Ray Bradbury’s entire ironic message in The Last Night of the World can be summed up by analyzing the last seven lines of dialogue. In the short story about a supposed doomsday, Bradbury makes his characters conduct their last day in the most normal way possible. When he juxtaposes this routine lifestyle with the impending end of the world it creates an ironic mood for which he creates his argument. Through the use of laughter and humor contrasted with the tension of the world ending, the irony of everyday tasks in the face of death, and the short and sparse dialogue; Bradbury illustrates how that once his characters accepted their fate they were able to live out their day carefree. This gives the impression to a reader that ignorance is truly bliss and that to worry about anything, even the world ending, is a detriment to how you live your life.

By using humor and laughter often Bradbury creates quite a contrast to the dreary end that his characters are about to face. The quick exchange in bed before they sleep for the final time is “She laughed with him, knowing what it was that she had done that was funny” (Bradbury). This laughter is important because it is the most opposite emotion of death. This contrast is useful to show how peaceful the characters are. By accepting their upcoming death, the husband and wife are able to show emotions not normally known to people in their situation. The laughter in this line is also directed at each other instead of an outside force or object. This is important because Bradbury is emphasizing how comfortable the husband and wife are with their position. The married couple are clearly pleasant in their lives to be able to accept a joke about a recent action. There is also a tension created by the stark contrast between laughter and death that must be answered as the reader wonders how the characters will keep acting so normally as their time runs out. The comedic action of: “"I left the water running in the sink," she said” (Bradbury) serves as a way to relieve this tension in the scene as well as the entire short story. This is important because it puts the characters in a relaxed state even at the end of the story. Because their time on earth was running out through the entire story there was question in a reader’s mind on how it would end peacefully. These few lines of humor serve a purpose to relieve any tension about whether the story would end violently. Bradbury takes the focus away from death and into humor at this crucial time in the story to direct his readers to his main argument which is that this story was never about death or what was going to happen to his characters. By shifting the focus to humor at the very end shows that it was actually about how to deal with adversity by ignoring the outside factors.

Bradbury highlights many of the everyday tasks that the characters complete in order to show how unaffected they were by the imminent end of the world. This is important because it shows that by not being taken over by fear of the future the husband and wife in The Last Night of the World were able to function well and live a normal last day. The last mundane action they take is when “He heard her get out of bed and go into the kitchen. A moment later, she returned. "I left the water running in the sink," she said.” (Bradbury). This action is important because it is one that under normal circumstances would be completely necessary and important but in this instance is not really necessary to complete. However, the husband and wife choose to live their day as simply as possible in order to take their mind off the future. If they picked activities that were adventurous or bucket list items, it would be certainly more fun, but would also be so out of the ordinary that it would remind them of the grim future they face. This routine task has kept the wife’s attention focused on something other than the terrible end that she and her husband believe that they are facing. The carefree mood of the characters here, shown through their desire to complete all normal chores, proves Bradbury’s point that by ignoring the negatives and future struggles one can live peacefully without worry.

Bradbury purposefully limits dialogue between characters in order to ultimately show the acceptance of their fate. “"Good night," he said, after a moment” (Bradbury) is the final and only line spoken between the husband and wife before their last sleep together. Lack of dialogue indicates that words in this scene are not needed to understand what they face. This is because the specific hardship that they are facing is death. Death is imminent and leaves them with no future to discuss unlike other solvable problems. In their minds they have come to the conclusion that they have no ability to change their position thus limiting their conversations to short interactions. This is important because it reiterates that all along they were not ignorant about their fate, instead they chose to face their day with conviction about their ensuing demise. This final scene gives meaning to their entire day by clarifying their willingness to make it as normal as possible. The lack of dialogue emphasizes their commitment to live their life on their own terms without allowing fear to overtake them. They are able to do this by first accepting what will come but then relying on Bradbury’s message to only focus on what you can control once they realize their situation completely. There were certainly outside factors on the character’s minds but they chose to prioritize their peace of mind and happiness over something they could not change.

In the final seven lines of the short story: The Last Night of the World, Ray Bradbury uses comedic relief in contrary to the impending end of the world, the satire of completing routine tasks in the face of the world ending, and ultimately brief dialogues between the main characters the husband and wife to show that how by accepting their fate as quickly as they could they were able to live out their last day in harmony. This message conveys a message of hope to the reader that no matter what is upcoming in their life focus on the things that you personally can control and everything will work out. These final lines are the most important for the story and give meaning to a short story that leaves a reader questioning what the real message of the tale is until the very end.
