In Eminem and Rihanna’s music video of their collaborative song “Love the Way You Lie” they depict a strong, deep meaning through the lyrics and their use of visual motifs. They chose to portray the main message of their song with the motif of fire burning. Throughout the video the use of fire is highlighted, but as it goes on the fire seems to get bigger and begins to become more destructive. It seems as though this fire represents the destruction that follows an abusive relationship. As they handle the fire, it is burning their skin which represents the pain and horror of the abuse. While watching the video, the girl appears to have mixed emotions towards her abusive boyfriend. She expresses signs of fear and helplessness, but then she reacts with love and affection. This is a common myth in abusive relationships that some people “like” to be abused by their partner. The lyrics, “But that’s alright because I like the way it hurts” shows this contradiction to the usual reaction towards this form of abuse. The recurring issue of domestic violence is presented in a way that impacts the audience by the actors chosen to express the importance of addressing this issue in today society. The symbol of fire goes far beyond and much deeper by showing fire’s unpredictability and its ability to spread widely and cause destruction which relates to the instability in relationships today. The importance of awareness of domestic violence can be understood through literary devices and techniques such as visual motifs, symbols, form, perspective and analysis.

In the end, it is evident that their relationship has come to an end due to the fire burning down the house in which they fight and abuse one another. As the abuse continues, the fire gets bigger and stronger, therefore causing more destruction. This motif is an important image because of its meaning and what it actually stands for. It represents the destruction and pain caused through domestic violence. In the last scene, Rihanna is standing in front of the blazing yellow fire behind her. As the shot fades out, the fire fills up the screen and this metaphor of fire suddenly becomes real. This is a realization that this type of violence and abuse is real and tangible. The tangibility of the blazing fire relates to how frequently this issue occurs in real life relationships every day. This issue is so real and prevalent in today’s society so it is crucial to understand its negative impact. It is an issue in many relationships today and this video’s target was to address this issue. When the guy catches on fire and his skin begins to burn, this shows his past actions have finally caught up with him and he is experiencing the consequences of his actions. When the house is left to burn down in the final scenes, this shows their relationship is no longer strong enough to be together.

Overall, the purpose of this motif is to spread awareness about this issue that occurs every day all around the world. It is evident through the motif of fire, it represents something much more because such a powerful and dangerous symbol is being used to compare it to the abuse. The use of the fire is the best representation of the abuse and domestic violence occurring because both are dangerous and destructive. In this case, fire relates to domestic violence in that they both are unpredictable and cannot always be contained. The message of the music video was exemplified though the visual motif of the fire burning which allows for a clear interpretation. This motif also works with other visual aspects of the video to create meaning. Combined with the alcohol, it is evident the guy finds pleasure in drinking then abusing her. By him turning to drinking, this shows the abuse spreads quickly and can begin to impact other aspects of life as well. Overall, the visual motif of fire can be interpreted further to understand the lyrics and video as a whole and how the use of fire relates directly to abuse.

While this motif is a strong aspect of the video, there are many other elements and techniques used to create this visual image. The use of lighting, color, and shadows help to explain the meaning of the image in a deeper way. For example, the style of the video is very dark and serious. There is a contrast in the setting and mood between Rihanna and Eminem as they sing their lyrics. Rihanna’s parts are dark while Eminem is shown in a light and open field. The use of the dark makeup on Rihanna’s face creates an image of power and superiority. This dark style is also established by the lighting techniques. This use of lighting and shadows helps to create this tone and mood and supports the visual imagery throughout the video. In visual texts, there is always room for interpretation so these techniques help to unmask a deeper meaning behind the images.

As the video opens, Rihanna is shown close up to the camera while the fire behind her is blazing and blurred. It is evident here that Rihanna has no control over the direction or power of the fire. This relates to her relationship because she has no form of dominance over her boyfriend and his actions. This creates a direct focus for the viewer and the focus is immediately drawn to her figure. This then causes the viewer to pay close attention to the lyrics she is singing. Next, the couple is shown in their bedroom which appears to be quite plain and simple. This is intentional for the purpose of not creating possible distractions for what is really happening in the scene. It is important to focus on the couples’ actions instead of embellishing details. When the girl accepts her boyfriend’s abuse and lets her guard down, it shows she is weak and lacks self-confidence. After each time she shows this weakness, the scene switches to Rihanna. Whenever the guy is in control and controlling the relationship, the camera switches to Eminem. This shows the dominance he has over her in their relationship and how each time he continues to get his way. The girl is exemplified as being inferior to the guy and this can be interpreted through the cuts back and forth to Rihanna and Eminem. The use of the perspective and eye-lines contribute to the overall interpretation of the unequal balance of power in domestic relationships.

Overall, “Love the Way You Lie” is a visual text which is portrayed through various techniques and elements which help to contribute to the meaning of the video. This video has a greater impact on the audience through the use of these influential celebrities to relay the meaning behind its message. The use of the visual motif and the symbolism throughout show the importance of the domestic violence, which is an issue throughout the world. This leads to my final interpretation that “Love the Way You Lie” is a visual image that speaks through its use of symbolism, motifs, color, form, perspective and form.
