When reading the title “Joyas Volardores” it can be assumed the reading is about some sort of Spanish conquistador. So, when the very first line considers a humming bird it could easily be seen as a surprise. However, by being different from what the reader had expected the reading grabs the audience’s attention right from the very beginning. The next couple of lines then elaborates upon the title of the reading by explaining how the (white men) Spaniards that had arrived called these humming birds flying jewels. They had not yet experienced such a small, but majestic bird as they were native to only America. Yet these men had found a connection with the bird correlating it all the way to a jewel. How could a connection be found between these men and the tiny birds that they had just met? Doyle’s literature is actually about how every creature is able to connect or have feelings for one another no matter what they are.

The reading goes into very deep analysis of the humming bird. It begins to tell of the amazing feats that the humming bird is able to accomplish. For instance, the humming bird can fly up to sixty miles an hour! They can even fly backwards, as well as fly over five-hundred miles without pausing for a rest. Those amazing things are only capable to these unique birds; Why might Doyle do tell of such facts? Well who do you think took notice of these facts? Us humans became captivated by the little creature. We marveled at its abilities and in turn went and deeply observed them. Which often leads to a closeness that comes about being around someone or something for so long. So “Joyas Volardores” works to get the reader closer to the bird by telling of all the amazing things it can do. It is like a man being caught up in a women’s features and being captured in these features.

When the humming birds stop doing activities though, their heart rates slow to almost a halt. If they do not reengage themselves in time, then they will die. It is something of a curse that comes with the blessings of their amazing feats. Due to this harsh lifestyle the hummingbirds have lesser lifespans than the average beings. Despite the fact that they have hearts that are oh so similar to us humans. Imagine being born on September 5, 2016 and dying on September 8, 2016! Here the reading also brings the readers closer by making them feel bad for the birds. Think of how a person feels for a cute dog that is aging, and seems to need to be put down. The person treats the dog better, and attempts to make it as happy as possible before it is put down. Like the hummingbird, dogs also have shorter lifespans than us humans. It is always a sad moment to have to say goodbye to an animal you’ve become so close they’re like family.

After telling of the marvels of hummingbirds the reading goes on to relate all other kinds of animals, etc. It tells of how each creature has about two billion heartbeats in their lifetime! However, one can choose to use them all up like the hummingbird or save them like a tortoise. Which may seem like a better alternative is up to the one living it and how they want to live it. I know for a fact I personally would not be able to sit around doing nothing all day or move as slow as molasses. This here is Doyle taking into account not only the different kinds of creatures, but also the different lifestyles that they could be living. Yet they all have a heart within themselves that is able to connect to a heart of any other kind.

This has all creatures facing the tough decision to make in terms of short vs long life (which can also be viewed as the different lifestyles that they choose to live). Another aspect the reading brings out to the reader is the blue whale and its heart. It has the biggest heart in the world according to the reading. So big in fact that little children could go inside of the animal’s heart and play around through it! The whale is said to grow two-hundred pounds a day! It grows for about eight years before it disappears from humans delving deep into the waters of the ocean. However, humans have been able to know about their existence from their loud piercing cries that travel long distances in the water. These cries resonate with humans as if they were hearing the cries of a baby. We are hardwired to notice these cries and feel these feelings. It is another way to show how creatures find their hearts connected.

So, the main message of the whole reading kind of ends with how all of us creatures are able to connect yet be so different in types, lifestyles, sizes, and much more. It tells of the different hearts that each creature has, but how each heart can form a bond with any other kind. Never to make physical contact with another heart. Yet each creature has been known to make mental or spiritual connections with their hearts. With the example being of a father cooking pancakes for his children and wife to show how he cares. Or a man feeling sadness for an exemplary bird that doesn’t have much time to live its life.
