Images have been used for various reasons throughout history. Movie posters are created to intrigue and entice the would be viewer to pay for a visual art. The posters can be used to display the emotion of the central figure and the overall genre of the movie. The poster that I am using for my reading is a mystery for me but I know the director has a history of violent movies. The image of Uma Thurman on the Pulp Fiction poster has very vintage look. The creator of this poster depicts a book that is worn from wear and tear. The borders of the picture contain many wrinkles and as if it has been the property of quite a few people. It resembles a B - Movie that has been thrown in a retail store movie bargain bin. Even though the cover has a worn out look, Uma has the look of power, confidence and authority and lets the viewer know that she will have a major part of the plot.

Some of the elements that are very noticeable would provide a bit of nostalgia for older movie goers. That targeted audience would get flashbacks of days reading mystery and suspense books. It has pretty simple color blocks with an interesting choice of font that resembles a paint brush. The price of the book is displayed to also look vintage. Even the choice of cigarette being a filter-less Lucky Strike says old school. Lastly the book she is reading is vintage. Those elements would evoke more emotion for people that were teens to young adults of that era. Arts and styles have a way of coming back in style and retro is always considered cool.

A change that I could see take place is her holding the pistol in a manner that would show her having more dominance. Instead of laying down on the bed she could be peeping through a cracked door with the camera pointed up at an angle. As is, Uma looks like she still yields power and influence over most of the other characters in the movie. The shiny chrome pistol also portrays power and that she is not a weak person. Also that in her world she has to always be on guard from other criminals or law enforcement. She could be a Bonnie like character and could be looking at her Clyde through the corner of her eye.

The colors of the cover art have some significant meaning. For example, the color red could let the viewer know that there is violence in the movie. The color yellow means caution because this movie displays unsuitable content for minors. She is draped in black attire which has been characterized by villains. The way she is laying down and the design of the shirt shows a bit of cleavage to show her sexiness. The bright red lipstick and nails also give her sex appeal and brings out her femininity. She has a look of naughtiness that would attract the male audience. Having a female shown in such a dominant way would also attract the female audience. The way her hand is positioned on the book as if someone that is familiar to her has walked in. She lays the book down to give this person her attention or displaying a look of irritation. This picture has all the classic elements of a crime novel. It leaves the person looking at the picture wandering if she will be the heroine or the antagonist. Out of all the characters portrayed in the movie it is only her that is displayed reading a book that is probably pulp fiction.

The book that this character is reading is called Harlot in the Heart. A harlot is someone that is promiscuous or a prostitute. This is old world terminology for a woman that has this type of description and fits in the retro theme of this poster. The older generation would immediately pick up on the word harlot as it was common verbiage used in the mid 1900’s. The lady on the cover is displayed in red lingerie and leaning back holding onto her lover, engaged in a kiss. I am thinking that this could signify that her character will have an affair at some point of the movie. That no matter what the harlot could never settle down in a committed relationship. It could also mean that she could have a problem being faithful. The title of the book seems pretty oppressive to women and displays the double standard between men. A woman that is promiscuous is shown in a negative way while the promiscuous man is the envy of his friends. The novel Harlot in the Heart was probably filled with love, romance and heartbreak. This could also foretell what her character will endure in the movie.

The movie poster for Pulp Fiction shows a woman that is sexy, confident and mysterious. The retro theme shown was a neat touch that could connect with older viewers. While the look of her character would appeal to the younger males. His previous work was listed on the poster so fans of those movies would have an immediate connection. Overall I think that the picture works in giving viewers that pay close attention to the presentation, a view of what is to come.
