In God is Disappointed in You, the reader is shown a contradictory rendition of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. This version of Da Vinci’s well known piece of art is called The Last Call. The point of this picture is to allow the reader to better relate to what is going on in the text by modernizing what was happening during Jesus’ life. This picture allows the viewer to connect and better understand what was going on in a time period that we are not able to relate to. By looking at Wheeler’s image, we can see the way that this event has been modernized to clarify our understanding of The Last Supper; this is important because it helps the image correlate to the text interpreting the original meaning.

One of the reasons that this story was written was because cartoonist, Shannon Wheeler, had never been able to read the entire Bible and she wanted Mark Russel to explain the Book of Job. They were able to shorten stories from the Bible so that people could better understand the events occurring. One of these stories is shown in Wheeler’s picture The Last Call. By looking at this picture the reader is able to understand all of the complexity of this situation in one simple picture. However, by changing the scene from a dinner to a bar, the reader has a different approach to the context. The last call refers to the last time that people can buy drinks at a bar, so this is a very strange way to illustrate a time as moral and famous as this. Jesus wanted this meal to be somewhat celebratory of his life, not so much an argument or grieving party. Now the reader sees the situation as more laid back, not so much as a grieving process, but as a social gathering.

In the original picture, The Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples are gathering one last time because he knows his time is coming to an end. In this picture they are more concerned with what is going to happen when Jesus is gone, rather than the fact that he will soon be gone. In the text, the disciples do not seem concerned about Jesus dying at all because they are only seeming to care about who will be the next leader (209). They are arguing amongst themselves and asking Jesus things like “It’s me, isn’t it” (209). Wheeler did a great job at incorporating this into this iconic picture, The Last Call. Jesus is pictured in the middle and looks as if he is depressed and tired of the bickering going on around him because the disciples appear to be arguing amongst themselves rather than grieving about the situation. This should have been a time that they were all sad and concerned about what was going to happen Jesus. A moment like this should have been cherished, but in this picture Jesus looks miserable, and his disciples are not concerned about what is going to happen to Jesus but rather what is going to happen to them.

If this image were to be found in the Bible, it would be confusing to a Christian as to why Jesus and his disciples were in a bar. This is a very odd way to compare Jesus’ last supper with his closet friends. When thinking about this event, one would normally assume it was a time of grieving over a very nice meal. However, in this image, the disciples are with Jesus at a bar, and they are arguing about who is going to take over his leadership role next. They do not seem to be that sad at all. This picture is trying to aim towards an audience that is working to understand Christianity and this event in a more simplistic manner. The way that Wheeler portrays this picture almost demoralizes one of the most moral human beings that ever walked this Earth. It is making the reader take this situation into a completely different perspective than they are used to. This pictures helps the reader picture Jesus as a regular guy having one last drink with his best friends. This makes it easier for the viewer or reader to understand the context of what is going on in this religious event.

Wheeler’s image in this story helps incorporate the ideas of Russell’s story, allows the reader to better understand how Russell is trying to simplify the long, complex story of the Bible, and shows a different context from which this event could have been interpreted. Russell made this story very modernized and gave the reader a whole new perspective of the story of Jesus. This image helps elaborate on what the text around it is trying to portray, but it mostly simplifies this complex story that the cartoonist herself was never really able to completely read and understand.
