Earlier this year, House Republicans voted to stop funding planned parenthood. They want to completely cut off the federal financing for the organization because they believe that Planned Parenthood is making profits off of selling aborted babies for medical research. The Republicans believe that the the organization is morally corrupt. I am interested in this research question because Planned Parenthood does so much for women and men around the nation, much more than just abortions. Three percent of all services of the organization are abortion services, clearly showing that the organization has much more to offer than just carrying out the procedure. This topic is important to me personally because not only do I think that everyone deserves to have the freedom of making their own choices regarding abortion, I also believe that the organization helps people in ways that some doctors and other organizations cannot by offering treatments of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy testing, cancer screening, and prenatal services. When I am older and want to start a family I want to have the option of seeking help through this organization or an organization similar to this with profitable health care.

My first source is an article from Women's Issues titled "What does Planned Parenthood do?" which was about the specific services that the organization provides. According to the article, 3% of the organizations services are abortion services, 38% are testing and treatment for STD's, 33.5% are for contraception, 14.5% are cancer screening and prevention, and 10.4% are other women's health services. The author is showing the reader's that some Republican political leaders were giving false information about Planned Parenthood being only used for abortion, when obviously that is not true. The author is biased because she is supportive of Planned Parenthood and thought it was very wrong that political leaders were giving out false information.

My second source was an article from the NY Times titled "House Republicans Vote to Stop Funding Planned Parenthood" which was a news article about the government wanting to block all funding for the organization because they were accusing them of getting profits from selling body parts of aborted fetuses. The article gives quotes from Representatives and other political leaders arguing about the issue. My political views are very independent, I agree with some Democratic views and some Republican views, but in this situation I agree with the Democratic leaders. Personally, I think that these government officials had a very wrong image of Planned Parenthood as an organization as a whole. They are focused so much on the abortion aspect that they are forgetting about all the other services the organization has to offer for the public, considering their name is 'Planned Parenthood' it is obvious that they have a lot of resources for actually raising children. This is credible because it is a news article with direct quotes from government officials. It does not contain much bias because it is just telling the audience about the Republicans views and the votes to stop funding but the author is just reporting it, not saying his opinion about the issue. However, the New York Times is known for having a Democratic standpoint on most issues which could cause a lot of bias in news articles.

My final source was an article from US News about the ongoing attempts of Republicans to stop funding Planned Parenthood once and for all. They believe that the organization is morally wrong and is just a simple way to carry out an abortion. There has been no evidence of anything illegal that the organization is doing, however, the Republicans are making it seem that way while protesting this issue. They argue that funding the organization is a moral issue and that the three hundred and fifty thousand dollars of annual funding to Planned Parenthood needs to be stopped as soon as possible. There is little bias in this article because it is a news report, reporting the opinions of the Republicans, not the author himself.

The research question, "Why should the government continue funding Planned Parenthood?" is arguable because there are so many different opinions regarding abortion and the Republicans seem to blame the organization for the procedure being available, when in reality only 3% of all Planned Parenthood services are dedication to abortion, offering so many more resources to help families with affordable health care so they can raise a healthy child. I need to find more articles about the Democratic standpoint of the issue and why they believe that the funding should be continued so there will be more of a political side to my argument. I would like to make my research question a little less focused on just the aspect of abortion and more into the organization itself.
