A dystopian society is described as “a society characterized by human misery” (Dictionary.com). Although many people think of dystopias as fictional places there are many places on earth that serve as perfect examples of these societies. Isis territory in the Middle East is a perfect example of an exploited miserable place. The movie Mad Max: Fury Road is a movie about a dystopian society that has many similarities to the Isis camps in the middle east. In the movie, the main character Max has no other option but to fight for what he believes in and free the people of Citadel from their terrible ruler. In today’s world, many people flee from Isis camps instead of fighting for their people, which in return makes the issue even worse than before. By looking at the solution of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road and comparing it to the similar dystopian lifestyle of Isis camps, we can see that the only real solution is to fix the problem internally, rather than run from it. The similarities between Isis camps and the people of Citadel, in regards to how they are treated, go on and on. After analyzing the two societies the dystopian society of Citadel doesn’t seem so fictional after all.

The first thing that stands out is the treatment of women. In the movie, the women aren’t treated as citizens at all but as sex slaves for breeding more children. The leader, Immortan Joe, has five wives that carry children for him constantly to keep building his lineage and army. The women in the movie are told what to wear and what they can do, which is almost nothing but breed children. The Isis camps are not much different at all from this fictional society. Women aren’t treated at all like equals and are told exactly what to wear and what they can and cannot do. Children are ripped from their families and forced into the army if they are boys or treated as sex slaves if they are girls. This is a direct correlation between the movie and the reality of Isis camps. The new born children have no experience besides their reality so they think that it is the social norm to be ruthless killers or sex slaves.

Since the children that have been taken by Isis compassion have never been shown they don’t know how to exude compassion themselves, which in return, creates war robots that don’t know anything else besides killing. This is very similar to what happens in the movie. Children are taken from a young age and they have skulls painted on their face. From day one of their life they are shown how to be killers with total servitude towards their leader and no morality what so ever.
