This research question has been relevant the past few decades because of the increase in technology that has evolved. A decline in children spending adequate time exercising outdoors has resulted from the expansion of technology. Many elementary schools are cutting back on recess causing children to spend less time outside, and exercise less than usual. In the past ten years' teachers have stressed education, resulting in teaching their students for nearly seven hours with only a short lunch break in between lessons. It is important for these children to receive an adequate recess break because it allows for their brains to rest and it teaches them life lessons that they would not learn in the classroom. Children who do not receive a fair break are rather lethargic by the end of the day and have a hard time staying focused (Millner). It is important for children to spend time outdoors because it makes them stronger and helps with the prevention of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol levels ("Kids"). I have been involved in sports, such as dance, soccer, and volleyball, from a young age. As a result, I felt like a healthier person. When I do not exercise regularly, I notice that I have less energy than usual. I am qualified to write about this because it is something that I am passionate about. I like to exercise and hike, not only because it helps make me healthier, but also because it alleviates stress.

Scientists have proven that it is important to spend time outdoors specifically doing physical exercise. In this article written for the Running and FitNews magazine, scientist prove why exercise is important, especially outdoor exercise. A disorder often occurs during the colder months called seasonal affective disorder, which happens when people choose not to spend time outdoors because of the daunting colder temperatures. Another scientific reason why it is important to go outdoors daily is to receive a sufficient amount of vitamin D, which comes from the sun. Receiving satisfactory amounts of vitamin D can help to prevent serious health disorders. The article focuses on informing the reader about the importance of exercising outside year round even in uncomfortable temperatures. Physical activity has become a growing problem among children because of the amount of electronics available ("This"). This article is written by the American Running Association for their magazine Running and FitNews. It is a credible article because it was found on one of the databases through the Thomas Cooper Library. The writers of the article are biased because they work for an organization that promotes health through exercise. While they are biased, all of the information provided in the article is factual and informative.

Denene Millner, an outraged mother writes, Why Kids Really Need Recess, because she sees the effects on her daughter from lacking recess daily. By not having recess the girl is negatively affected making her more tired and irritable. Recess is important for young children because it teaches them behavior lessons that they would not learn inside of the classroom. Children learn lessons about communication and recovery when playing on the playground. The author feels that while education is important, exercise is just as important for young, growing children. Without recess children behave lackadaisically and have a harder time comprehending their school work. It has been proven that children who receive recess daily at school behave better: they learn life lessons and rest their brains during these breaks (Millner). The author of the article, from the Parenting School Years magazine, is Denene Millner. This article is a credible source because it is from an award winning magazine that can be found from one of the library databases. The source is biased because the author sees the negative effects of the absence of outdoor activity right in front of her eyes. But while being biased she does use credible information to explain her reasoning behind her argument.

The third article mainly focuses on the benefits of children exercising regularly. It goes into depth of three benefits of exercising, which include endurance, strength, and flexibility. Because of the increase in technological gadgets being produced, children are spending more time indoors than ever before. Along with poor food consumption, technology is another prominent reason as to why childhood obesity is a problem in America. This article focuses on the benefits of physical activity in children. When children play on the playground, the three benefits of exercise are incorporated. These three benefits are endurance, strength, and flexiblity ("Kids"). Recently, childhood obesity has become a serious problem in America, partly due to the amount of time children spend inactive engaging with electronics. The article explains how many hours a day parents should have their children exercising in order to stay healthy and active. This article is a credible source because it is written for the KidsHealth organization by an expert in exercise for children. The source is biased toward the importance of exercise because this organization promotes health and exercise as a key component in children staying healthy.

This research question can be arguable because very hot or very temperatures can be harmful to children's health. Playing outside in weather that is above 100 degrees Fahrenheit can cause children to get exhausted and possibly faint if they do not drink the appropriate amount of water. While some parents do not deny their children time outdoors, they do think that it is important for their children to be well-versed in technological abilities. Technology has grown significantly in the past decade and will continue to grow. With this growth, numerous parents have started encouraging their children to use technology as often as possible in order to fully understand it. Another disagreement that people have with this argument is that parents disagree that recess is an important part of their child's day because they believe that their children are at school to learn and would like them to be doing that for as long as possible. While it is important to spend time learning, it has been proven that children who have recess retain the information they learn in class better. Thus making them more balanced individuals physically and mentally. The research question could be revised by changing it to pertain more toward children spending too much time on electronics or whether recess is an important part of a child's day.
