“Sports is the common denominator in the world that brings everyone together. If there's any one place in the world where there is equality, it is probably sports. We've come a long way in sports. Why can't society use sports as a way to bring people together and create change?” – Stephen M. Ross. Sports are always discussed by people from different countries, and different positions. Compared with other countries, the development of sports in the United States is leading the world. Americans’ love of sports is beyond our imagination. Every sport is a part of the culture and people worship and respect to this culture. This phenomenon is very common and obvious especially on campus. Students not only enjoy watching professional tournaments but also enjoy participating in them. We can easily find that there are many different sports teams in a college or high school. Students believe that becoming a member of the school team is a supreme glory. They proud of this because they will have the opportunity to fight honorably for their school. As we can see, team sports are a main form of entertainment in college and high school. Many students use their spare time to carry out sports, and some of them might form a team as well. Students who participate in team sports can benefit from several advantages from the process not only physically, but also in a mental and social aspect.

When people talk about the advantages of sports, the first thing that usually comes to mind is physical fitness which is the most direct benefit from playing sports. This could potentially be the original intention of the students that participating in sports. When students participate in sports, every movement - jumping, running, shooting or kicking a ball, promotes the activity of their muscles. Indulging in sports helps the body enhance heart and lung function, and improve the blood circulation system. Physical exercise can improve the regulatory function of the nervous system, improve the ability to judge the complex nervous system when human activities occur. So, the body can make timely coordinated, accurate and rapid response; Physical exercise can also help the body adapt to the change of internal and external environment while maintaining normal body life activities. According to OrganicFacts, the author states that “the health benefits of playing sports include proper weight management, efficient functioning of the heart, controlled diabetes, lower cholesterol levels, improved blood circulation, lower hypertension and stress levels” (16 Surprising Benefits of Playing Sports). According to the statistics, more than one-thirds of U.S. adults have obesity and this is a huge problem in the United States. So, weight management becomes more and more important and playing sports is one of the best ways to reduce the weight since it burns excess calories. When people are doing physical activities, the perspiration system will start to work and people begin to sweat. Fat gets burnt and calories are consumed through this process. People who are usually involved in sports can naturally have a proper weight. In addition to weight management, playing sports can also give the player a healthy heart. The heart benefits from physical exercise because it helps with stretching ability. Playing sports regularly will help to strengthen blood which can actually reduce the risk of disease. Due to poor eating habits, diabetes has a younger trend. The proportion of patients with diabetes continues to increase. Physical exercise can effectively control diabetes in a healthy way. So, playing sports is a good way to protect people’s body instead of taking medicine after an illness. Furthermore, playing sports can lower high blood pressure and prevent hypertension. It is really important to take care of hypertension because it may result in a stroke or heart disease (16 Surprising Benefits of Playing Sports). In other words, exercise is the most effective and the cheapest medicine for human body. All in all, as the most obvious ascendancy, physical benefits help students grow up healthily and study efficiently.

To further understand, team sports are not only beneficial to the human body, but also helps high school and college students develop personal strategies meantally. Playing in a high school or college sports team, students can cultivate their leadership skills. This is a very practical skill for students after they graduate from school and step into the society in the future. Lots of well-known international companies want to be able to recruit some young graduates who have excellent leadership skills and experiences. To be a team leader, students need to be very comprehensive. A captain should have good communication skills, coordination, execution, decision-making and control abilities. leader's responsibility is to inspire team morale, unite teammates and resolve contradictions within the team. At the crucial moment, the team leader needs to take responsibility and help the team win the victory. Expect for leadership skills, students also can learn about determination, personal responsibility and the way to face failure. According to Ted Talks by Sean Adams, “the player from different states, different country, different race, even have the different belief, is going to be a whole where can learn teamwork, community, fidelity and personal responsibility” (Ted Talks 2015). “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.” -Michael Jordan. As a part of the team, each player has the responsibility to help their teammates become better, strict compliance with discipline, loyal to the team and obey the coaching arrangements. The stadium is like a workplace, they both have strict system requirements that players and employees need to obey. Things that students need to in the sporting arena are similar to the things that workers have to do in a company. When students graduate from school and become an employee in the future, they are required to know how to cooperate with their partner and improve teamwork efficiency. For recruiters, the candidate needs an absolute loyalty to the company and employee should have the capability to help the company progress. Also, compliance with the company's rules and regulations is also an important criterion for evaluating an employee. It is noteworthy that these abilities can be trained when students playing team sports in high school and college. No one is born with these abilities. Instead, these capabilities will be implemented in practice. If an individual can earn these skills, then it will be the reason why they are different and better than their opponent.

On the other hand, students not only can learn through the game and from their teammates but also can gain a lot from their collegiate coaches. Collegiate coaches play a role like parents and teachers in a sports team who are trying to find the best resource to build a successful team and do their best to make the students succeed and become more mature rational. According to Heffernan, “Most children who play team sports will not win a college scholarship. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t learn something from collegiate coaches who spend countless hours evaluating high school athletes on and off the field. As it turns out, the advice head coaches have for prospective recruits will help any student succeed, even those who don’t plan to play sports in college” (Heffernan 2016). Not only that, Schinke states that “In general, the coaches’ share some common viewpoints across the three factors (consensus), and believe that the communication process should be aimed at stimulating both coaches and their athletes’ understanding about their performances. Attending behavior such as the ability to ask their athletes open questions and listen to what they are saying seems to be a necessity for coaches during performance appraisals” (Schinke 2014). Whether a team or an athlete can succeed or not, the coach is a very critical factor. Do more communication with the collegiate coaches is one of the greatest way to improve. Collegiate coaches teach students lots of useful skills such as goal set up, the role change, self-reflect, and emotion control. It is really important to set up a goal whether in academic learning or sports competition. A goal is a guide that drives students forward, making them work hard for their dream, and always concentrate on their mission. In life, people are playing different roles in different areas. For example, a company chairman might be a student when he/she is studying new things. So, a person can have many different identities in the society. Same as others, students who participate in team sports can have different identities. They might be the experts of one particular sport but as newcomers to another sport. Therefore, adjust the mentality and adapt to the role change is also very important. In order to make a great progress and enrich themselves, modesty is a compulsory course for every player. In the course of the game, self-reflection is also a very critical part. Compare to victory, self-reflection is always more valuable especially for those students who are growing up. According to Sean Adams, “Failure is not permanent. It is a part of life and it wasn’t terrible. Find the cause of failure will help students come back as a better player. It is more important to understand the interconnected relationship between preparation and success” (Ted Talks 2015). General speaking, there are lots of knowledge and skills that students can’t learn from the regular classroom but from the sports arena and that’s the reason why team spots are attractive and charming.

Lastly, appropriate exercise can help students relieve stress. Due to numerous homework and research projects, college students often feel great pressure and they need to find a way to release the pressure so that they can concentrate better on academic learning. The most popular way that college students will choose to reduce stress level is doing exercise and playing sports. People can let their body get relaxed while sweating. Athletes will forget other agony and troubles when they focus on the game and exercise so that the brain can gets rest.

In addition to personal strategies, playing team sports also help students enhance their social skills and abilities. In this society, knowing how to have good communication with others is very important. But knowing how to socialize is not something that professors will teach in class. Instead, students need to learn these social skills in practice through their daily lives. Social competence is an important criterion for success. If you are good at socializing, you will be more likely to gain a foothold in this society. As a student who doesn’t have a chance to work in the society, becoming an athlete in a sport team is an excellent way to learn some the social skills. Advisory states that being part of a team give students an access to a totally different social scene that would encourage them to interact more with others (Advisory 2013). Students who participate in team sports are asked to communicate and share their ideas or experience with their teammates. To be in a team, it is very important for every team members to understand each other. The cooperation between the players is based on mutual understanding. Only if players have more communication with their teammates, they can build a tacit understanding between each other. This is also the basis for winning a game. According to Manuel, students’ social abilities are being developed in a sports team while they learn about how to solves the problem, manage conflicts, and work together equally (Manuel 2015). As an athlete, students need to learn and face everything that happens on the field or off the field. When the athletes playing on the court, there are many unpredictable situations such as injury, conflict and failure possible. It is very necessary for the player to have a positive attitude and mindset so that they can face these problems. Moreover, the author also states that team sports help students build personal confidence and self-esteem which will help them make a closer relationship with their partner to ensure the quality of cooperation (Manuel 2015). These are all very practical skills that students need to learn from the process of the competition and training through a long time. Understanding how to solve problems, manage conflicts, deal with failure and build the confidence is as important as communication skill and both will be very useful when students step into the society in the future.

From another perspective, new members are an important part of building a team. Every student has the chance to become a new member. According to Benson, “Newcomer playing on a sports team and learning from other teammates, coaches, and the competitor is a process of organizational socialization”. The new athletes enter a sports team is just like the experience of a new employee who goes to work in a new company (Benson 463-473). As a newcomer, students need to take the initiative to understand our teammate and learn how to integrate into the new team. At the same time, the new member also needs to adapt to the new tactical system and the coach. It is a challenge for newcomers to make a better cooperation with their teammate in the shortest possible time and this will be a great study process for college and high school students. Communication is only one of the components of social competence. Team sport also helps students strengthen acceptance skills, understanding facility, and teamwork efficiency. These abilities will be trained through the competition and daily training. Overall, Teamwork has made a significant contribution to the advancement of social skills. Students participate in team sports can enhance their personal accomplishment.

In fact, some people do not agree with students too much involved in sports because they believe that students in college and high school should focus on learning academic knowledge instead of playing sports. Due to the different history and culture, people from different nations have different opinions and attitudes about sports development on campus. According to the survey taken by Amanda Ripley, “9 out of 10 said that some teenagers in the United States cared more about sports than their peers back home. They feel like doing well at sports was in the U.S. just as important as having good grades” (Ripley 2015). In other words, international students from other country feel amazed when they see that school wasn’t only about grades. Most of them agree that school is just for learning and sports activity should exist outside of school. Ripley also states that the fact that the local newspapers were using an entire section to report high school sports instead of stating anything about the trials and travails of the academic class was incredible (Ripley 2015). Actually, there are many some parents have the same opinion as Ripley. They ask their child to spend all the time in academic learning, focusing on school courses and homework assignment. In their mind, learning knowledge in class and doing homework at home is more important than participating in sports. They believe the fact that local newspapers were more likely to report sports events instead of academic education was a situation where the focus and integrity of education were shifted. Unlike their views, the author believes that physical exercise can actually benefits students’ academic performance because students can get higher mental faculties and cerebral performance when they participate more in sport activities. According to the article that published in British Broadcasting Corporation, “in order to found the link between exercise and exam success in English, math, and science, a study of 5,000 children found an increase in performance for every extra 17 minutes boys exercised and 12 minutes for girls. It also shows that children who carried out regular exercise, not only did better academically at 11 years old but also at 13 and in their exams at 16” (“Exercise boosts academic performance' of teenagers” 2013). Physical activity is not just an important factor in your health, but also help to improve academic performance. It is meant for parents, decision makers, and educator to encourage students to participate in physical activity.

In conclusion, team sports affect high school and college Student’s Life in many positive way. Students who participate in team sports are smarter, healthier and more mature than their peers because the skills and knowledge they learn and gain are those people who do not participate in team sports can’t learn from regular classroom. To be a successful person, playing team sports gives students a healthy body as a prerequisite. Furthermore, athletes can learn the social skills, leadership responsibility, corporation ability, emotion control, self-reflection and team spirit, through the competition and daily training. As interests, sport can be a way of entertainment and relaxation. In more sense, team sports will be a life course that students need to insist on for personal development. Students deserve it.
