Growing up in poverty I never took anything for granted. I was grateful for everything my parents gave me because the amount of effort and time it took them to get the little things in life that we needed to survive like food and clothes. Living in poverty was hard, but what made it even harder was hearing the things that went on during the night like people screaming and loud gunshots. I would hope and pray each night that my parents would come home safe from work since we lived in the worst part of Detroit where most of the crimes were happening. Growing up in Detroit really shaped my opinion on crime and poverty. I saw some corrupt people around me stealing from the homeless. It even got bad enough to where even the homeless were stealing from the homeless. I saw things that I can never unsee, and things I will never want to see again. Not only did this shape my opinion on poverty it also shaped my view on the correlation between crime and poverty and how it affects people living in impoverishment.

Poverty became a big issue and was discovered on a global scale after the Second World War (New Internationalist). To put this into perspective according to the UN Bureau Statistics the “Average income per head in the United States in 1947 was over $1400, and in another 14 countries ranged between $400 and $900” (New Internationalist). This shows that the even though the United States was struggling other countries were struggling even more because they were underdeveloped and were impoverished from the Second World War.
