Selecting this image for me was pretty easy. I am a firm believer in fighting against racism and having the whole world have the same thoughts that everyone is human. People claim that our society has came a very long way since the mid 1900’s and the racial tension that went on in that era. I agree that we have come a long way since then, but we still have a long way to go. People all over our country are getting discriminated for attributes such as their religion, race, ethnicity, disabilities, etc. Nationally, protests are breaking out everywhere like the riots in Charlotte, the sitting for the national anthem in sporting events, and many more.

This images features a handful of crayola crayons aligned next to each other. Each crayon is a different color or shade. Despite the difference in color, every single crayon pictured here is labeled with the same exact name, “flesh”. It does not matter what differences they share, in the end they all the same thing, they are all crayons. This is a great comparison to our world today. The crayons are all the people in the people in the world. The label is a symbol of equality and it shows that it doesn’t matter if things are a little different from another but in the end they are all crayons (humans). No one should view someone else differently or negatively if a person has darker skin, likes the same sex, believes in a certian religion, or is handicap in any way. This simple image of a few crayons has a big message and is extremely relevant in terms of the problems our society faces today. The main message of this picture is to treat everyone the same and let everyone have equal opportunities as each because in the end we all the same thing, humans.

The great attribute about this still photograph is that is does not focus in on just one race or specific group of people as it may appear to. Obviously, a person’s first glance at this will think this is clearly referring to issues in terms of a person’s skin color or race. And yes, this image refers to racial issues but also refers to general discrimination and equality issues of many more groups of people and not just african americans or another race. In 2016, we live in a world where although we claim it’s equal for every citizen to have a an opportunity to succeed and accomplish what they wish for. Many bosses might not hire people or pay people as much just because they like the same sex, or because of their religion, or even just because their racial/ethnic backgrounds. This photograph depicts the concept that we are all human in the end and it doesn’t matter at all what we look like but what matters is who we are as people.

This simple image can indirectly affect our emotions indirectly as well. Even though there are inanimate objects as the main subjects, these objects can lead to other thoughts. Since the early 1800’s race and discrimination was a big conflict and people were getting abused and even killed just because a physical trait of theirs. Then in the 1930s-1940s, Hitler helped kill about twelve million people just because he did not approve of their religion, where they came from, or even if they were simply disabled/handicap. Now the world has come a long way since those days but there is a still a long way to go for there to be equal opportunity and no discrimination especially in the United States, the land of the free and a chance for a new beginning. Emotion does play a factor in this because this image can lead to images such as suffering slaves in the 1800’s to painful faces of jewish people in concentration camps in the 1940’s.

In my opinion, I felt this was a perfectly appropriate image for this time period. With the presidential debates stirring up racial tensions in terms of mexican immigrants to the stereotyping of all muslims being terrorists. The world has seen too many deaths such as Trayvon Martin's and the police racial tension is way too high and our country is too divided right now. Also, people are getting discriminated against for their sexual orientation and gender identity struggles as well. This image is relevant to our society struggles because people have to buy into the fact that we are all one species and that’s human. Even though people may look completely different or believe in something that people may disagree with everyone is ultimately the same and should be treated equally and labeled the same.
