Most people entering college wonder how their experience will impact them, and what kind of choices they will make. This is a challenging time for people, but the most important thing to remember is that it is to act responsibly and make the right choices. There is no longer anyone to tell that person how to spend their time. There are more things to worry about, but the most important include study habits, how one utilizes spare time, and deciding where one will be at the end of four years. Nick Gallucci’s Good vs. The Bad uses several elements in order force comparison, and bring about a call to action. Firstly, the placement of images next to each other brings the viewer to subconsciously compare the two images. Secondly, the images use contrasting colors to decipher between good and bad. Thirdly, the ordering of images allows the viewer to visualize where they will be after their four years in college. College is a trying time for everyone, and everyone deserves the right to know where their decisions are leading them.

Nick Gallucci uses a technique of juxtaposition in order to force a comparison by the viewer in regards to the images. This is made possible by the brains instinctive reaction to visuals. When more than one image is received by the eyes, the brain takes the images and attempts to see which is closer. It is through this sequence of events that depth is created, but it is also through this sequence that people instinctively compare separate images. With this stylistic choice the viewer will automatically process the two images depicted, and attempt to distinguish the difference between the two. For example, one will notice that the three groups of images follow a pattern in which the good side of things is place on the left while the bad is placed on the right. The first set of images depicts a student hard at work on the left. He is studying properly with a plethora of books surrounding him, and no opportunity for distraction. Meanwhile, on the right is a student with homework being pushed to the side in favor of watching television. With juxtaposition playing a role, the viewer is able to process the two images and decide where they stand on this spectrum as well which side is the correct one to be on. There is a similar effect in the proceeding images with the differentiation between leisure activities such as drinking beer, or opting for an activity such as playing basketball with friends. In addition, the last set of images depicts two places a student will be at the end of their college tenure. On the one hand, one can be headed on a straight path toward a happy and successful life. On the other hand, one can be headed toward a reality of not knowing what the future hold, and will have no idea what to do. The idea of two contradicting images representing two lifestyles gives the viewer something to delve into, and analyze. This is all made possible by the stylistic choice of the artist.

A very important aspect of art happens to be choice of color. Color influences a person’s emotions in a very strong way. For example, on a rainy day it is dark outside, and thus a person is ill motivated to do anything that day. In contrast, one is much more enthused to take on the day when waking up to the sun shining, and clear skies as far as the eye can see. Clearly even the color outside heavily influences a person’s mood for the remainder of that day. This same concept applies to the color choices made by Nick Gallucci in The Good vs. The Bad. After comparing the images, the viewers are able to distinguish between the two based off of the fact that the poor choices that are made are depicted in darker colors. For the first set of images, the student who is diligently studying is depicted in a brighter light turning the reader on to this image. The second set of images shows a group of students playing basketball in a bright setting. Contrary to this, the opposing picture is depicted in a darker setting. Showing these images in this way brings the reader to focus on one image over the other which in the case would be the correct way of doing things. This clearly allows the reader to focus on how to properly go through college which in turn distinguishes between right and wrong. The color choice allows for this distinguishing to occur.

Finally, the last element to be analyzed will be the order in which the images are placed in. As the eye follows a set of images, the brain is likely to break down and investigate why it is placed in a certain order. In this case, it is clear that the actions of a student in regards to studying, and spare time lead to where one will be at the end of college. On the one hand, a student will have a clear direction post-graduation. On the other hand, a student will be completely lost post-graduation. This is all due to the fact that eyes follow patterns, and the brain makes conclusions. The stylistic choice to put these images in this specific order allow the eyes to follow allowing and in turn come to the conclusion that the last set of images show where one will be at the end given that they are placed last. It is almost as if it is following a set of directions which lead to one end or another. Placement makes an impact in art it terms of how a person will process these decisions.

Stylistic choices in art affect how a person will perceive the piece as a whole, and can drastically affect the delivery of the intended message. In regards to the visuals presented by Nick Gallucci, three important choices were made in an effort to send the intended message. This message is that making the right choices while in college will lead to a clear path post-graduation. The elements implemented in order to achieve this were placing images next to each other, the use of color, and the order in which these images were placed. The target audience which is that of college students allows for conclusions to be drawn as well as lessons to be learned. This work of art, The Good vs. The Bad is intended to help incoming college students be aware of the responsibility they now hold.
