Amy Tan in her essay “Mother Tongue” discusses how the language has a strong effect on our life and also how it has effect in the judgment of the person. She started her essay with her mother’s story and said how her mother suffered because of her limited English. Her mother is an immigrant from China who came to the United States and raises her daughter in the United States. The mother suffers because of her English in so many different ways, for instance, people were ignoring her or not serving her as well as they should because of her limited English until her daughter become a teenager and started helping her with talking to people. Also, people who speak broken English most of the time know they are taken advantage of, and battle more with social associations. That states the problem of immigrating parents with English and how that affects their life. Amy Tan’s main point of the essay was to deliver a message for people who born in a country that speak English and raised by parents who speaks English, that immigrants who don't speak English perfectly are not less intelligent than people who speak English in a perfect way. Moreover, Amy Ton mentioned more than subject about the language like the power of the language, the types of English and some other subjects, and how those subjects are related to the person life, especially immigrants.

Starting with the power of the language, the power of the language especially may shape the way people think. For example, the way people talk in different languages like English, Russian or Chinese is different because they focus on different things in their verbs details. For example Chinese focus more on the details than English speakers like in English the speaker just say “uncle” but in Chinese, the speaker suppose to specify like my mother’s brother or my father’s brother (Boroditsky). That shows how people have a different way of thinking depends on their languages. For instance if someone speaks Chinese than he starts to learn English, he/she will face many challenges in expressing his/her sentences because the differences between the two languages, and also his mind is familiar with the Chinese way of expressing the sentence and it is hard for him/her to change it to the English way.

Moreover, the language may let people judge the person intelligence from the way he/she speaks. That happens often in our daily life for non-native speakers. People should see the life from another perspective to know how hard it is to learn another language and speak it as will they speak their native language. For instance, the idea of immigrants people who don’t speak English well are not less intelligent than people who speak English well was proved be Amy Tan when she points out that her grades in sciences classes and math were higher than her grades in English. Also she points out that she saw a survey about that immigrant's students majors and she found out the immigrants student especially Chinese prefer to study English instead of studying a major that relate to language. Moreover, learning a foreign language give some benefits for the brain like improve the power of the brain, researches show that people who speak multi-languages may have better skills in solving problems because their brain response faster for the problem because their brain get practiced by switching between the languages back and forth. Also they become more open minded for the new culture gaps they might face in their life (Cherian).

Second, the English that people use can be divided into two types simple and proper English. The simple English is the one the Amy Tan’s mother use which is the easiest way to speak English without any complex grammar structure or hard vocabulary. On the other hand, the proper English which always used in speeches or to talk with people who are not family or friends like professors, government employees, etc. The proper English is the type that the Amy Tan’s mother misses and most of the immigrants’ parents and students which make their life in English society harder and make people judge them in the wrong way.

Amy Tan changed her view to the language when she grew up. She was ashamed of her mother’s English when she was in school because some of her friends didn't understand her mother and she saw how people don’t understand or ignore her mother when she is talking. However, when she grew up, she saw her mother’s English from a different perspective and she understood how immigrants parents face huge problems with English. That what leads her to write her book in simple English to help her mother and immigrants people to understand it. And she said, “ I knew I had succeeded where it counted when my mother finished reading my book and gave me her verdict: “so easy to read””(346).

This "broken" English conveys her nearer to her mother and gives her that well manufactured and adorable association with her. She additionally makes the point that individuals who don't talk legitimate or "broken" English like her mother, are frequently not treated ideal in the society and appear as though they are not smart enough. This novel is a decent eye opener for those who some of the time have had an experience with some person that does not talk proper English and judge them. This is a typical oversight that even the ones that have worked guardians make. We frequently make suppositions on individuals' competency in the public eye. Amy gives numerous cases of how she needed to assist her mother with the end goal for her to get the right consideration. This is something that numerous outsider guardians need to do keeping in mind the end goal to go ahead with the day, by requesting that their children help them read letters that come in the mail, or even filling out applications for different things.

Individuals who are knowledgeable may think about these people as unmindful and unwilling to learn, but rather this is not generally their decision and like Amy's mother they are continually attempting to do it without anyone's help yet toward the end they need to turn to their families for assistance. Amy makes a better than average showing with regards to with attempting to clarify her mother struggle and in addition her. It is clear to the reader what an association she has with her mother and how her battles made her more insubordinate and accomplish more with the best possible English she knew and was frequently reprimanded by educators. She never did that well on English accomplishment tests, so she was told she ought to accomplish something not related to English. This novel ideally will assist the general population with misinterpretations about foreigners who don't communicate in English, to not pass judgment, but rather to assist so our general public does not bring them down as it as of now does.

Amy Tan being addressed her audience of scholars at an exceptionally oversimplified level to stand out enough to be noticed. “I am not a scholar of English or literature” This strategy would be a decent method to utilize on the grounds that on the off chance that she displays herself as depicting that she knows everything the room loaded with scholars would not take her genuine and some may even get to be a predisposition towards her.
