In today’s society people have come up with a solution to not knowing things, “Just Google It”. In many ways this method is very helpful, having any kind of information readily available and the ease of access to this information. Yet this picture depicts a different story. By looking at action and color, we see the symbolism of failure and hopelessness. The photo lets us know that Banksy feels that the internet is taking over the everyday lives of people.

This picture represents everything you see in the world today. If you walk down the street, you see youth and young adults buried with their heads blinded by technology. Technology is replacing things from generations past, such as a rattle or plastic keys has now become a cell phone or an iPad. Banksy shows through his depiction of Albert Einstein that technology is taking over the younger generations.

This picture of Albert Einstein is one of the most relevant picture’s I have seen of the more recent decades of America. Albert Einstein is known for a lot of scientific discoveries, the most notable are his Theory of Relativity, and his Physics Nobel Peace Prize of 1921. Einstein’s theory of relativity was used to develop the atomic bomb that would end World War Two. Even though he has never taken an IQ test his intelligence is estimated to be that of a genius. All these accomplishments and awards and yet Einstein looks as if he has hit rock bottom. His hand holding his head shows the observer that he is beaten mentally. His hand placement is blocking his view of what the actual problem is, Google. Google has changed the way that the public gains knowledge and the way that they do research.

Albert Einstein shows defeat in the picture by his lost gaze into the distance. This expression is the one you have when you wonder what went wrong, and how could this have happened to me. Albert looks as if he is looking out into the world at you and I blaming us for the position he is in. The problem society faces today is that we are so used to having easy access to information at our finger tips, we don’t go and discovery things for ourselves. We observe the lesson learned through other’s trials and errors when we never really grasp the concept being learned.

It is the law when you are out drinking in public your container needs to be in a bag or concealed in some type of way, but Albert’s bag is half way off his bottle. This lets us know that he is at the point where he doesn’t care about our opinion towards his actions. Instead he is trying to find something to numb the pain he is feeling about being over taken by something that doesn’t even have a brain. His reaction to seeing the word Google lets us know that he is very vulnerable and discouraged. Lastly Einstein is in a very slouched and defenseless position. This position alone suggest that knows that there is no chance for man to outsmart the computer.

Color also plays a very big part in interpreting this photo. The shirt on Albert’s body is white and so is his hair. This lets us know that he is in his later years and he is full of wisdom and knowledge. Besides his hair and his skin, the rest of his upper body is black. I think Banksy put that there to let us know that he feels as if Albert is mourning the death of human intelligence.

In the drawling Einstein’s pants and the bag around the whisky bottle are both brown. Showing us this is where he rooted down and is finding most of his comfort. From sitting down to drowning out the thoughts of being beaten by man’s own creation these things transfer over into the American society. The older more experienced generations are looking down in disgust because what they created to assist them has taken over the younger generations. They know that the younger generations are the future and their thoughts are there is no hope for us now.

Even though Einstein represents the older generation the company “Google” is a fairly new company. The word is highlighted in the picture because it is one of the only two things that are in color. Making it pop off the grey wall which is in the background. The second “o” in the word google is in yellow which symbolizes caution. Banksy could be telling us at the center of google you need to be cautious, because with great power comes great responsibility. Banksy is telling us that even though something may look great on the outside, with a little observation the inside is covered with lies. Albert represents the older generation as he looks on to the word google in disgust because people very freely put their lives on to the internet without batting their eyes.

As stated above the photo represents the symbolism of failure and defeat. We gather both of these conclusions by looking at Albert Einstein’s actions and the colors that portray him in the painting. Banksy does a great job incorporating real life concepts into two dimensional wall art. There is defiantly a real world issue of youth and young adults being captivated by technology. Even though Google and the internet give you ease of access, humans need to stop relying on technology for every problem.
