Having the mindset of wanting to lose weight and become fit is a very popular tendency in today's society. There are many different advertisements for the hundreds of diet pills and supplements one should take in order to achieve their physical goal. The majority of people do not realize or do not do enough research to know the harmful side effects of diet pills before consuming them. By proving the argument that losing weight by exercising provides benefits that outweigh the effects caused by taking diet pills, brings awareness to people's health and over all well being.

The research question of whether exercising to lose weight is better for ones health and body than taking diet pills and supplements, grabs my attention because exercise and fitness have impacted my life. Exercise and diet pills are advertised for being both a safe and an efficient way to lose weight when in reality diet pills are very harmful to ones body and health. Another reason I chose the argument that exercise is a better method for losing weight than diet pills is because the majority of people are not aware of the dangerous side effects of taking supplements and diet pills. This research question supports my values because the research proves my argument of how beneficial exercise is for ones body. Living in today's society with social media and magazines showing off amazing bodies on the front covers, makes the urge to be fit and skinny an ultimate high. Diet pills are advertised to be an easier method to loss weight, while in the long run the old fashion 'exercise and eating right' strategy is better off for ones health. My first hand experiences, participation in sports and interest in health and fitness, qualify me to write about this topic. Growing up and personally experiencing the impact of great health and exercise made me passionate about health and fitness, which pushed me towards this research question.

In effort to find reliable, feasible and useful sources to support my research question I searched databases and on the Internet. I found an article and two scholarly journals. The article "Harmful Effects of Diet Pills and Supplements" is found online on a rehabilitation program website. This article does not have an author but is on an official website for a rehabilitation program at Futures of Palm Beach. The team behind the website and research consists of Medical Professionals and Ph.D- level Mental Health Treatment. This is important because it means the information is reliable. The main claim of this article is proving the harmful effects of diet pills and supplements. This is proven through explanation of why weight loss pills are dangerous, abused, and how one is not provided with enough information about the ingredients that the diet pill may contain. Many diet pills have been recalled or banned because of the awful side effects such as kidney problems, liver damage and agitation. One of the scholarly journals was out of Harvard Health Letter, focused on how one does not need to be dependent on pills to fix their problems. This article explains how a healthy lifestyle and exercise can help prevent diseases, other medical concerns as well as help one loss weight. The article elaborates on arthritis, cholesterol, depression and diabetes as well as other medical issues and how exercise benefits and improves each of these categories. It also furthers my argument of explaining how diet pills and supplements have negative side effects while a healthy diet and exercise do the opposite for ones body. The author of this article is Christine Junge, who works for Harvard Health Publications. Due to Harvard's prestigious rankings and reputation this author and source is reliable. This article is argumentative because the author is arguing that exercise and diet are more effective than taking pills. The author's arguments and claims are supported with diagrams, charts, and facts. The other scholarly journal that was found on the Advanced Academic Search is focused on "The Role of Exercise In Weight Loss." This article's main claim is to show the role that exercise plays in weight loss. It explains the role of energy in exercising, how much energy it takes out of a person, and the benefits that exercising provides. To help support the arguments made in this article there are tables showing results from people exercising. There are two authors, Dr. Glen G. Blix who is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion at Lorna Lina University and Dr. Arlene G. Blix who is a professor in the Department of Nursing at California State University. These authors are very credible because of their background of the information and credentials. This is an informative piece of text that has strong support for its claims as well as examples that further the proof. This article is filled with great information and facts about exercise and its benefits because of the support proven.

Arguments can be looked at from many different perspectives causing different disputes about the same research question. I am approaching it through the lens of the benefits of exercise. This research question is arguable because despite the research and health articles one can argue that diet pills can cause faster results in weight loss. That may be true in some case but that does not ignore all of the harmful side effects. Exercise has many benefits for ones health and body than just losing weight. The different perspectives of the sources do not affect my own perspective because in my reasoning I am strongly and fully backing up the argument of exercise by proving the benefits through credible research and articles. I might need to revise my research question by narrowing in and expanding on three of the main benefits of exercising that diet pills do not offer. This could further my argument in the research paper by specifically pointing out the differences instead of being a broad argument. This is an important topic to research because it can affect many people's lifestyles and diets. The benefits that exercise provides to ones body and health should be shared with society.
