Freedom is not something that is fully given to children because people must grow and prove to others that they are able to take care of their selves. This visual text tells the story of a girl who experienced the freedom of traveling for the first time to an unknown country without parents’ guidance. It is directed to people who are nervous to leave their known “bubble” and step out into a new world and tells the story of Jamie Orthos, who traveled throughout the country of Greece in the summer of 2016. The visual analysis goes in-depth on a girl’s journey through a foreign country and its attractions. Each picture tells a different story through colors, scenery, and emotions.

The purpose of the PowerPoint is to subtly portray a message to the viewers before the pictures are even shown. The first slide is titled, “Exploring a New World”; This title automatically tells the viewer that it will be a story about a person traveling. What an untrained eye would not realize is that the PowerPoint’s slides were purposely made blue and white to represent the colors of the Greek flag, where the “New World” takes place.

If the viewer did not pick up on the blue and white background, picture #1 gives it away that the travels were taken place in Greece. The picture brings out the meaning of the colors of the Greek flag because the blue and white portrayed throughout all the pictures represent the sea and sky and allow the viewer to assume that majority of the attractions were near water. Greece is known for their crystal blue water and that is something that the country takes pride in. In many of the pictures, the viewer can see all the travel events taken outside. The author most likely chose the outdoors setting because the sun brings out the true colors of all the attractions that were visited and also shows the immense amount of detail shown in the Parthenon and church in Patras.

The viewer can see that the text tells the story of someone who is traveling. The order of the pictures is put in a distinct order to show the emotions taken place throughout the whole journey from start to finish. It starts with the excitement of arriving in a new country and constantly shows the emotion of everyone being happy on the journey, but ends in a mellow tone of two people in the airport. The author put the text “until next year” to show the bittersweet moments of leaving but knowing that they will be back. Unstated assumptions are the emotions of the people. The author is only stating what is happening in each slide but does not say what emotions everyone is feeling. The look on the children faces and body language shows that at different events there are different emotions. Although everyone is happy, at different sights the viewer can see the difference through how big everyone is smiling and/or laughing.

Every picture in the visual story is taken place at a different spot in Greece. These stories can also be shown through the outfit choices of the producer. During serious times such as on the third slide, girls are seen with their shoulders covered and boys are seen in long pants and button downs. The author could have chosen this to be a part of the visual text to show that some of the places that were visited were not “typical” attraction for people to visit unless they were on a religious retreat. At other times such as visiting the Parthenon, the girl in the picture is seen in shorts in a tank top to represent the casualness of the event.

In the visual analysis, there is a story not only about the different places that were visited but also the relationships that were made with people. The text starts with the producer arriving in the country with what looks like a sibling and a bunch of unknown people. By the time the viewer is in the last three pictures, they can see that relationships have been made with people. Body language shown through the four girls shows that a close bond has been made. There are loving elements shown through them hugging, but also the idea that they are goofing around also the viewer can see through them laughing. At a later slide although there is no laughing happening, the viewer can see the relationships through everyone sitting extremely close to each other and wearing matching outfits showing how far the relationships have come.

Altogether, the visual text shows the journey of a girl in an unknown country. When trying to find whom a person is, traveling is often encouraged. The pictures don’t only provide a way of memory but they tell a story if a person was to look deeper.
