The elements within a picture are what capture the viewer's attention. They allow the viewer to interpret every aspect of the photo in the way that they find most suitable even if it does not reflect exactly what the creator intended. Images have a way of speaking to the viewer in a personal way that translates much different than a written text. In Chen Zhongqiu's, "Watching the Qiantang River Flow," he utilizes a unique focal point, questionable body positioning, and intriguing color contrast to prove that today's society is too absorbed in technology to acknowledge the world that surrounds them.

The focal point is the one portion of the image that the eyes are drawn to immediately when introduced. Zhongqiu emphasized the importance of the wave by making it the center of attention while also consuming a majority of the space in the photo. The creator attracts the viewer with the use of interesting texture which makes the wave appear realistic and seem like it is popping out of the screen. The splotchy texture stands out in comparison to the people and sky. The scattered splashes emphasize how unpredictable nature can be and it is ironic because the people obviously pay no interest to the safety hazards involved in this excursion. Unlike oceans, rivers are typically rather smooth and represent fluidity that is not present in waves. The change in texture of the river demonstrates how the overly obsessed technology phenomenon is coming more close to home and causing a commotion in a typically calm environment. The wave especially attracts the eye of the viewer and the people in the photo on the left side of the image because it shows the wave beginning to crash down with no end in sight. The direction of the tip of the wave is heading towards the large group of civilians which shows that nature will act in its regular fashion regardless if society has come to alter its path or stand in the way. Although the community of people is clearly occupied by their electronics in their hands, the wave pays no interest to them and will not change in relation to that. Nature overpowers every aspect of society no matter how much people fight it or try to disregard it completely as if nothing is happening.

Body positioning within this image shows a desolate group of people. Although there are many people surrounding the area, each individual is paying no attention to the person standing next to them as if they believe they are alone. All of the onlooker's heads are facing forward and there is clearly no contact being made between any individuals. Although they are standing extremely close, each person has made enough distance so that they are not actually toughing anyone. This demonstrates a disconnect between the other people of the world in addition to nature. The image does not include faces or specific details such as hair color or height because it could be anyone in this situation. Although the group is all from the same general region and cultural group, it emphasizes the similarity in the way it affects people all over the world. Although we all come from different backgrounds, the technology phenomenon is affecting each of us in the same way. The occurrence of people ignoring one another happens far too often in today's society. Many people are more absorbed in their own technology and life than the ambience. The virtual interactions are taking over as children and millennials of this time have difficulty connecting with others while face to face which is evident in the photo. If the people photographed knew how to communicate with one another they would be turned towards each other and discussing what is occurring in front of them at the moment, but instead they are all facing forwards preparing images that they will most likely share via social media accounts. Along with the estranged body positioning, many of the individuals photographed have their arms raised in the air with a telephone or camera attached in their hands. The individuals with their hands raised also have their shoulders back and their chests poked out which shows a sense of confidence and comfort with the situation. The irony is that although nature is barreling towards them with full force, they are still clearly relaxed and are not worried. There is no sign of anyone turning to move from the wave's path as everyone continues to completely face the wave without any pivoting shoulders. This demonstrates the entitlement that humans have in this age and shows how they believe that the world is going to change for them. They do not feel as if they have to budge for the incoming wave because it must stop for them so it does not cause them harm or come into their way.

Furthermore, the bold and natural colors within the waves and sky beautify the scenery while making humans seem as if they do not belong in their loudly colored shirts. The vast number of colors in the solid and patterned shirts emphasize the obnoxious demeanor of society when it comes in contact with nature. People are always attempting to be the center of attention and it derives from our selfish nature which can be seen as the vague colors of the wave compare to the flamboyant colors of the crowd's shirts, yet the wave is still magnificent. The steady color of hair and hairstyle among the people of the crowd accentuate how each one of them have the same common obsession with their technology. Also, it is quite ironic that the photographer is equally guilty in risking his life for the sole purpose of creating the perfect photo and symbolizing the phenomenon. He is hypocritical in the situation while pointing out the flaws in the actions of today's society because he is engaging in the same behavior. Its consistency translates to everyone else in the world who shares this misconception that electronics are superior to all other things, including nature. The somber, cloudy sky in the background shows the dim future of society if everyone continues to obsess over electronics. The darkened sky seems as if it is foreshadowing a somewhat gloomy ending that could be near in sight. The shadows within the descending wave and sky reiterate the depth and severity of the problem. In addition to the shadows, the earthy tones seem much more realistic and pragmatic than the people and their intensely colored shirts.

Chen Zhongqiu takes advantage of an outstanding focal point, problematic body positioning, and captivating color contrast to justify the point that people's minds are completely absorbed by their electronics and other types of technology and cannot focus on the things that surround them in "Watching the Qiantang River Flows." The beauty of photos is that the analysis is solely in the eye of the interpreter. Although the image could just be a photo to exemplify the height and beauty of the waves in the Qiantang River, it also reveals the issues that arise in the daily life of an average person in our society. It demonstrates how detrimental our society is to nature in a subtle way that is also impactful.
