The journey to the United States as an immigrant or refugee is a perilous one, but thousands of men, women, and children have attempted to cross the border because they are no longer safe in their own homes. The article "Seeking Refuge: Life and Death at the Border" highlighted La Posada Providencia, an emergency shelter for homeless migrants located in San Benito, Texas. La Posada depicts the inflation of immigration to the United States, and provides an example to why the government must figure out a solution sooner than later. Ananda Rose, the author, uses pathos, ethos, and logos to build her argument and deliver her message. While she uses all three appeals, her extensive focus on pathos effectively connected her writing to the reader's emotions in order to accurately portray the importance of finding a solution to the current immigration crisis. The use of pathos to deliver her message is successful because the reasons why migrants are forced to leave their homes and the details about the lives they are currently forced to live are more powerful than statistics and facts regarding immigration.

Throughout the article, Rose integrates an emotion provoking writing style to influence her readers. One moving statement reads that the people seeking refuge are "survivors of human atrocities of nearly every kind--religious and political persecution, ethnic cleansing, human trafficking and slavery, extortion, kidnapping, mass murders, terrorism, forced conscription, rape, and other gender-based violence" (Rose). In America we typically only hear of these atrocities and very rarely experience them. The concept that people in the 21st century are subject to these heinous crimes motivates the audience to act and to help the cause. Rose also writes about how the majority of the people at the border, whether they manage to cross or not, are women and children. In many cases, unaccompanied minors travel thousands of miles towards the border "where criminals prey on vulnerable migrants, many of whom are extorted, murdered, kidnapped, trafficked, and sexually assaulted," (Rose) because they are safer traveling through this than in their own homes. By explaining that mothers and fathers, who love their children just as much as parents in the United States do, are forced to send their children away to save them strikes an emotional chord with readers. Horrendous crimes are appalling, but the concept of horrendous crimes inflicted upon children is extremely powerful in motivating people to try to make a difference.

Across the world, faith is a major factor in the way people think, act, and feel. Rose utilizes pathos while involving faith with quotes from Governor Deval Patrick's speech where he, holding back tears, said "every major faith tradition on the planet charges its followers to treat others as we ourselves wish to be treated. I don't know what good there is in faith if we can't and won't turn to it in times of need" (Rose). He has been a major proponent for the opening of shelters and facilities to house large numbers of migrant children, while preaching that his faith is the reason he is so passionate about fighting for these children. By using faith, the article connects with people of almost every religion. Religions often preach themes such as love thy neighbor, treat others the way you want to be treated, and to help others whenever you can. Religious people typically feel inclined to follow the ideals of their faith closely, as it is a guideline or rulebook for how to live their life to the fullest.

While she focuses on pathos, Rose understands the importance of logos in her article. The statistic that over twenty-five nations have been housed by La Posada proves to the reader how many people are passing through and how immigration to America is a world wide subject. She states a few more facts, including "Customs and Border Protection reports about seventy thousand unaccompanied minors were apprehended in 2014" and that in 2014, La Posada "received 1,411 clients, including 631 children under the age of 18, and 555 women" (Rose). Statistics put a number to the picture an author has drawn for the audience; in Rose's case the picture was drawn from her use of pathos. She also uses the logical fallacy ad hominem when describing Governor Rick Perry's views on immigration. He believes Obama is lazy which caused his administration to slack on immigration policies and basically ignore it. In reality, the Obama administration has deported more immigrants than any other president.

In any piece, the author's ethos is important as it allows the reader to believe and trust the information provided. While she doesn't focus on her credibility, Rose's ethos is implied. She holds a doctorate from Harvard University and is a published author, as she has extensive knowledge regarding immigration policies and crisis's not only in the United States, but across the world. Her visits to La Posada Providencia and Homeland Securities Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility to see first hand the issues surrounding migration from Central America allowed her to accurately describe the current situation. She was able to use her experiences and implied credibility to successfully apply pathos throughout the article.

The article "Seeking Refuge: Life and Death at the Border" brought attention to the growing immigration crisis at the border of the United States. Ananda Rose provided information about La Posada Providencia, a home for migrants in Texas that is providing shelter for the growing number of migrants seeking refuge in the United States. Rose's focus on pathos resulted in the effectiveness of her ability to connect her writing to the reader's emotions. By providing the reasons why migrants are forced to leave their homes, the details about the lives they are currently forced to live, and why we need to help motivates her audience to help the cause. It is time for our country to begin viewing the situation on our border as a humanitarian crisis, rather than just illegal immigration. We must act upon our emotions and do what we would want others to do for us if needed; help those in need and provide a safe solution to the dangerous lives they have been forced to live.
