What does a smile represent? A smile represents happiness and joy at that time. All aspects of a genuine smile are positive and represent a time where everything at that split moment is going well. The technique of using emotions to persuade a viewer’s opinion is effective, because the viewer can directly relate. They have most likely experienced that emotion, and know how they feel about that certain emotion. Psychology is used in the attempt to persuade the viewer through emotion. For an advertisement to use psychology by targeting someone’s feelings it is sure to stick in their head in order to make a lasting impressions. The Lays advertisement that came out January 10th, 2012 used many different attempts at persuading the reader to believe that their product would lead them to happiness. They used things like a main message, a central message, visual aspects, and a specific color scheme to appeal to the viewers. By observing the main focus of the advertisement which appear to be the girl, you can observe that she is happy and content with where she is and everything that she has in her life. The technique of psychologically attacking someone’s emotional side through relating to a certain thing will for sure get the point across. When used in the instance where it is relating to Lays potato chips it will make the viewers more interested and more likely to enjoy the product.

When analyzing the photo as you would in class you would use the backwards-uppercase G to examine the photo. From doing this the reader will notice the text bolded in black at the top of the screen that states “It takes 12 muscles to smile or simply ingredients.” After reading this message the viewer will be confused as to what the point of the ad is until they look at it in its entirety. They’re insinuating that their product which only contains 3 ingredients can make you smile in comparison to the 12 muscles that it physically take you to smile. The message is clear that Lays brings whomever is enjoying the delicious food happiness and that this is a much easier way by using numerical persuasiveness to say that the 3 ingredients to make a smile are easier then 12 muscles. Following this Lays also tried to make a secondary message easy for reader to interpret by looking in the bottom left corner you see “happiness is simple.” When you link the two messages together you see that the two statements are directly linked together. The 3 ingredients lead to happiness, which is expressed, by the girl on the ad. Then another message that can be understood from the ad is that the 3 three ingredients are so simple and that overall leads to happiness. When you take those two messages and combine them one can interpret that happiness shouldn’t be hard to be attained but better yet it is very easy and in this instance it only takes 3 ingredients.

There are messages that stand out and there area messages that you have to search for. The text stands out because it is easy to see, all you have to do is read it . What you truly have to search for is the meaning and placement of things or colors in the advertisement. By looking at the ad you can see a blue sky and grass in the background. That’s what you see at first glance but you have to ask yourself is there is more and if there is why is it there. The blue-sky represents everything is fine with what it happening at the moment and that everything is calm at the moment. They didn’t choose to put in clouds or to put in a sun because that would of got the message across the same. They wanted to make the ad easy. So they picked essentially two colors for the background and it got the message across. She is enjoying her bag of lays on a nice day in the middle of a cornfield. Even if it is just her, and her lays she will be fine because she is happy and that’s all she need.

If you were to look at the advertisement with a backwards G view then you would start at the main message, which is the quote at the top. Following that it would lead you all the way around looking at the colors and perceiving what they mean, then it would take you to the Lays bag of chip, and finally land on the main part of the advertisement. What will really grab the viewers attention is the joy the little girl expresses when in the presence of the great Lays chip. The message to the viewer once they arrive at the focus of the advertisement is why is this important? It is important because they can see the enjoyment in the girl’s eyes. The setting is set to be very relaxed as it is in a cornfield with nothing else going on except the girl enjoying the lays. The message is that when nothing else is going on at least you got Lays by your side to keep you calm and collect. messages seen in this advertisement are clear and straight to the point and surely can persuade the reader to make a lasting impression about the chips.

The purpose for this magazine advertisement is to display the message that with 3 simple ingredients which the chips are made out of composed in the lays bag can lead you to happiness and a big smile on your face. They used tactics with colors, smaller messages, and numeric comparisons to persuade the viewer of the advertisement that what they are doing is right. With this strategies it was a success to persuade readers to be more interested or at least share the same feeling about the Lays chips someday as it directly connected with the viewers emotions which is an effective way to persuade someone.
