President Donald Trump was recently inaugurated in January of 2017. Since then, he has already begun taking action and working on his plans for the United States. Much of these plans have created a mass controversy nationwide. There are many rallies and protests sparked by Donald Trump’s plans for our country. Donald Trump’s plans to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, as well as other plans he has for our country, will affect millions. Donald Trump, with his erratic temperament, is showing signs of an authoritarian executive leader (Orentlicher, Remnick). Many fear his Presidency and the results of his actions, including women, immigrants and children. President Donald Trump’s actions as well as future plans, such as immigration policy and planned parenthood, will not benefit the United States of America.

Donald Trump has already begun reinventing the Presidency. His moves on trade, immigration, and foreign policy have honored his campaign promises. He has begun working on the projects that he promised throughout the election process. Although he is working on his plans and has begun to act as President, questions still arise about whether or not this type of Presidency will be effective for our nation. A Presidency based on creative destruction will simply exhaust the entire political system rather than making it stronger. After the first week of his Presidency, it was questioned in a CNN article, “How Donald Trump Changed the Presidency in 7 Days”, whether President Donald Trump could “successfully govern a complicated and divided country without bringing his erratic behavior under control” (Collinson). Without having your own person under control, how can said person run a nation correctly and efficiently while keeping the wellbeing of the citizens in mind. A rash mind does not necessarily think of how things will play out in the long run. President Donald Trump immediately set his plans into action the day he was inaugurated. He signed his first bill into effect his first day in office, just moments after he was sworn in. Although this first bill was not a controversial one that would drastically change our way of life, he still acted fairly quickly. The bill allowed retired General James Mattis to serve as defense secretary. A CNN article, "President Donald Trump Signs First Bill Into Law”, stated that the bill waived the legal requirement that James Mattis had to be out of the military for seven years before he could serve as defense secretary of the United States. Already, Trump is finding ways around the rules. Although the bill has been signed and the legal requirement has been waived, Mattis has since been confirmed by the senate in order to serve.

President Donald Trump has not only begun signing bills into law the day he was inducted into office, but he has also proposed to devote large amounts of federal spending into a project that will deport all of the undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States. The government spending he is planning will also go to funding the construction of a wall in between the United States and Mexico to prevent undocumented immigrants from coming back into America. Donald Trump planned to make an announcement during a visit to the Department of Homeland Security, regarding the wall, which he mentioned publicly on his Twitter account. President Donald Trump’s plans for building the wall will affect millions. It will burden lives and put strains on families. Although there is large talk that work on the wall will begin soon, there are actually many legal obstacles that could pose a threat to construction. These obstacles include environmental laws that can postpone and stump production. Many environmentalists are on the opposing sides of production due to the fact that it will drastically change our nation. Trump plans to issue two executive orders during his visit to the Department of Homeland Security. One of these executive orders will require the Department to publicly detail what aid is currently directed to mexico. This is so that Donald Trump can support his claim that the people of Mexico are putting a strain on our nation and its resources. Trump’s second executive order is to work to eliminate “sanctuary cities”. A sanctuary city is a city where municipal governments refuse to hand over undocumented immigrants to federal authorities in order to protect them. Officials have reported that Donald Trump will wait until later after this visit before he takes action on visas and refugees.

Donald Trump’s ideas have created a nationwide controversy. Building a wall between the United States and Mexico will not only divide two countries but it will divide our own nation as well. There are two viewpoints: that immigrants are to blame for our economic troubles which is why they need to be deported, and that we are a nation of immigrants. Our whole nation is made up of immigration. We have stood by the fact that we are the “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave”. To change our whole nations philosophy will drastically affect the United States of America. Without immigration we would not be the nation that we are today. We would not be made up of the hundreds of different cultures that we are today. Our cultural diversity is what makes our country so amazing. We are a land for escape and refuge and have been for centuries. By deporting those who come here seeking opportunity and education will rid us of the great name we have made for our country.

Many women and immigrants are taking a stand against Trump’s disrespectful statements and beliefs. Many, outraged by the election turnout, even boycotted his inauguration. Among the large population that stood against this monumental day in history was California Representative Barbara Lee. Lee stated that she would not be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration, in an interview, but instead would spend the day “preparing for the resistance”. Her reason for boycotting the event was that President Donald Trump “rode racism, sexism, xenophobia and bigotry”. Aside from just women and immigrants and in addition to Representative Barbara Lee, several other democratic house leaders also took a stand against the inauguration. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Jared Huffman of California and Katherine Clark of Massachusetts stood alongside Barbara Lee. It is the start of President Donald Trump’s election and he already has a large population that are not in favor of his presidency. His disrespectful manner and beliefs as well as having no personal regard for human well being may ultimately cost him re-election and the citizens of the United States.

The Republican party planned an effort to defund Planned Parenthood. This effort concerned the White House, leading them to offer a proposal. In a New York Times article, “Trump Tells Planned Parenthood Its Funding Can Stay if Abortion Goes”,The White House proposed preserving federal payments to Planned Parenthood but only if they no longer provide abortions. The group receives around $500 million annually in federal funding from the government. In response to the proposal, they declined. The money Planned Parenthood receives each year helps to pay for women health services; it does not pay for abortions. It was then suggested that there could possibly be an increase in federal earmarks if they no longer provided abortions. President Donald Trump is offering money to abandon women their health care services. Millions of American women actively use Planned Parenthood as a resource and a safe place to go in seek of medical treatment. To shut that down is immoral. Trump should be acting in regards to the citizens, not against them by taking away critical health care services that help millions each year.

In addition to the women and immigrants, children are also fearful of Donald Trump’s Presidency. In a video, published by CNN, a series of children sit in front of a camera one by one and speak their mind about the Presidency. They direct their thoughts at Donald Trump to make it known that they are afraid and are questioning his values. They express their fears and concerns regarding Trump’s Presidency and deportation. Each one expresses how much they will miss their friends and family. Most children are too busy playing with their friends and their toys to worry and pay attention to politics, but these children are already exposed to it. For a child to worry about the effect that their President's action will leave on our nation, if he does not make changes within himself, is concerning. A child at a young age should not have to worry about the messy politics that make up our country. This video shows a younger demographic showing concern for the Presidency which usually is not the case. It is important for our nation to see that this Presidency not only affects immigrants but it affects the children who were born here and are citizens but will have to leave because their parents are immigrants. These children feel that Donald Trump is working against them when he should be working with them. No child should feel unsafe in a nation that proclaims it is the “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave”. Not enough people think of a child’s perspective and this video does just that. Coming from such a widespread, popular news source, such as CNN, this video reached a large population and touched the hearts of many.

The Constitution is partly to blame for the Presidency. The Constitution’s design for the elective branch increases the possibility of poor decision making by the President. Opting for a single executive, rather than having a multi-person executive, allows the President to feel too powerful. Although we use a system of checks and balances, there still is only one president. Having a single executive increases the likelihood of misguided presidential decision making. President Donald Trump’s temperament has raised several red flags suggesting that he may misuse the power he is given in office. Having only a single executive risks having an authoritarian executive who could misuse the power of the presidency as well as the power of the Oval Office. Donald Trump having an erratic temperament has enforced the idea that we are risking him becoming an authoritarian executive. If there were two executives over one, they would be there to keep each other in check. By adopting a multi-person executive, a two person presidency, we would promote a more effective political system. Two is better than one, there would be more ideas and a second opinion on everything. Partisan conflict would defuse, which is fueled by our single executive. Having a bipartisan presidency in our country would address many concerns about the 2016 election.

Donald Trump has been rather unfocused with his work and outrageous as he has just recently taken office. In an article, “On the Inauguration of Donald Trump: Preserve, Protect, and Defend”, it was made known that some may argue that Donald Trump is on the rise and will soon take the responsibility of holding office. Some believe once he surrounds himself with the right crowd would allow him to be even more “competent, knowledgeable, steady and ethical”. A person cannot simply change who they are in a split second; it takes time. Donald Trump has already shown us that he is adamant about his plans to build the wall as well as deporting immigrants. He publicizes this actively on his Twitter account and stands by his motto “Make America Great Again”. Donald Trump has, thus far, been following through with his campaign promises and will continue to do so.

It was reported that Michael Flynn, National Security Adviser, had inappropriate conversations with Russia’s ambassador before President Donald Trump had taken office. Trump’s aids and allies urged him to rid the White House of Flynn. According to an article published on Politico, “Why Donald Trump Let Michael Flynn Go”, Trump had caused “chaos in a nascent presidency and raised further questions about the President's ability to handle national security matters in the first month of his tenure”(Dawsey, Isenstadt. Palmeri, Dawsey, Stokols, Sameulsohn, Geller, Nussbaum, Bender, Granfield, Kabaservice, Latimer, Grunwald). The Washington Post reported that the Trump administration was well aware of the claims against General Flynn but they had chosen not to act. Donald Trump was reluctant to get rid of General Flynn because he does not like to “fire people who are loyal”. The President was dishonorable by choosing not to act for quite some time. It is in his job description to act in the best interest of our country and its citizens and he failed to do that for weeks. General Flynn sent in a resignation letter and was let go from the Trump Administration after much hesitation. The President should not be indecisive when it comes to important matters such as this one. Our country needs someone who is sure of their decisions, who can lead us in the right direction.

Newly inaugurated President Donald Trump has already begun acting as our executive leader. He has begun developing his plans for the wall that will divide the United States and Mexico. With all of the protests and rallies challenging Donald Trump and his beliefs and values, we can see he is not favored by the majority of the population. Women, children and immigrants make up the demographic that are not in favor of Trump. They are fearful of Donald Trump and his plans to “Make America Great Again”. As a result of the large controversy dividing our nation, President Donald Trump will not benefit the United States of America or the citizens within it.
