The picture "Punk and Monk" was taken and submitted to a National Geographic Photo Contest. The popular band Fall Out Boy for their album "Save Rock and Roll" then later used it. The picture depicts two boys walking down a street and they are presumably brothers. In this picture called "Punk and Monk" by Roger Stonehouse he depicts two brothers from the small country of Myanmar and even though they look identical, their personalities couldn't be more different and this is probably because of there upbringing as children and how they chose to react to the world.

The first thing you notice in the picture is that the brothers look identical but they are dressed totally different. The one on the left is labeled the "punk" because he is wearing an ACDC shirt and black gloves and tattered gloves. He is also smoking and he doesn't look like he is old enough to be doing that yet. The one on the right is labeled the "monk" because he is wearing a red robe similar to what monks wear in temples. From the way both boys are dressed we can guess one of them is more "holy" and wants to live his life peacefully and be happy and love everyone, like a typical monk, and the other one has a screw the world attitude and he is going to do his thing no matter what people say or tell him to do. This is also just an assumption both of the boys could be the exact same but just like to dress a certain way or it is the only clothes they own. They could also be the opposite of each other, so the "punk" is actually the "monk" and the "monk" is actually the "punk". No one will ever know what their actually personalities are unless they have met them.

The other thing you notice in the picture is the cluttered background. To the right there are clothes littering the streets and a woman crouching near them and looking like she is about to pick some garments up and put them in her bin that's next to her to use them now or bring them home to use later. These clothes also look dirty and are just thrown on the ground and piled up like no one wanted them anymore and just threw them out. Also further in the background, it looks like it is a market and there is little shacks with boxes and things under them to sell. The road in the picture is dirt so from this we can tell that the city doesn't have a good infrastructure. The photographer probably included the background to show how the boys grew up in a poor town.

Myanmar is a really poor country and we presume that the boys were raised in this country. From assuming that you can also infer that they probably weren't the wealthiest and lived a really poor life. The way children are raised and brought up changes the way they look at the world and how they want to react to it. The "punk" on the left who probably grew up poor and in a rough neighborhood probably got angry with his life and started acting out and not caring about his family, which lead to him hanging out with a bad group that introduced him to smoking. The "monk" on the right probably saw his rough life as a blessing and he wanted to make people feel the same way and be happy and at peace like him even though they don't have that much money and to lead them to a life of helping others and doing good things around the community. This is just an assumption and both of the boys could be the exact same and normal kids and just like to dress this certain way because it is comfortable for them.

Even though they are dressed completely different and their personalities might be different too, they are still holding hands. They are holding hands because they are brothers and that is a bond unlike no other. No matter how different you and your brother are you will still have each other's back and will still love each other no matter what. Due to their rough upbringing this makes their bond even stronger because they needed to be there for each other in times of need, when things were rough. Even though they are still brothers and love each other a lot they can still have totally different personalities. The boys personalities are different because of the way they were brought up and how they personally chose to react to the world.
