Homelessness is an issue throughout the world we live in that leaves many broken people in poverty and without any hope. Fortunately for me, I was given a roof over my head, food to eat, and a strong family bond yet so many individuals aren't always afforded the same graces. This research question focuses on the change that can be made to support the individuals whom have been put in positions where they aren't given the opportunities to thrive in life. With so much control in a government there is always room to create and better the policies currently in place. I have met people who had everything stripped of them and were forced to turn to a life on the streets, begging others for money in order to eat a meal. I morally view homelessness as travesty that needs to be ended in order to create a safer and healthier world. Having a personal opinion about this topic affects the way I search for evidence to support my claim yet it helps to bring attention to the many arguments dealing with governmental involvement in homeless policies. My personal knowledge and experience with homeless individuals and their situation makes me qualified to write about this topic because I can create a connection between personal experience and research.

"Keep Your Sunny Side: A Street-Level Look at Homelessness" provided an opinion based context which had descriptions of personal experiences of living on the streets. The source points out the feelings of degradation, emptiness, and isolation that come from a life on the streets as everyone looks down on them. The author sent the message that homeless individuals have been deprived of many necessities and humiliated by others. It clears the stigma that homeless people are "fine" and are able to get jobs easily. While the article may be an opinion piece it has some credibility as it was an eyewitness account of a life on the streets. The bias was siding with individuals suffering from homelessness and the lack of perspective from people viewing it from the outside. The author speaks on the fact that his only credibility is his personal experience however he supports his claims with statistical evidence along with other personal accounts.

A study done by several researchers in Canada reveals that several individual and structural risk factors led to a path of homelessness. The individual risk factors included substance abuse, mental illness, and relationship conflicts while the structural risk factors entailed transitions from foster care and total institutions. With these types of risks it makes it nearly impossible for an individual to recover to an average life with a home and employment. The goal of this study was to identify the pathways to homelessness and identify ways in which local and national policies could help to change the outcome of these homeless individuals' lives. The authors remain a credible source as they identify the issues at hand by doing a study on several different areas in Canada while asking the same questions for all candidates in order to get a broad spectrum of answers. The source of bias would be the goal to enact policy changes when dealing with homelessness.

The study done on exit strategies for the homeless expressed the cycle in which goals are set in order for a homeless individual to succeed in escaping. The main claim from the source was that homeless individuals that have been for several years often set short term goals that dealt with their necessities to survive on the streets. The individuals who were fortunate enough to exit homelessness set long term goals and made sure to address each goal. Many of the interviews created awareness on the necessity for strategizing skills as they helped to set up a positive life. The interests that the study addresses is to provide strategy and goal resources that help individuals stuck in homelessness to reevaluate their priorities. The authors were biased in that they were finding results in order to benefit the homeless population rather than change governmental policies. This academic journal has credibility in the organization of the study and the data presented from the interviews in order to better support their claim.

The research question I posed is arguable because it is dependent on the place in the world and the governmental situation that is currently in place. Each government has different means of solving such a large and public problem like homelessness while other countries don't have the means to make such dramatic social policies dealing with this prevalent issue. Throughout the sources there were many agreements and disagreements however there were several reoccurring themes throughout all three of them. One agreement that was common between all of them was the relevance of the issue and the ways in which people come to a life of homelessness. A disagreement that was present was how the government should handle an issue like homelessness and it was dependent on what region of the world the source was referring to and taking data from. The different perspectives between the sources, whether an opinion piece or study done, gave me a sense of what specific reasons cause homelessness and the effects once one is defined as homeless. In the future I would revise my research question to focus on a specific region of the world or compare two regions in order to create a comparison. The research question could be phrased to deal with only the opinions of the people rather than from a governmental standpoint as well.
