People nowadays face life stress in every shape, whether it was mentally or physically. Speaking of the mental stress many people are victims of it, as it can eat you alive and even some people harm themselves physically because of it. A study suggests that up to seventy percent of American adults faced at least one trauma during their lifetime, and as a result many of those Americans subsequently suffered from emotional stress and anger disorder. Due to the huge number of people world widely suffer from anger disorder it made it substantial to psychologists to pay a great attention on it. The researches and studies in this paper are mainly examining the causes, symptoms, and therapies of anger disorder. However, the great variety of causes of the intermittent explosive disorder increased the studies on this disorder, and I have approached to many reliable database articles related to it. Furthermore, examining the role of psychology in curing patients with anger disorder has mainly taken place in this paper, and it is aimed from it to demonstrate that the field of psychology is the foundation of treating patients with aggressive behavior. 92% of patients who suffered from intermittent explosive disorder, and were helped by medication and psychotherapy treatments are relieved from the symptoms of the disorder. Therefore, the study suggests that anger disorder in most of the cases can be treated by involving both psychology and medicine fields.

Frequently, people respond to traumatic or tragic situations that they were forced to face during their lifetime with anger and sorrow. However, when the aggression occurs more often due to trivial reasons and becomes a habit, and the sudden episodes of unwarranted anger begins, it must be considered as a matter of concern. The tendency to react violently and explode into a rage despite a lack of apparent provocation or reason is a good indication that the person might be suffering from Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED). The disorder can be characterized by hostility, impulsivity, and aggressive outbursts. World widely, there are a lot of individuals who are incapable to resist aggressive impulses that are often resulted in an aggressive physicals behaviors or/and verbal. People who are suffering from Intermittent Explosive Disorder tend to emotionally hurt individuals or physically harm them, and that gives the patient a sense of relief and satisfaction. The focal points of the essay are the causes of IED, emotional and physical symptoms that may appear on people with IED, the risks that the disorder can cause to the patient, and lastly the efficient therapies and treatments of intermittent explosive disorder. A statistic have shown that 7.3% of adults at some point throughout their lifetimes are affected by Intermittent Explosive Disorder, which is equate to 11.5-16 million Americans, and 67.8% of them were involved in direct aggression against another person (Look, McCloskey, & Coccaro, 2015, p. 531). Therefore, psychiatrists and whomever are concerned in the field of psychology have put a lot of effort in diagnosing, studying, and researching methods to provide patients with the efficient therapies. The causes of the disorder can be associated with environmental, physical, and genetic factors and that makes diagnosing Intermittent Explosive Disorder challenging and not as easy comparing to any other mental disorder. What is even more, there are some exceptional cases where the appearance of aggressive and impulsive behavior is considered normal and expected as well. One of those exceptional cases is the change of behavior during teenage years because the emotional and physical changes occur at a rapid pace among teenagers. For this reason, it is important for parents to be well aware and educated in dealing with teenagers. Poor awareness among parents and teachers in dealing with teenagers can cause both parents and the teenage harmful consequences. Additionally, male are more likely to act in a hostile and aggressive manner than women. It is not only an exceptional case where the appearance of such behavior is expected, but it can be classified as one of the risk factors of having IED in the future. A study was done in Istanbul among 4957 students at 10th grade to examine the differences between female and male student. The result of the study suggests that 52.7% of male students were involved in school problems and they were more likely to behave mean and aggressive with their classmates and teachers as well. In contrast, female have higher psychological problems such as depression and anxiety, which may also be related with suicidal thoughts but they were behaving much politely than male students. (Evren, Bozkurt, Demirci, Evren, Can, & Umut, 2015, p. 82). So, based on the study it can be concluded that the chances of suffering from IED are higher among men than women. Overall, the variation in the causes of anger disorder and determining whether the symptoms are temporal or permanent lead to a result, and which is for the IED therapies to give a better result the interference of both medical and psychological field is required. The causes of intermittent explosive disorder are extremely broad and the disorder can be caused by several factors, which can be determined by examining and conducting researches on people with anger disorder. One of the most common factors is the impact of the childhood background and the atmosphere of the environment that the person was raised in. “Research suggests that chronic adverse circumstances in childhood are associated with neurobiological alterations, which may in part explain the association with negative outcomes in adulthood, including psychopathology, aggression, and suicidal behavior” (Fanning, Meyerhoff, Lee, & Coccaro 2014, 16). The result of the study proves the existence of the relationship between childhood background and future aggression behavior. Therefore, there is a great chance that adults who are suffering from IED had to deal with traumatic events while they were children. For instance, children who have suffered from physical or emotional abuse, violence, or rose by an addicted parents are more likely to be incapable to manage their anger. Due to the fact that, they are hiding the feeling of hurt, sorrow, and pain deep inside them which lead them to transfer these feelings to anger and the tendency of hurting others. Moreover, rising up in an environment where harsh punishments are carried out by parents might also cause the aggressive behavior in children. A Bandura’s Bobo Doll Experiment (BBDE) was done among 73 children who were aged less than 3 years and they were shown dolls being punched and kicked later on the kids were given the dolls. Eventually, the children imitated the aggressive manner and treated the doll in an abusive way they even imitated exact behaviors and repeated words used by models. (Cacioppo & Freberg, 2013, p. 542). So, children are frequently observing and witnessing their parents being aggressive and mean, which will in the future make the children exhibit these same traits that they were observing when they were little.

In addition, one of environmental causes of IED is being under pressure whether emotionally or physically. A study was conducted among students before the end of the semester because it is the most time where students are overloaded with school works and preparing for finals. The result of the study showed that %78 of the students, who were chosen as samples of the study, their stress and nervousness rate were higher than normal and that was transformed in behaving aggressively with their classmates (Lieberman, Thompson, Caruso, McClung, & Mahoney, 2014, p. 949). People who are often overloaded by tasks and assignments whether it is school tasks or job duties, of course their brain won’t resist being overloaded all the time. Consequently, that will affect the brain negatively and it will start showing up emotionally such as transmitting it to an aggressive behavior. Though there are many other factors that can cause IED, researches and studies support the fact that the impact of the environment plays an important role in causing IED, and that can be proven from the great number of patients who suffer from anger disorder due to the traumatic childhood events that they had to pass through. Researchers conducted studies on the causes of IED and what was fascinating about the results is that genetic component might be also a factor of causing the disorder, and also allow it to be passed down from parents to children. According to Cacioppo and Freberg (2013) a study suggests that children who were bullied and carry SS genotype were more likely to face mean emotional problems, than bullied children who carry LL or SL genotype (Cacioppo & Freberg, 2013, p. 95). The suggestion that can be concluded from the study is that not only physical diseases can be caused due to the gene construction, but mental disorders can be caused by genetic component as well. There are other cases where genetic construction can be the reason in causing impulsivity behavior. A study that was conducted by the twins concluded that correlations of aggression are higher among monozygotic twins genes than dizygotic pairs (Cacioppo, and Freberg, 2013, p. 375). So, the construction of genes can also be a reason behind aggressive behavior, which will eventually lead in causing IED in the future. In addition to that, usually physical appearance plays a substantial role in the person’s mood and psychological condition because individuals believe the fact that people would judge them based on their outer look if they do not know them. So, genetic construction can be the reason in giving birth to a child with physical deformities which usually affects them psychologically as well. There is a widespread case in India which is that women usually suffer from acne not only during their teenage years, but even when they are adults. A study was conducted among Indian women who are suffering from acne during their adulthood, to examine how acne can affect women psychologically. The result was that discomfort, anger, and unwilling to intermingle with the other gender appeared among adult females who suffer from acne (Pruthi & Babu, 2012, p. 27). Therefore, the study illustrates how the gene of acne that is transformed from parents to children in India, can negatively impact them not only physically, but psychologically as well. What is even more, in those specific cases it can be proven that some type of psychological disorders treatments to be successful it must be concerned in both sympathetic approach by doctors, and basic psychosomatic treatment must involve too.

Determining the main cause of IED is important and usually takes place when the therapist diagnosis the patient by questioning him/her to get to explore the surface of the aggressive behavior, and what is the patient trying to hide by behaving such way. The determination of the disorder’s cause will make the process of consultation much easier and
