The difference between the ways these two separate cultures have been treated is solely based on the fact of terrorism. Italians were not known for terrorism and brought a lot of different ethnic traditions to the United States, but with the recent news on terrorism nowadays, Syrians are being discriminated.

Recently in the news, the controversy over whether Syrian refugees should be allowed in the United States has made an impact on American citizens. Thirty-one governors in the United States have agreed on not allowing them into the country due to many various reasons. The reason why I am interested in this research topic is because of my safety in this country. The terrorist attacks on Paris were due to the fact that the French government allowed Syrian refugees into their country. Members of ISIS pretended to be Syrian refugees and than fulfilled their attack on Paris within the next few days. This affects me because if this happens in the United States, my life could be in jeopardy due to terrorism. Also, I am from Boston, Massachusetts and the Boston Bombings happened on April 15, 2013 and brought the city of Boston in tears. So, I can relate to the governors in these states on not allowing the Syrian refugees in America because I was hit with an act of terrorism in my city within a mile from where I was standing.

For Syrian refugees, I have three main articles on how they have been looked upon and treated by the United States. The first article I found is "Syrian Refugees Not Welcome in 31 U.S. States" by Ashley Fantz and Ben Brumfield. The central main theme in this article is that the thirty-one states are against Syrian refugees because they think they are a security threat to America. This is because of the Paris attacks in France and how a number of ISIS members pretended to be Syrian refugees. The interests at stake here is that in order to keep this country safe the best way is by not allowing them in at this moment until the problem or threat of ISIS has decreased. The governors of these thirty-one states value safety of our country over allowing protection and freedom to the Syrian refugees. This article is biased because it is coming from the point of view of the thirty-one governors who disagree with allowing them in. These governors are going to stick up for what they believe in and give the negative sides of why allowing the Syrian refugees into the country will hurt our country.

In addition to this, my second article is from the point of view of a Syrian Refugee. This is the complete opposite of coming from the point of view of a governor. In this case, the Syrian refugee is biased towards allowing and keeping Syrian refugees in America because the standard of living is extremely better than in Syria. The second article is" Syrian Refugees in the U.S. Feel a Backlash" by Alex Altman. The main point about this article is how bad living in Syria was and the move to America was life changing. He was able to have a job and provide the necessities in life to his family. In this case, he has been stereotyped on multiple occasions by citizens of the United States for being Syrian and basically looked down upon because of where he is from.

The last article I read is "What You Should Know About the Syrian Refugee Controversy" by Joe Carter. This article basically gives the background information one needs to know about a Syrian refugee. The article describes the definition of a refugee and why the Syrian refugees are fleeing their country. They have been fleeing their country due to a long-term civil war between the countries Sunni majority and the president's Shia Alawite sect. More than eleven million citizens of Syria have been displayed, half of Syria's pre-crisis-population, due to the war. There is no bias information in this article due to the fact that it is more informative than argumentative.

I believe this research question is arguable. The comparison in reactions from the late 19th century Italian immigrants compared to contemporary Syrian refugees sparks an argument because there are multiple different views and vantage point on this topic. Most sources I have found have had negative reactions towards Syrian refugees coming into America because of terrorism. Multiple different sources are afraid of allowing them into the country. These different perspectives do not change my own because I am a strong believer in that many Americans have reacted positively towards Italian immigrants and negatively towards Syrian refugees. This is blatant and can be proven within the articles I have found. In the end, the different between the way Americans view Italians and Syrians is extremely different.
