In the short story “The Last Night of the World”, death is a something that is not to be feared, as it rapidly approaches the characters remain steady and calm. The way Ray Bradbury uses tone, conversation, and metaphors in this short story are significant because it portrays the melancholic peacefulness that comes with the end of the world. These methods help the author show the stability and satisfaction that comes when one leads a life that they can be proud of, a life that does not have to change when something as drastic as the end of the world occurs.

The author uses language and conversation between the husband and wife to accentuates that despite the confusion, there is gratefulness towards one another and sadness, but not for themselves, for each other. The woman says, “I don’t think I understand." (Bradbury 17), this is to be expected, seeing as this truly is an abnormal circumstance. It is the in the husband’s reply, though, that is more important. He says, “…I didn’t say anything to you. It first happened about four nights ago." (Bradbury 20). The response goes to show his hopefulness that he can still shield his loved ones from something that he has no control over. It almost seems as though he had hoped his dream meant nothing, but after speaking to Stan and others at the office, it became apparent that was not the case. His first thought was to shield his family, it shows how much the husband cares for his family, that he wanted to protect them and internalized the fear he most likely felt at first. There is definitely a piece of him that wants his dream to have been merely a dream, but after speaking about it to his wife, they are both able to recognize the logical aspect of the world’s end. When they both agree on this, a small weight is lifted from the reader’s chest knowing that the characters are able to accept what they cannot understand.

The use of the metaphor, “…But just, let’s say, the closing of a book.” (Bradbury 16), is one of the most important lines in the story. This line in particular holds everything Ray Bradbury meant to get across to his readers through the text. The author wants his readers to realize this family had lived their lives to the best of their ability. They were good people, they were not activists or set on changing the world, but they maintained a quiet, happy life. The characters found satisfaction in their humble lives and therefore were able to accept the end of the world. The end of a story doesn’t come all at once; a good end to a story dwindles down from its dramatic climax, and from there it starts to slow, it starts to solve and explain itself to the readers. It’s supposed to make sense, it’s not abrupt and it does not leave readers searching for answers they will never have. When a series comes to a close, the readers are satisfied with the end of the novel, and even if they aren’t, the ending is still distinct. When someone finishes a book they love, there tends to be an ache but for the most part the reader is content, there is no extreme sadness, anger, or anxiety. For the characters in this story, there is no fear, anger, or despair. Despite the heavy circumstances the world’s population must face, there isn’t a desperate search for answers or a way to escape their fate. It is an end to a story. There is satisfaction instead of desperation, and the characters are content to simply put their children to bed. They let themselves and their family slip into the closing of their book. There is a sense of finality, but also a sense of peacefulness. They accept the things they cannot change and they are content with the routine of their lives. Though they didn’t actively try to better the world or the human race, they themselves refrained from participating in the atrocities of mankind that are referenced in the text. The purpose of the end of a story is to resolve matters, to clear up any confusion or unresolved issues for the reader. The characters in this story deem their lives acceptable enough to have nothing to fix or make up for in order for them to leave this world content with the way they lived it. Instead of viewing what should be seen as a tragedy, the characters in the text merely see it as the closing of a book.

This short story has a powerful, gloomy tone set to it. Despite this, the underlying tone that is buried deep within the text is peaceful, serene almost. The melancholic placidness that translates throughout the entire story is especially evident in the quote, “…But just, let’s say, the closing of a book.” (Bradbury 16). This line in particular is like an anchor, the sad statement that’s said in such a definite, and almost nonchalant way, is sobering to the reader because the characters do not react in the way the reader expects, or even wants them to. To the reader, this story is full of confusion and uncertainty, it’s enough to make the reader desperate seeing the lack of reaction from the characters as they talk so casually about their inevitable death. The line brings the readers down to reality, back down to earth and makes them think about what they would do if it was their last night, if they knew the world was about to end. When the husband says, “…Sometimes it frightens me; sometimes I’m not frightened at all but at peace” (Bradbury 18), it emphasizes the authors main point that despite the circumstances, the characters were still able to live a life they were proud of. The people who are the focus of this short story lived a life with no regrets. They had a home, a family, love, and happiness in their life. In a story where the end is inevitable, where the world knows that their demise is approaching, it’s remarkable that all they truly want to do on their last night of the world is to spend it at home with their family. They continued to do the things they do every other night, and that’s more than enough for them.

The main characters in this text lived a life that they were proud of, they had no regrets and no lifelong dreams that would never be fulfilled. They spent their last day as they spent all the days before that and were perfectly content to do so. Despite the tragic ending that looms over the reader’s head, the end provides an eerie satisfaction knowing that the characters will go peacefully in their sleep. This work of literature inspires the readers to live every day in a way that makes them happy, so that way if the world is ending one can say they lived their lives in the best way they knew how.
