My research exigence is that individuals are becoming too dependent on technology and social media and that we need to find the right balance. I tend to be on my cell phone for a good amount of hours during a day. I'm either texting my friends, checking Instagram, VSCO, snapchat, twitter, and anything else that can take away my 'boredom'. Lately, I've realized how anti-social social media can actually make us. When you are walking to class, sitting at a restaurant or cafeteria a good majority of people are on their phones, even when their friends are sitting right across from them. In my personal experience I have been one of those individuals and it makes me sad to think about. Technology users are developing health problems as well as social problems all because of overusing technology. This topic interests me a lot because I am curious to how much people change socially, mentally and even physically just from technology and social media. I'm also interested in this topic to see how my younger siblings and other people will grow up differently because of their introduction to technology so much earlier than I was. My parents always talk about how I'm on my phone too much, and to have no phones at the table because they are a huge distraction. Just from my parents generation to mine, technology has drastically improved. Technology users could disagree and say that technology is beneficial in many ways with connecting them to old friends as well as advancement in research. This is true but over using technology is bad, which is why we need to find a balance. This research exigence will help me, as well as others(my readers), not be so dependent on technology and to focus on their well being by balancing their usage of technology. I'm qualified to write about this because I first hand use technology and social media daily. Also, I will be looking up a lot of case studies and articles on technology, the way people are effected and what type of balance we should use with technology.

Three sources I found best were a case study done on high school students, and two articles written about the effects of technology. The case study was done to determine how technological distractions affected the student's study habits. The conductor gave the students a test to take and allowed them to have their phones out next to them during the exam. It came to conclusion that the students could only concentrate for an average of three minutes before checking their phone. They check it even when there wasn't a notification to remind them to. This shows how technology and cell phones have become so involved with student's everyday lives they can't even go a few minutes without them. The man who conducted this study was a professor at California State University, making him qualified. His bias towards the topic was that students are too attached to their technology and valued the idea that we need to balance our time on technology.

The first article was more focused on children and the effects of technology on them. It claims that children will feel and think differently because of technology. For example, the article gives evidence of how children may be good at finding information on the internet and looking things up, but may not be good at remembering it or using their own imagination. Also, how technology puts privacy and safety at risk. It shows how children are growing up differently from the use of technology when introduced to it early. The author researches and writes for education and technology websites and books. She is definitely biased towards technology being used too much in our lives. She made a point to make sure she isn't insisting to cut out all technology, but to cut some of it out and find a balance.

The next article was more about social media and the negative effect it portrays on society and individuals. Social media can give people a false sense of connection because you can't determine a real relationship over words on electronics. People could believe you are someone completely different than who you actually are because of the lies one can create on a profile. Social media can also lead to cyber bullying and less productivity. "43% of people have said they've been online bullied before". The author of this article is is biased towards social media hurting our society. He has has been researching and professionally writing since 1991, making him credible to be writing about this topic.

My research exigence is arguable because technology/social media is more of a newer concept over the years. People love social media and technology because you can get answers to anything in the world if just a few clicks. Scientists use it to research and develop new ideas to use in our studies. We can connect with people we haven't talked to in years, meet new people who have the same interests, see what all our friends are up to, as well as look at all the latest styles. But from using technology for all these ideas, many people are way too dependent on it and need to find a balance. Younger individuals are too into social media and it could lead to depression when they see someone who looks like they're having a lot more fun then they are. In order or address my issue of technology and social media in 2,500 words I will talk about specific problems people develop from overusing technology and how to find a perfect balance.
