Since it is a presidential election year there is constant chatter and controversy all over about the candidates. One candidate in particular that has sparked tons of popularity among the media as well as the American people themselves is popular businessman Donald J. Trump. The media highlights many of his prominent negative qualities but in reality when these seemingly negative qualities are more closely examined; they are actually positive and very useful qualities in a president. Since Trump and the election are both such popular topics currently there are lots of articles, blogs, videos and more that both agree with my viewpoint and disagree. One may think that including sources that are opposed to my viewpoint will hurt my argument but using other evidence that has been gathered it actually helps it.

When any American hears the name "Donald Trump" various qualities immediately pop into ones head. In many cases these description words are ones of the negative nature. For starters one thing that Trump is constantly accused of is having little to no filter; which is for pretty much the most part very true. In most settings in life such as lunch with your in laws parents, a business meeting, church, and much more this would not be acceptable at all. But that's just the thing, Trump isn't trying to impress anyone's parents, show off for clients, and be in good will with his minister. He is running for president of the United States of America. I'm sure people are thinking "well doesn't the president need to have a filter?" and yes in some settings it is optimal for the president to have a filter especially when it comes to offending people and making people like you. But sometimes the most likable person in the room isn't the one who will best at getting the job done. For years and years America has had very well spoken presidents who have wonderful filters and are the upmost polite. How do you think someone the presidents we have had got elected anyway? Think about those past presidents that seem like perfect polite people from their speeches and over all manor and then later on the country finds out things about them that are should I say much less than polite. Well there's a difference with Donald Trump; anything that is going though Trumps head, good or bad, is going to come out of his mouth. Yes, the bad can often times be rude and crude but at least it is straight forward and honest. Others have noticed this as well, billionaire Carl Icahn endorsed Trump for reasons along these lines. In an article written by Benjy Sarli, Icahn says "maybe he's brash, but he's willing to say what he believes and he's willing to say, 'hey this is complete bulls-." (Sarlin) The transparency of Trump is one that I'm not sure has ever been seen before in a presidential candidate.

Not only is Trumps lack of a filter being positive in the way that the American people know what he is really thinking with out it being sugar coated, it is also a positive when it comes to some aspects of foreign relations. When it comes to the actual relations with the individual leaders of foreign countries, who knows how the other leaders will react to Trumps attitude, but it will be useful to foreign relations when it comes to getting things done and our desires toward other counties and governments. Here is a hypothetical example; for years' countries like North Korea have threatened to bomb America. Instead of just relatively quietly ignoring the threat Trump would use his lack of filter as an intimidation factor and tell the North Koreans exactly how its going to be if they do that and most likely scare and intimidate them out of doing anything and stop making empty threats. It has been said by many that Trump knows nothing about diplomacy. This accusation is debatable but it can be retorted that he may not be an expert in diplomacy but what goes very much so hand in hand with him lacking a filter is that he is not scared to talk to other powerful world leaders. The fact of it is, he will talk to them and he will say exactly what he thinks needs to be done.

The reason behind why Trump will be able to sit down with other world leaders and effectively talk to them is because of another controversial quality he possesses, that he was and is a businessman. In general when it is said that someone is a businessman or businesswomen, it is not widely thought of to be something negative in the least. The reason that when many people talk about Trump being a businessman as a negative is that they believe that is all that he can do which makes him unqualified to be the president of the United States. In reality when thinking about that a little harder it is wonderful and a great quality in Trump that he is a businessman for more reason than one. One of them being that it is a contributing reason as to why he would do well with other world leaders, from his business background he has ample experience with negations and compromises. Given all of the current turmoil all over the world negotiation and compromising skills are some that will be very important of our next president to possess.

Other than having these skills from being a businessman, Trump being one is also a positive quality in the aspect of our economy. It is no bug secret that the American economy is almost constantly in trouble and in debt. With in this quality people try to discredit it by bringing up the fact that Trump has gone bankrupt multiple times. This is true, he has gone bankrupt a few times. That's the thing though, every time that he has, he has always come back from it. This is kind of like America's economy, the economy has crashed and come back from it. The difference is that the United States is still in debt, Trump is out of his. In a presidential debate aired on CNN in October Trump is quoted saying in response to questions about his past bankruptcy, "I came out great, but I guess I'm supposed to come out great. That's what I'm supposed to do for the country. We owe $19 trillion. Boy, am I good at solving debt problems. Nobody can solve it like me" (Emily Stewart). It would be useful to have a president who has personal experience with how to handle and get out of money crisis' and feels confident that he can handle it. In an article written on "The Street" it states that "according to a Zogby Analytics poll, voters believe he would be better prepared to handle the economy, taxes, and create jobs than likely Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton" (Emily Stewart).

A quality of Trump other than being a businessman that can be viewed as positive, but seemingly to most, negative, is the fact that he is famous. When I say negative quality in this instance I don't mean a negative quality as to being president but a negative reason as to Trumps overwhelming popularity. It is thought by some that since Trump has had his time in Hollywood so he gets the most media attention and this is the reason for his high numbers in preliminary polls. To explain this better on the website "Five Thirty-Eight" in an article with theories about Trumps rise it says, "it's not that remarkable for a candidate to poll at 35 percent when he's recently been getting 70 percent of the media coverage of the Republican race" (Nate Silver). This can be spun a completely other way tough; weather it is due to Trumps prior fame that he goes so much media attention or not, the fact of it is that most of the media attention that he gets is typically showing Trump in a negative light. One would assume that if he is getting all this media attention for less than great things that it would encourage people to dislike him and make his numbers go down, yet this is not the case. If anything his fame somewhat hurts him sometimes. There are countless media spoofs on Trump. His fame and mannerisms make him an easy target to be constantly mocked.

A great example, well one of many, of Trump being mocked by the media is an episode of the comedy nightly news type show called "Last Week Tonight" hosted by John Oliver. In this video The host is John Oliver. The point of this episode it to make fun of Trump and to debunk the reasons of pro Trump voters for voting for him in a satirical way. It starts out by Oliver interviewing random people of the street their views on Trump and why they like him and why they think that he would make a good president. People said things like he will get the job done, he will make American Great Again (his slogan), and since he is a successful businessman he will help the American economy become more successful and other things along these lines. Then the episode goes to Donald Trump pretty much regurgitating those same things about himself as to why that he would make a good president. The way the clips of Trump were presented of him saying these things make him sound pretty much like a stupid idiot. After each clip was shown the host, Oliver, would in comedian fashion make fun of Trump further and show how the people and Trumps reasons for being president are basically irrelevant and invalid.

From this description of my observations and summary of the video episode it may seem as if it wont help my paper since the topic of mine is why the seemingly negative qualities of Trump would actually make him a great president. This is actually precisely why observing and analyzing this video will help my paper. It shows not only the opposite view point of mine but it also shows the negative things people think of him as well while helping my show how some of the media outlets portray Trump. Observing and gathering information from a opposite view point allows me to parallel it to my view point as to how they are actually positive qualities in the position of president of the united states. This episode also shows how so many of Trumps qualities can be spun any which way for a specific view point that is attempting to be portrayed.

In this video one of the things Trump was chastised for was for the name "Trump" basically just being a brand. Oliver talked about how it is just the name Trump that makes things sell and makes him should good. Although it may be true that he is a brand in his own name this isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the book by Jamie McIntyre, "What Lessons We Can Learn From Donald Trump", he mentions that this is one of the reasons everything he does turns out to be successful. McIntyre couldn't have said it better, "one of Donald Trump's major success factors is himself, his brand and his self-promotion. His sheer force of personality, swagger, charisma, presence, a huge ego, funny hairstyle, and high level negotiating skills, coupled with real estate developments that have a point-of-difference, are major factors in his success" (McIntyre). All of the qualities mentioned can be turned into negative ones depending all on how they are worded and portrayed. That is precisely what the media does to Trump.

Other than big media headlines on the non positive things about Trump, individuals are voicing similar issues about him too. When looking on political debate websites the views that individuals post is very telling as well. On "debate.com" a user named "republicanman" posted the question, "Would Donald Trump make a good US president?" Fifty-six percent said yes and forty four percent said no to this question. Many not only answered the question but also left detailed explanations. One issue with Trump that one of the users posted is a common one among non Trump supporters. This issue they say is that he has no clue how to run a country. In retort to this, does anyone know how to run a country? Each president the United states has ever had has more experience in some areas than others. Like many past presidents Trump does not have military experience which is naturally a big part of being commander and chief. Though he lacks in this he has so many other wonderful qualities of a leader that pretty much make up for this lack. His leadership qualities will allow him to have the comradery that our nation and military need and will help him mark smart decisions when putting people in charge for other military positions. In a republican presidential debate that took place in Greenville South Carolina, when asked a question about if he was president and it's the first day in the situation room what 3 questions would he ask his national security experts Trump immediately had a great answer, "what we want to do, when we want to do it, and how hard do we want to hit" (Trump at debate). He may not know exactly how to do it but he does know exactly what needs to be done.

The examples out there of the qualities in Trump that would contribute to making him a great next United States President is so much more than just the previous ones. Weather it's a media head line about Trump or any presidential candidate for that matter, do a little research on it and just because on the surface it may seem like something bad it may be something that this country is in desperate need of. Just like the qualities of Donald Trump.
