Brothers can be defined as a man or boy in relation to other sons and daughters of his parents. Brothers and siblings in general hold much more significance than this definition. In the picture portfolio, created by Katie Allgor, you can see slides of photos that show the significance of having siblings and the impact they create. The portfolio is called “Brothers” which is self-explanatory, it goes through the slides showing all the different qualities of her brothers. The last slide projects an overall message of the true significance of having siblings, and no matter the good or bad qualities they hold, they still impact their other siblings lives in tremendous ways.

The coloring in the pictures throughout the slides are all the same: colorful, with a plain white background. The coloring in the photos express all the different qualities and emotions throughout the slides and better convey their messages, as well as make the portfolio seem more modern. If the photos had been in black in white, I think the tone of the portfolio wouldn’t have as much of a happier connotation and friendlier more recent feel. The colors throughout all the photos in the portfolio are bright yellows, reds, and blues and shine emphasize on the expression of the subject’s faces. The plain white background also holds its own significance. The meaning of the color white is usually associated with purity, innocence, wholeness, and completion. Going through the slides the same characters appear usually captured alone in photos or in a group no larger than 3 of them. Once you get to the final slide it shows all 4 of the siblings together which reiterates the idea of the “wholeness” and the “complete picture.”

Looking throughout the slides it’s also obvious that the amount of pictures are varied. On pages 3,4, and 7 it shows only 3 pictures on the slides. On slides 4 and 5 there are only 2 pictures. And on slides 6 and 8 there is an abundance of photos. On the slides with only 2 pictures the slides are described by words like “friendly” and “angry.” There are less pictures in these slides because these two emotions usually balance each other out and all siblings are usually constantly either friendly or angry. The slides with 3 pictures are described by words like “weird”, “hungry”, and “unique.” These slides have less pictures because not everyone has siblings that fit under these descriptions and they show less favorable qualities. Lastly an abundance of photos are on slides whose descriptions include “huggable” and “wouldn’t have them any other way.” These photos are more abundant because they are captioned more friendly and loving qualities and are more significant when expressing the importance of having siblings. The more photos on the slides represent the more those qualities are present (so more good than bad). Most people with siblings can agree that they love their siblings despite their unfavorable qualities.

This portfolio is also random in the listing of the qualities that siblings bring. This can be directly related to the randomness and chaos siblings are said to bring in everyday life. Life the amount of pictures the pictures positioning is very similar. The slides with 2 or 3 pictures on them show the pictures all lined up next to each other usually around the same size showing equality. Whereas, the 2 slides with the abundance of pictures are all over the place and look like more of a collage. These 2 slides again show the unorganized chaos of having brothers. An example of this is on slide 6, the photos are all different sizes and aren’t lined up like the other slides, the slide shows the pictures not “perfect,” and rather chaotic and all over the place. This slide showing its imperfections of unique sizing and lining represents the imperfections that also come with siblings. Specifically, on slide 8, the photo on the far right depicts chaos and shows siblings trying to escape while other siblings grab them. Chaos is expressed everywhere in that photo and is expressed even more throughout their facial expressions.

Facial Expression is also a big part of the photos throughout the slides. In slide 1, captioned “Weird,” 2 of the 3 pictures show the boys in the image looking directly at the camera. In the first photo of the slide, a boy is on a unicycle with eyes looking straight at the camera. In the second photo, the boy has a shaving cream “beard,” also looking directly at the camera. And the last photo on the slide, shows a boy with a spoon on his face looking at something in the distance. These photos show the boys in them know they are doing abnormal activities and continue to do so knowing the moment is becoming recorded. The 3rd slide, captioned “Always Hungry,” shows the same sort of facial expressions. The boy in the 3 pictures is always smiling or making funny faces while eating and looking directly at the camera. Slide 4, captioned “Sometimes Angry,” shows both boys angrily looking directly at the camera. This again shows they know the moment was captured and decided to look that way on purpose. Slide 5, captioned “Friendly,” shows both boys smiling and looking directly at the camera again while doing some type of gesture. Slide 6, captioned “Huggable,” differs from majority of the other slides. Slide 6 Shows 4 out of 5 photos where the subjects in the photos are not looking directly at the camera. They are not looking directly at the camera because they are more “in-the-moment” pictures and reflect a true sibling relationship.

Overall after viewing this photo portfolio anyone could truly see the whole picture. Siblings bring lots of unique qualities, unorganized chaos, as well as good memories to treasure. Siblings are worth loving despite their flaws.
