
Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. Put into much simpler terms, abortion is murder. The fact of the matter is that even though the child has not yet been born into the world, there is life inside of the mother’s womb. No matter the rationale behind why someone would want an abortion to take place, the life of a child is being terminated. The worst part about it is that the unborn child does not yet have a voice to be able to argue for and defend itself. One of the main arguments that needs to be considered when thinking about the topic of abortion is when does life begin? Does life occur from the moment of conception or when the child is physically brought into the world? Does an unborn child have the same rights that every other human has? Or do they not have any rights because it is an embryo that doesn’t physically exist in the world outside of the mother’s womb? Each of these questions are just a few of what need to be considered when approaching the topic of abortion and why it should or should not be illegal. The argument on this topic has been going on for decades and surprisingly enough, the arguments being presented have changed very little if any at all. I believe that an unborn child should have the same rights that every other human has because it is alive and deserves the chance to live a prosperous life. Abortion should be illegal because it is murder and a child is being robbed of its inalienable right to life. 

When you begin to consider the debate of abortion, it is important to begin with the origins of where the topic became such a heated subject of debate that it has become over the past few decades. The topic of abortion came up in a Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade. There was a lady who became pregnant and went to Texas. In Texas, an abortion could only take place in cases of rape or incest. The woman lied and said she had been raped to get an abortion, but there was no police documentation of rape so she wasn’t given an abortion. After this took place, she tried to get an abortion illegally and found out that the police had shut down the unauthorized clinic. This is when she decided to file a case with the Supreme Court. The Court decided in a 7-2 vote that this woman’s ninth and fourteenth amendment rights were violated (FindLaw). This is where abortion became legal in the United States. 

The ninth amendment of the Constitution states that “the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people” (Constitution). This means that even if the Constitution fails to specifically state a right, the government has no power to abridge that right. However, if that is the case, shouldn’t the unborn child have the same rights also? The rights of the unborn child aren’t specifically outlined in the Constitution, so shouldn’t it be defended under the ninth amendment as well? The fourteenth amendment of the Constitution states that “nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws” (Constitution). Life, liberty, and property are the three inalienable rights that every individual is entitled to. These rights are extended to the unborn child inside of its mother’s womb as well. When an abortion takes place, and a child is murdered, they are being robbed of their inalienable right to life. This is a direct violation of the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution. Due process of law is a constitutional guarantee that all legal proceedings and actions will be fair and there will not be any arbitrary laws (Strauss). As for due process of law, the unborn child is being completely robbed of their fair treatment through the judicial system because it does not acknowledge the child. The judicial system believes that the unborn child has no rights and therefore should not be protected under the law. This goes against so much of what this country stands for and is yet another reason as to why abortion should be illegal. 

Abortion is debated on the grounds of religion as well as politics. No matter what way you look at it, however, it should be clear to see that abortion needs to be illegal. It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception. There are four empirical attributes of life, and human zygotes display all four of them. The four empirical attributes of life are growth, reproduction, metabolism, and response to stimuli (Agresti). Life begins from the moment of conception; it has been scientifically proven and is common knowledge. An abortion is the procedure of terminating a pregnancy which is killing a human being that is alive inside of its mother’s womb. Isn’t this murder? The last time I checked, murdering someone is a felony. Why is abortion any different? Is it because the child isn’t physically in the world? There is life flowing through the embryo from the moment of conception and to terminate its life is wrong. It’s murder. If there is life within the human being that is growing inside of the mother’s womb, shouldn’t it be cut and dry that murder is taking place? To take away the life of an unborn child is just wrong and it should not be allowed. This is only one powerful reason as to why abortion should be illegal. 

An abortion is, sadly, a very common procedure. Women all around the United States and around the world get abortions every year. Whether they get an abortion legally or somehow figure out a way to get one illegally, a lot of them take place each year. It is estimated that about one in three women will have an abortion at some point in their lifetime. This number is extremely high and quite sad honestly. So many unborn children are being robbed of the chance to live their lives and so many of their rights are being violated through abortions. In 2015, it was estimated that approximately 906,000 abortions took place. From 1973 to 2011, approximately 53 million legal abortions took place in the United States (U.S. Abortion Statistics). With these many abortions taking place in the United States alone, I can only imagine how many abortions took place worldwide. Also, the abortions documented in this research are only legal abortions that took place. There’s no possible way to tell how many abortions took place because there were certainly a lot of illegal abortions that took place as well. There are women out there who want to get an abortion and for whatever reason can’t afford it, so they choose to go ahead and kill their child anyway through an illegal abortion. It’s quite a shame that a woman would want to kill the unborn child, but she is also putting her life in danger as well if she were to get an abortion illegally. Whether the abortion happens legally or illegally, it should be illegal. 

The process and procedure of an abortion is very gruesome and quite painful to read about. There are a few different ways in which an abortion can take place. There is a medicinal abortion where the woman will take pills or some form of medicine that will kill the unborn child inside of her womb. Another form of abortion is a surgical procedure. The surgical abortion is a complicated process that is horrid and inhumane. The woman is given a medicine called Digoxin. The child will drink the medicine inside of the womb and will overdose on it. The mother will sometimes be able to feel the child inside of her struggling as it dies in the womb. The death of the child can take up to 48 hours, so it is a torturous process that the child must endure. That alone is wrong. It is being proven that the child is being killed; murder is taking place. How is this legal? As if this isn’t bad enough, the procedure isn’t even finished yet. After the child dies inside of the mother’s womb, it is removed through suction from a vacuum and from the use of forceps and other sharp medical tools also. The vacuum is used to try and physically suck the child out of its mother’s womb. If this doesn’t work, the physician will take his forceps and begin to rip the child apart. This is so inhumane and just completely and utterly wrong. The physician will begin by grabbing the child’s legs and arms and ripping them from its body and extracting the body parts. After the child’s body parts, have been removed, the head of the child will be crushed and taken out also. If this doesn’t remove all the parts, the physician will give the woman an anesthesia to put her to sleep. While she is asleep, the physician will physically press into her stomach to remove any other parts by forcing them out of the woman (Johnson). It should really be quite impossible for someone to read about the procedure and process of an abortion and what takes place and then can say that it should be legal. Something this inhumane should be unanimous that it should be illegal. I don’t know how people can read about what happens and not feel remorse for the child. It is being murdered inside of its mother’s womb and not even peacefully. The mother can feel the child struggling as it dies inside of her stomach. This is yet another reason as to why abortion should be illegal. 

When considering the argument of abortion, I personally feel that it should be cut and dry illegal. However, I know that that is simply not the case. There are a lot of different angles and perspectives that must be taken into consideration and dealt with. For this reason, it is very important to examine the counter arguments on this topic and see what the opposition says. The number one argument that pro-choice individuals use is that abortion is a woman’s fundamental right to make decisions regarding her body. It is not the government’s place to delegate and decide what a woman should do with her body (Why Abortion Should be Legal). I can see and understand why people feel this way. I agree to an extent that as individual citizens, we all ought to be able to decide what we do with our body. In fact, it is our body so we should get to make all of our own decisions. But that is just for our body. The child inside of a woman’s body is its own self and should not be robbed of a chance at life because the woman wants to kill it. The child is hers, but it is not her decision to kill that child. The unborn child inside of her deserves a chance at life and should not be killed in the womb. Also, there is another time where I can see an abortion being legal. That is in the case of rape. My heart hurts for a woman who is raped. I hate it so much and honestly die at the thought of it. A woman who is raped did not choose to have something like that forced upon her. If she becomes impregnated, that was not her choice to have it happen in the first place. But with that said, it wasn’t the child’s choice for something like that to happen either. The child should not have to suffer and die because of someone else’s cruel decision. My heart goes out to all women who get raped and especially the ones who become pregnant afterwards; but it still should not give them the right to kill the child that is currently living inside of them. The child inside of her could be one of the biggest blessings that she has ever received, and even though she did not choose to have the child given to her, she should not be able to choose to have the child killed either. 

Another reason as to why abortion should be illegal is because it is a great harm to society. When a life is terminated, and ended because of an abortion, it is basically making life seem to be something cheap and expendable. When you compile all of the possible reasons as to why a woman would get an abortion and take away the rape, incest, and maternal health cases, you are left with a lot of cases in which a woman is wanting to get an abortion specifically for personal convenience (Close). That’s basically like saying since abortion gives a woman a fundamental right to kill a child because it inconveniences her lifestyle, it should be legal for anyone to kill another human being just because they cramp our life style or get in the way of our daily habits and routine. That seems pretty logical if we go based on the logic set forth by this notion. Abortion provides for a disregard to the sanctity of life and takes away the value of life that we get to enjoy every day. No matter the reason as to why a woman feels like she should get an abortion, it should not be legal because there is life inside of her and it is not right for her to be able to decide to terminate that child’s life. 

Abortion is murder. That is one point of abortion that should not be argued at all. It has been scientifically proven that from the moment of conception, there is life inside of the woman’s womb and she should not be given the right to kill the child that is currently living inside of her. She would be murdering a child of God and that should not be allowed. Also, the unborn child inside of her is a human being and is therefore given all of the same rights that all humans share in the outside world. Among these rights is the inalienable right to life. If an abortion takes place and the child is killed, it is being robbed of its chance to live and that is a violation of its rights that are clearly stated and laid out in the Constitution. There are so many different angles to be considered when dealing with abortions, but only two sides to the argument. While I can sympathize with and understand what people on the pro-choice side of the argument are saying, it still should not be legal for a woman to choose to end another human being’s life. Abortion should be illegal because it is murder and a child is being robbed of its inalienable right to life.
