The song “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele is very well known across the globe. Her music video as well but there is more to the video then one gets at first glance. The video begins the way it does for certain reasons and continues on with segments for reasons as well. The music video is trying to tell the story of Adele and how she felt at the time when she wrote the song. Everything that occurs during the video is how Adele felt at the time and the music video shows represents that. To understand the meaning behind the song, the video has a couple of scenes and items that represent her feelings and the lyrics. Instead of letting go of the anger Adele felt she took her time in letting it go and thinking about it. Throughout the video there are scenes that are presented a certain way, such as the space, the camera, the colors used all are presented to convey Adele’s angry message and how she is letting it go. The music video takes place inside Adele’s mind to convey everything going with her thoughts caused by her feelings.

The music video begins with Adele sitting in a chair in an almost empty room and then it moves to someone in another room, a white room. This is opening up into Adele’s mind. At first you see Adele sitting, as she is thinking and about to start telling a story. When the camera moves to the other room one sees someone standing holding some sort of item. As the video progressed one makes out the item to be a sword and the person holding it seems to be a warrior. This warrior is Adele as the fighter. Slowly the warrior starts to pull out the sword and scrapes it across the floor of the room. In this room, there is a light emitting from the outside that is white. The light is sort of like the “light at the end of the tunnel.” The warrior begins scraping the floor and does a circle light motion as she does this. As scenes go by the warrior is fighting the floor with her sword throwing some sort of powder across the room and around her. In one scene, all one can see is white powder and then a flash of the warrior as she dances. To make it seem as if she is losing herself in this anger because she wants to and she enjoys it. As the warrior continues to throw around the powder with her sword the camera zooms in and out. It zooms in when she is dancing and zooms out when it wants to show the room, which is the space she has that finally lets her express herself. Zooming out to show the room as a whole, while the light is still there but showing that the fighter has no intention of paying attention to this light. That is due to her wanting to keep this anger until she feels ready to let it go and forget about her partner.

Another scene that is key is where there is a pile of glass plates and plates being thrown into floor. The first time the broken plates and cups are shown the camera is zoomed in to show them on the ground all broken and piled up. Instead of zooming out, the camera zoomed in more and more to the pile and then it moves on to another scene. The next scene is Adele sitting singing again. Now the second time the pile of broken items is shown it beings outside of the room and zooms into the room. At this moment one sees the stairs, a projector-like wall, and florescent lamps. Showing the broken glasses is to depict the anger built up inside of her and how she is getting rid of it by throwing items. The projector-like wall is keeping the glass from going to another area instead of the pile, so that one understands this anger is towards one specific person. It also signifies how she is becoming steady. The florescent lamp is important because of the color it is and why it was put there. In the scene, the lamp is red thus signifying love, strength, and anger. Another florescent lamp is also shown and this one is connected the projector. Instead this lamp is white, which signifies a new beginning and finding light per say. Adele has found herself and is starting a new beginning without the person that has cause her this anger and pain she is feeling. There is a rope that connects the red florescent lamp to the projector and the white fluorescent lamp indicating that this is all connected. The rope also connects to a closed door behind the projector which indicates that door is a new beginning, opening up a new opportunity per say. There are more scenes in which the florescent lamp, projector, and glass are zoomed into. This is done purposely to show the symbolism between the items and what Adele is trying to say about how she felt with this relationship but how she does not care about it anymore. After when the glass is shown to be thrown again it is in the zoomed out position from the other room.

A scene that is shown multiple times with different things occurring is the one containing blocks on a table. This occurs in another room than all other scenes, showing how inside of Adele’s mind she is thinking about this. The first time this is shown one only sees the end of the white table with a couple of white blocks and sparks flying. This scene is somehow like a foreshadow of what will happen to it and it being destroyed by sparks. In this case, they are white to signify completion and light at the end of a table instead of tunnel. In the next instance one sees the blocks it is in a zoomed out position that shows what the blocks truly are, a city. During this scene, the lyrics are talking about how Adele and her partner thought they would have everything they wanted. This city made of bocks is showing the dreams and everything they wanted to build together. Blocks are used to represent steps, fights, or even everything that happened between them. Above the table and block are ropes being connected by walls and something is hanging from them. There are a couple of times where again the use of zooming into items to show the symbolism occur using the blocks. When Adele mentions how they wished to have it all the camera is zoomed into the blocks and moves through slowly. To show how each block is a slow progress of what the couple wanted and how they were going to work through it. After this when the city is shown again, one realizes that what was hanging from the ropes were something that started sparks above the city. The sparks are used to represent what was once a relationship between Adele and her partner. Now that the sparks are destroying the city it is representing how everything is over. Also, how she does not need this partner who caused her pain and anger to have what she wants anymore. The background in this scene is black and all you can see is the city, sparks, and table. There is no longer a room just darkness but the sparks bring light. These sparks are the symbol of a new beginning as they burn down old and unwanted pain and dreams. In this darkness, you can see the white purity and light. The next scenes show the blocks being destroyed and burning away slowly as the sparks bring a white light. Obviously showing finding a new light and finding herself completely thus not needing someone such as the partner who hurt her. She also burns this down because she does not care about it anymore. She does not care about the partner and she wants it to be clear this is an insult to him. She has burnt down everything they had together and dreamed about.

Throughout the video, Adele sits on her chair the whole time. Doing this she is showing she does not care enough to get up to express her anger. Instead Adele will let the viewer go deep into her mind to show what she is truly thinking because of her feelings. The use of glass, blocks, lamps, and fire are all done on purpose to represent what she is saying. She talks about how she was rolled deep with this person and that is also why the video is a depiction of her mind, deep in her mind and soul. Roll deep means to have someone that you know you can always count on and will be there for you. The way the video scenes are presented depict the anger Adele felt and how in her mind she played out the anger towards her significant other. Her anger is conveyed throughout the video and as it progresses one sees how the man she loved affected her.
