Growing up in Chicago, is has been know to have a historical connection to crime. From mobsters like Al Capone to recent gangsters that roam the streets, it has one of the highest murder rates in the country up there with Detroit. Now this is where my topic comes in, as I want to know gun laws surrounding people who buy them and use them. Like with a crime rate that is increasing what are these laws really doing to help the public. The laws clearly have a ton of loop holes as in Chicago you can't purchase a gun in the city anymore I believe but you can drive 20 minutes to the suburbs and buy one without any problem. There's got to be a better system in place to help limit some people from buying a gun who shouldn't have one. That's why in my paper I will explain how gun laws are needed and how people who don't like them are the ones who are hurting society the most.

My first source by Karan Ridder is an article that tries to depict the issues with both sides of gun laws. She tries to fight for both sides in this article as she can see the pros and cons for each side. For the one side her main claim is that having gun control will get guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. People like the killers who are responsible for mass shootings such as Sandy Hook. On the other hand, she notes that the right to bear arms is a right that everyone owns. The right of the people to protect themselves is clearly working as some stats show that the more people with guns are lowering the crime rate. Those are her two main claims, but she seems to side with the anti gun laws side, since a lot of factual evidence is presented and stats vs the other side which is just opinions. Her credibility is strong since she working for a large news company and has the support of their editors so the article wouldn't be published without them approving the material she is writing about.

My next source is an article from US Today by Gene Sloan, which is about a recent news story about a toddler reaching in his mom's purse to play around but instead finds his moms gun. When finding it he is able to discharge it and kill her. There is really a bias in this article since it is only reporting on the side that would support gun control. This article is favoring the people that see these cases and want the conceal and carry laws fixed and gun control changed. The credibility for Gene is high since this article is coming from a well known news source and has editors looking over his work. People rely on this news source for articles that are factual and up to date.

My last article comes from Stephen Collinson where it talks about the meeting that was held under President Obama and his cabinet where they discussed recent gun law improvements they should make due to the rapid increases in murders around the country. There was a bit of bias in the article as it is favoring the side of putting gun control in affect. The article is very one sided, most of the quotes are about gun control, there is only one that is somewhat on the border. That quote being one discussing how Obama knows that gun control can't take out gun violence completely but lessen it. Clearly the author is for putting more control in the government when it comes to gaining access to a firearm. The credibility for the article is high since its from CNN and that is well know source for news and article with facts.

As we can see there is a lot going on about guns in the news and how they should be controlled, as when a child is shot down in the streets just walking by stray bullets people bring up that gun laws are too weak and that the people purchasing the guns should not be allowed to get them if they have a record or something. My sources show that there is a problem going on in the country surrounding guns and what governs people to get them. The laws need to be rewritten or put in place in some places as this is a large problem going on. These facts are arguable though as many people believe that gaining possession of a firearm is needed to protect themselves. There are two sides to the question, can you really protect yourself without gun laws, some people think that having a weapon should be a last resort but others believe it's a first call. The main fight for one side is the out of hand violence that has been happening, while the other side is fighting for their bill of rights. In the sources we see that majority of people see there is a problem and are leaning towards gun control, but there is are some people that can see both sides of the fight. To understand the battle, we are fighting we must know each side detailed reasons for their plans, and that's what I need to research more about to gain a better understanding of the problem at hand.
