in identifying, labeling, and explaining examples of hype to potential readers. In creating their annotated articles, students gain practice applying their critical AI and media literacy skills, which are skills they can apply to their own lives as they engage with media about generative AI and strive to be thoughtful, critical users (or not) of generative AI products.

This small-group presentation assignment aims to further students’ critical AI literacy (Bali 2023) by introducing them to the affordances of various AI tools, while also raising awareness of their risks and limitations. Each group is responsible for researching and testing a different AI platform and sharing their findings with the class. These presentations focus on the function of the tools, but also turn a critical lens onto AI companies’ profit motives, data transparency, and privacy protections.
Upon submission, each proposed entry receives at least two anonymous peer reviews. Reviews are consolidated by the editor and provided to the author for revision purposes, if revision is recommended by reviewers. WiSER uses a double blind review process, so please de-identify submissions.
