Being a computer scientist major at the University of South Carolina, I wanted to do more research on the subject. I wanted to go into the field of viewing the computer world differently than I previously have. The issue over privacy is a wide spread problem in our modern world. My research question is: What type privacy concerns arise with the development of computers? The research question does not affect my values or views on the subject because the study of computer science brings much more improvement to many daily activities than fear or even the idea of privacy evasion. My personal experience on the subject is limited; however, I am aware of minor threats, such as ID fraud or computer viruses that the computer revolution comes with. I do not find any immediate issue with the current situation but I do find myself, rarely, considering the idea of either the government or a third party taking advantage of the flaws in the computer system, for one example. With all of the benefits computers have, the dangers of them are often overlooked, which could cause terrible events from privacy invasion to wars. I am qualified to write about this subject because of my knowledge and previous experience on the idea. Also, I have done research and kept up with daily news on any potential problem that may arise in the field.

My first source, Controversies in Computer Science written by Rachel Sturges, goes into the some wide spread generalizations with computer dangers. The article goes over the problems with privacy issues such as government control, and artificial intelligence. The writing targets anyone with access to a computer and how the evolution could harm them. The writer targets the values of people such as their finances, with credit card fraud, and national safety from possible cyber-terrorists. The idea challenges the people that work against the "cyber terrorist" that the public faces. Cyber security experts participate in this issue every day and some of the research found would question some of the researcher's studies. The creditability of the author is subpar. However, the author is a well-educated teacher that works at a prestigious university. The writer has a slight bias towards the destructive side of the computers. The author emphasizes on this side rather than focusing on the overall picture.

My second source is an article on how to protect your privacy by Microsoft. The page states the steps that anyone can take to secure their personal computer. The source shows how relaxed and easy it can be to prevent potential threats. Major evidence is slightly lacking in the article; however, it does show how simple and easy it is to make any personal computer safe and secure by making sure antivirus in updated, correct email use, and password strategies. The major values that the writing shows is the security of the common people. Microsoft, the author of my source, wants people who use their product to be secure whenever they are using a computer. The credibility of the author, Microsoft, is extremely high because of their previous record as a company of computer experts and technicians. I would often not trust many people with my computer or laptop, however, if Microsoft was going to work on my PC, I would trust them completely because of previous high ratings and good customer service. Microsoft only wants to give the common people their tools to be able to protect their computers. The writing is almost like a set of instructions which makes bias hard to slide into the writing.

The main issue in today's technical and computer world is whether the government should have the right to collect and store some or all of the personal information that is displayed out over the internet. My last source, A Cyber Age Privacy Doctrine, goes into the very real threats that many of the population could face. The writing has many values such as personal privacy and government control. The writer values his own computer and he wants people to realize the possible threats, even by using certain court cases of participants that contributed to that undesirable side of the computer revolution. The author is a very creditable source. He has written 24 books on some of the historically bad crises that arose in the past such as the Cuban missile crisis or the nuclear arms race. The article has a slight bias towards the harmful side. The writer of this piece likes to explore the big issues that face the world and what could be done to neutralize those situations.

My research question is arguable because the computer revolution brings many parts, even some bad, so it is arguable for anyone to take a side on whether it has brought more progress or damage. Many of my sources pointed out the big negative aspects that computers bring such as privacy evasion, government control, and even some Terminator type discussions. I understand where the other sources are coming from, however the different views do not affect my own view. My research question does not need to be revised.
