9/11 is one of the most well-known and awful disasters that has happened in the recent history of the United States. Most thoughts and opinions about the day are negative and obviously that is justified. However, even throughout all the bad, there are still some good things that came from it. The country really came together for a common cause, which is rare. It is important to remember that there are always good things that can come from any situation. This photo shows that even in something as dreadful as 9/11, there are still bright spots and hope that can come from it.

The first emotion that most people would feel looking at this picture for the first time is sadness. It is hard to be reminded of this event and not feel negative emotions. This picture does have some hopeful elements within it, however. There are three main elements to the picture: the firefighters, the flagpole, and then the background. The background of the photo is completely gray. This makes it clear that this picture was taken right after the towers crashed. There appears to still be dust in the air, and the firefighters are covered in dust. The background also is pretty blurry. Despite it being obvious that the background is the remains of the twin towers, is it difficult to make out close details. There is even one section in the bottom right corner of the picture that is just gray with no details at all. This could be because of something in the way of the camera or picture, or it could be that it was just too dusty outside. The person who took this picture most likely did this on purpose to show what the important part of the picture is. The background might be blurred out because the cameraman is trying to show that despite the twin towers crashing being an important part, it is not what the people should be focused on. It is most likely blurred out on purpose so that the person looking at the picture will focus on the foreground. The foreground shows a more hopeful and positive image.

Another major element of this picture are the three firefighters and their body language and facial expressions. All three of them look absolutely exhausted, which makes sense because they would have been working very hard all day outside. This is also most likely the end of the day because raising a flag seems like something a person would do after they had accomplished something, not in the middle of it. Also, two of them have their jackets completely off which can be a sign that they are hot from doing so much work. They clearly have been doing a lot that day because they are completely covered with dust and dirt. Their facial expressions also show a tremendous amount of grief. This adds even more emphasis to how bad the even was. The facial expressions are a very important part of the picture and the cameraman does a great job of capturing the reactions. There is almost an aspect of disbelief to their expressions which makes sense. It is clear that the firefighters are fighting through a great amount of physical and emotional pain. It would be bad enough to hear that the two building had crashed and many people had died. However, these firefighters had to put those emotions away as much as they could and go to work. Their facial expressions show the toll that they day had put on them. However, they are still going strong and putting the flag up. This is a good example for people who might be really upset about 9/11. Obviously it is a terrible thing and deserves to be grieved about, but people still need to fight through it like the firefighters did.

The most important aspect of this photo is the American flag. Two major things stand out about the flag that show how it is a sign of hope. First, the flag is extremely bright compared to the rest of the photo. The red, white, and blue really pop out of the colorless background. This makes the viewer focus more on the flag because it really is the only thing in the picture that has color besides a few yellow stripes on the firefighter’ uniform. It is also significant that the flag is in the middle of the picture. This shows that America is the most important part of whole situation. The firefighters holding up the American flag shows that even though the terrorists tried to destroy us, America still stands strong after something so catastrophic. This is significant because it shows that people need to lift up those who are going through a tough time, whether that is during 9/11, or just in everyday matters.

In conclusion, this photo is a great example of someone looking at something that would ordinarily because a horrible situation and trying to make the best out of it. 9/11 was a terrible event; there is no arguing that. However, this picture shows that there can still be good that comes out of any situation, you just have to be willing to see the good in things. It is a good lesson for all types of bad situations, no matter what it is. Anyone looking at this photo, and the event, can learn from destruction. Many things appear to be terrible when they are happening, but in reality, it is impossible to know if something is good or bad right away. Something that starts off to be bad, like 9/11, can often have many good things come from it. The person just has to be able to look at it in a new light.
