My research topic is whether Gun control is necessary and helpful. Gunpowder is one of the most important and famous inventions in the world since it is used in weapons ending the melee-weapon era. In ancient times, people use the arrow, the sword, and the spear in wars. When the gun first appeared, it became widespread and the most powerful weapon around the world. With the optimization of human civilization, the wars are terminated, so guns now serve as the tool of self-defense. But when some bad guys or terrorists get a gun, then it’s not self-defense, it will become killing, even turning a crime into a mass murder. Thousands of Millions of people are killed by guns every year. I think maybe not only me care about this, many people, not only the normal people like me, but also the government will consider this question seriously. There are two voices of Gun Control in the society which are supporting the gun control or forbidding the gun control.

Firstly, let’s see gun control from the angle of supportive. Due to the copious death caused by gun, Dreadful and immoral, the use of guns has to be strictly regulated in order to maintain the consistent development of humanity and human’s safety. The distribution of guns among individuals has the potentiality to cause a mass murder. Almost every day, the medias, such as TV programs, online news reports, and newspapers, include a news or articles about the gun's case. In other words, the murders, involving the guns, happen around the world at an extraordinary frequency. More importantly and fearfully, the number of crimes issued by the use of guns is increasing dramatically. According to the Collaborators, there are 12,800 deaths, caused by gun shots, whereas 180,000 deaths in 2013(GBD 2013 Mortality and Causes of Death). What’s more, David Frum who is a contributing editor at The Daily Beast and a CNN contributor wrote an article called “Are Gun Accidents ‘Vary’?”. He rejected two claims which by Robert VerBruggen who offered a substantial reply at National Review Online. The claim from Robert was that There isn't have a lot of safety problem with guns. Or, in Robert's words: "The fact is that gun accidents are statistically very rare…”, and David used some data like “In 2007, the United States suffered some 15,000-19,000 accidental shootings.”, and “The number killed in gun accidents is 20% higher than the total number killed in all U.S. civil aviation accidents.” (David Frum) to indicate that the death due to the gun is not vary, it’s plenty that we need to pay attention. Meanwhile, Congressional Research Service states that the number of gun sales is roughly twice as many guns per capita in the United States as in 1968: more than 300 million guns in all (CRS). Apparently, the firearms cases' quantity rises with the increasing number of the gun's possessors. Phoebe Bovey who published an article called “It’s time to ban Guns. Yes, all of them” in New Republic said: “Ban Guns, meanwhile, is not discriminatory in this way. It’s not about dividing society into “good” and “bad” gun owners. It’s about placing gun ownership itself in the “bad” category.” (Phoebe Bovey). Forming a more perfect union and providing common defense, the government ought to forbid the public use of guns so as to obliterate the guns' murders amidst its citizens.

The wide performance of gun cause panics among the society due to the lethality of guns. As above mentioned, guns' crimes are the daily incident in the United States. Unfortunately, schools are not an exception of the shooting locations but a general place. On April 20, 1999, two high school students in Columbine High School killed twelve of their classmates and one faculty member with rifles. After sentencing those innocent lives to death, they committed suicide. On March 21, 2005, a student who was only 16 years old killed five students in Red Lake High School in Minnesota (TIME Magazine). Even cannot the Amish school in Pennsylvania avoid the tragedy---a man with a gun killed six girls and then ended his own life in 2006 (BBC News). On Feb 14, 2008, an armed man with gun raided the Northern Illinois University and randomly shot more than 160 students and teachers, causing six people dead and more than ten people harmed, after this bloodbath, he killed himself (National Public Radio). On April 16, 2007, the deadliest campus shooting in the United States' history occur at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg: 32 people were killed along with 15 people were wounded by a 23-year-old international student from South Korean (Herring Chris). While those shooters continuously intrude the campus, many people in the United States consider the school the most dangerous place for their posterities and themselves. According to Magnus Health, the schools are supposed to have a drill once a month (Kathryn Sloop). Ironically, it is the same amount of required drills that people need to practice during the Cold War time (David Greenburg). Unmistakably, people are taking risks to send their kids to an educational institution, which they do not have the responsibility to experience. Only will a law that abolishes publics using guns be able to eliminate people's concerns. Supporting a bright future of the United States and respecting American social ethics, the citizens of the United States deserve to live in an adequately protected country instead of a place where everyone has the possibility to be armed with offensive weapons.

Guns are invented to be sinful. Though many modern weapons are gradually created, guns are still a category of weapon that means to harm and kill others. Since a government continues to permit the use of guns among the ordinary people, this government does not establish the justice for people but the decent reason for horrific crimes. Without checking one's background, people can buy a rifle at the age of eighteen while they can purchase a handgun when reaching 21. When a person wants to accomplish a wicked purpose, he or she will carry the gun on the street. However, people cannot affirm whether a pedestrian is armed with guns or not because the handgun is small enough to hide. In other words, it is difficult or impossible for people to realize the potential danger soaking into their lives. By now, seven terrorist attacks have ruined the stability of American society (Wm. Robert Johnston). The bullets from the market in a free enterprise system take away innocent lives; it is the government that permits the sinfulness to shatter over a sovereign territory. Because of those sinfulness, people begin to distrust each other. As a result, people store their guns in the basements, living rooms, and bedrooms where people can obtain the rest. In this way, people become relentless, and sins are accepted. Lack of the humanity, the society will suffer a digression---people may be back to the ancient time in which people killed people for honors and statuses. Established by the government, social ethics cannot be contradicted human's basic moral standards so as to strengthen the humanity and advocate the justice. People usually cannot control themselves, especially when they germinate a thought of crime and have already hold a gun. So if we can’t control people’s thought and movement, the only way to reduce the death from the gun is to control the gun, control the people from outside. If guns disappear from individual's lives, sins brought by gun's murders can be eradicated. The government needs to sustain its original purpose and revise the future goal to defend the humanity, eliminating everything contrary to the righteousness. Gun symbolizes the source of the sins in the contemporary society, so the government needs to prevent gun's usage diminishing human civilization.

On the contrary, the rest of sources I found which accounts for the major parts of all the sources against Gun control. So let’s see it from another perspective. In the United States, many laws are governing the use of guns. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution states, "A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." The United States is a country that guarantees its citizens life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Indeed, the Second Amendment protects the individual right to own guns. However, the guns are only allowed for a legal purpose: self-defense within homes. Both permission and restrictions obey the unalienable rights of people, ensuring people’s liberty and protecting their safety. Any passaged laws cannot be against the idea of Constitution. Apparently, the gun-control laws, nowadays, are acceptable whereas more gun-control laws may violate the words of Constitution.

“Eliminating guns would have no such effect because if somebody wants to kill, he will find a weapon to achieve his “destructive goal”; there is, it is said, more than one way to skin a cat” (Frank Zimring). The primary reason triggers the death of individuals is not the gun but people themselves, people’s dark sides, gun is just a tool, a way to reveal the evil under the surface of people. Gun control is not that useful because it is not the gun that causes the death; it is human themselves. Although guns trigger the injury and the death, the petrol bombs not only dreadful than guns but also are one of the most catastrophic weapons in the contemporary world. Meanwhile, the procedure of manufacturing petrol bombs is accessible for the ordinary people--it only needs a rubber wheel and a glass of oil. The government can ban neither oil nor rubber oils. Instead, people need those materials in their lives just as the same as they need guns to defend themselves. Only can a gun help people obtain the survival chance in the terrorist attacks, which usually involve explosives and bullets. If people are forbidden to own guns in the United States, the government will face the tremendous loss of innocent people since people cannot protect themselves efficiently when in danger. Living in a world that is full of crimes and sins, people need use guns as the positive way protecting themselves from the threat. In 2008, a Canadian girl Amanda went to Somalia but was kidnapped and had been enslaved for about 460 days. During this time, she was beaten brutally--She was raped and forced to gave birth to a child. The kidnappers demanded 300 thousand dollars as the ransom, but Amanda’s family cannot afford such a huge amount of money. Desperate and trying to escape, Amanda decided to jump out of a window, which was four meters high. She succeeded, but when she reached a local village, people are afraid of helping her. Unfortunately, she was taken by kidnappers again, and they beat her more cruelly. After 460 days, In November 25, 2009, the 460th day after Amanda being kidnapped, Amanda’s family finally brought enough money to release Amanda. This event stunned the whole world and made people think deeply. What if Amanda had a weapon like a gun? Maybe this horrible incident could be avoided since Amanda was able to use a gun to protect herself. Apparently, guns sometimes are essential and required for people to protect themselves in the particular condition.

On the other hand, if we analyze the relationship between the data of the number of murders caused by guns and the amount of the gun ownership, we will have new discovery. In the video called “The Truth About Gun Control” which was made by Stefan Molyneux, he provided a lot of data that really refreshed my view of gun murder. US homicide rate from 1994 to 2012 decreases from 9 to 5, according to the theory that more guns, more crime, we can say that the number of guns must be declined from 1994 to 2012, if we think in this way, we are truly wrong, the fact is that the number of gun increase from about 200 million to 300 million and even reach 344 million which more than people. Moreover, the video provided Top States by Murder Rate in 2002, compared gun ownership, the chart was conspicuous. For example, the district of Columbia had very few guns and it’s only five-point two percent gun ownership which was far less than the Louisiana’s gun ownership which was 45.6%, However, what made people shocked was that though the district of Columbia had such a few guns, the murder rate was 46.2% which was far higher than Louisiana’s 13.2%. It’s not a special case, It’s universal.

After researching so many sources, they changed my original opinion of guns. I think Gun Control is not necessary and won’t work that effectively like what we anticipated because the initiator of these murder is not gun, it’s human, and if human selves don’t change, murder still happen. The gun control does not require the excessive regulations since the legislative views have applied the Constitution to control the ownership of guns. While people can use a gun for self-defense, the gun is not the only weapon that has the ability to commit murder. Obviously, the government cannot ban all “weapons”, so the use of the gun does not require the redundant control. However, since the Constitution commands the government to best ensure the individual freedom and public interest at the same time, the government ought to put some actions to prevent the crimes, accidents, and terrorist attack. Gun is a frightful weapon, but the present is not the appropriate time to disallow the common distribution of guns. Also, in order to guarantee people’s life and liberty, protecting them from violence and threats, government still needs to concentrate on improving the citizens' moral standards and enhancing the capability of the common defense.
