Feminism has been a topic of discussion since before the 1800's yet most people still are not aware of the definition. It's amazing that the word has become so inverted into conversations and political platforms yet not many people know what it means. The dictionary definition of feminism is: "the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men (Webster Dictionary)." It is not the notion that women are superior to men in any way, not that women hate men or women can no longer be feminine. It means that if you are a feminist you believe that people are equal to one another regardless of their gender. This issue affects me because I am woman, and I see things firsthand that belittle women every day. When I was younger I was oblivious to the magnitude of the problem we as women face. I think that is a major problem to this issue, that people feel like it's not a big problem because they have become so desensitized to the gender divide in every aspect of our lives.

In the article "Gender Equality in the US Today" by Ferro, she shows the inequality in the work place. She explains that today on average women are being paid only 77 cents to the man's dollar for the same exact work as their male counterpart (Ferro). Women who over qualify a man going up for the same job get declined because employers fear women will abandon their job for their maternal duties. Women on average test higher intellectually in school and in academic performance, they have a higher rate of attending and completing higher education and obtaining a Master degree(Ferro). Yet, there is still an inferiority complex held against them today. Ferro is a published author who dedicated most of her work to equal justice. She graduated from University of Pennsylvania and attended Law School of New York University with a BA in gender, culture and society so she is well educated on the variety of ways that women are unfairly mistreated. The value most heavily used is justice. Ferro shows that even for the same work women are not being paid the same is not right or just.

All aspects of our lives are guilty of gender inequality and our government is no exception. A democracy is supposed to be a government representative of the people. In congress ethnically almost every race is closely proportional to that of the population recoded in our census. "Conversely, women make up less than 20% of congress and over 50% of the US population (Simone)." That is not proper representation of the population and the ratio is grossly disproportionate. Simone is a published author writing for the national memo. The proof she uses in her article are facts from things easily accessible like how many people are on the Supreme Court making her credible and non bias. The value she uses the most is fairness. She shows how women are currently unfairly represented in politics.

Inequality is not just in politics and the work place, it has plagued everything. The next article I read was about how on the red carpet and Hollywood interviewers are guilty of this as well. Amy Pohler has launched campaign #Askhermore. It is about how when on the red carpet women get asked shallow questions. Ghoussoub says, "But we continue to see women reduced to what they are wearing, or asked humiliating questions about their diet regimes." This campaign is geared to motivate the media to know women past their appearance. Ghoussoub is a woman who has been growing watching this play out. She is also a graduate of UNC and USA Today correspondent. Her article could be biased because the fact that she is a girl however that also allows her an insight into what it is like to be a woman. The value of this article and the campaign is meaningful work. It strives to show the value in the work that they women do.

Feminism needs to be revered not feared. It is not a game that needs to be won, no one gender is inherently better than the other. There need not be allowances for one gender and not the other but equality amongst all. Some of us are boys and some are girls but we are all human. This is not a battle of the sexes this is a battle for equality. No matter what article I have read there seems to be basis, but I feel that's apparent in many articles due to the allowance of subjectivity in this topic. However, there seems to be consistency in all the facts that are presented. The biggest disagreement I've found is that is people feel that this is no longer an issue and that feminism is no longer necessary. However Equal right is always necessary and relevant.
