The image titled “Light at the End” sparks a message of hope and clarity on the human journey as a whole. Captured by Elena Bobrova in an Indonesian cave this picture was perfectly timed and composed to capture the National Geographic explorers on their mission to chart this mysterious cave. The light is captured so brilliantly that it was even referred to as the Light of Heaven by many artists (Kreefe). Through the placement of the light beam, the contrast from dark to light in the image, and the composition of the size of different objects Elena Bobrova emphasizes the spiritual journey most people have in life. She leaves the viewer of the image with a sense of optimism for their future and for the world as a whole’s future.

The light beam is the most important part of the image because it is first spot where the eye travels. This is relevant because this type of white light is indicative of heaven or a type of sanctuary after death. The photographer is trying to encapsulate the four climbers within this beam. This is significant because their journey as human beings is part of a larger more spiritual journey that they are on. The photographer emphasizes this point by making sure the light extends from an unforeseen distance above the people. This is done because heaven is referred to as a place above with no physical distance set. By having the light come from an unknown distance away makes the light seem like it comes from heaven. Bobrova does this in order to reiterate that all humans are influenced by this higher power from above. The fact that all of the humans in the picture are contained within the light illustrates that every person is affected by this heavenly being. The light beam shows the spiritual journey that humans take by placing them firmly within the grips of a higher power.

Elena Bobrova makes use of the contrast from light to dark by placing the humans in the lighter portion of the image in disparity with the darker portion on the bottom of the image. This is important because she emphasizes that no matter what is around you in life that you are always being looked out for by a higher power on a spiritual journey. Since it appears that the explorers are traveling from bottom to top on the picture it shows that this spiritual journey will always be accompanying you even in some rougher areas. Bobrova emphasizes this by making sure the area that the humans are traveling from (the bottom) is rocky and dark. Both of these characteristics of their past experiences are ones that many people describe going through on their own spiritual journey. The hope in the photographer’s message is shown through a progressively lighter image from bottom to top. This is important because Bobrova is trying to show that life and the spiritual journey people take will get better. Within the light beam itself the explorers are contrasted as dark against the beam. This is important because it shows that their journey is again much more about a higher power than themselves. The light and dark juxtaposed against each other emphasize how the spiritual journey’s that humans have aren’t always easy but maintaining hope will ensure that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is shown by Bobrova’s placement of the light after the darkness of their journey.

The main element of composition within this photograph is the relative size of the humans in relation to the nature surrounding them. This is important because it again reiterates that humans are on a journey with an outside presence not alone. By placing them as significantly smaller than the nature surrounding them proves Bobrova’s point that although humans think that they are battling alone, they are not, instead they have outside help from a spiritual place. Also, by placing the humans in the center of the image but reducing their size she emphasizes how humans are ants compared to nature. Bobrova places rocks of all shapes and sizes around the humans as they stand in the center of the image. This is important because it emphasizes how much else is out there. It is metaphoric to daily struggles in life that affect a person’s spiritual journey, some struggles are big and some small but they are all around us. This portion of the composition of the image gives hope to a viewer that no matter what else is around them they are always traveling within their own spiritual journey that will help them grow and be safe.

The second point Bobrova is trying to make with the composition is one of complete optimism through the large and openness of nature around the humans. She is proving that no mistake or decision should be dwelled on for too long by showing how much more is going on in the world other than one’s own journey. Despite being located at the center of the image they are hardly the focus of the image. This emphasizes Bobrova’s point that humans are not in control of their spiritual journey and are actually just a piece to the very large puzzle. This is important because any trouble that they are worrying about at this point is actually miniscule compared to the scope of nature around them. That is exactly what the spiritual journey that Bobrova is pointing out means. She points out the expansive nature of the cave to illustrate the need to trust the rest of the world around us because it is clearly much bigger than one person’s journey. This is so important because it gives a lot of hope to any viewer of this picture that they can turn their life around and be in a better place by trusting their own journey and everything around it. The rocks and cliffs surrounding the explorers do not matter on their journey because they are controlling what they can and allowing the higher powers put them where they need to be. This uplifting message is the central point of this paper and achieved through this placement of human beings in relation to their nature counter parts.

“Light at the End” is a brilliantly composed picture that gives any viewer of the image a sense of positivity about their future and their journey here on earth. By highlighting the fascinating light beam, the variation between light and dark, and the configuration of the size of different portions of the image Elena Bobrova stresses the importance of a spiritual journey that most people take on earth. By emphasizing these things, she leaves the viewer with an appreciation for the growth and power that an unseen power can have on someone.
