A hundred years ago, lots people from Hong Kong started to immigrate to United State and other foreign countries in lots of ways. Meanwhile, there was a group population becoming more and more strong, it called American born Chinese. The author of “Mother Tongue” Amy Tan is growing up as a American born Chinese. And there are lots of factors that cause Amy Tan to write this paper “Mother Tongue,” firstly, growing up with a multi-cultural family, secondly, experiencing the historical moment, the most importantly, influencing by the relationship between Amy and her mom. In the result of all these reasons explain what Amy and her mother were experiencing and why Amy Tan is writing the article “Mother Tongue”.

To begin with, who is Amy Tan, a Chinese immigrant from Oakland, she was born in United State, and grew up as a normal American kid. However, she was experiencing a lot of things that American kid did not experience with their American family. For example, Amy mentioned in the text, “Not waste money that way,” this is a sentence with an obvious grammar mistake. Amy is a writer, she is sensitive with grammar mistake for sure, but she was saying it nature with her husband, which is the habit she developed from she was a child with her mom. Therefore, she combined two different ways of thinking and speaking from Chinese and English. Amy is the second generation from Chinese immigrant family, who is luckily learn how to speak and think in a multi-language way. There is a research talk about the differences between American and Chinese, “Research has shown that American typically are more emotionally expressive than Chinese,” (Wang) but, Amy is not a typical American or a typical Chinese, she is not so emotionally normal time, but she can get emotional when she in the situation. On the other hand, this entire second immigrant generation were changed from who they should be from the time their parents decided to come to another country. However, these second generation did a great job on expressing their talent on all different paths, for example, Amy used her life experiences to wrote a book and she made a huge success on that, the book is called “The Joy Luck Club,” this book even became a movie couple year later after published. If people have read this book, they will know this book is talking about few family’ experiences during one hundred war time. Amy used four different females to demonstrate the hidden level between man and women, and these women’ metamorphosis is the result of the huge distinction between eastern culture and western culture.

After talking about Amy’ traits of character, we need to see what historical event happened to Amy Tan and how it influences the article “Mother Tongue”. Amy was born in 1952 in LA, meanwhile, China is just established at the second year. During the beginning of 19 centuries, China was experiencing more than 15 years of cruel War of Resistance against Japan and 10 years Civil War, China had such a hard time to develop. It is the same time the world begin to understand China this country. In the 1940s, that is the time Chinese are facing the hardest course, a study discussed about what Chinese people were experiencing during that time, “Regulations on Handing Traitors Cases, issued on November, 23, 1945,” (Feng) this new is a regulation that government were putting the guilt on people who is betrayal of our country. Therefore, it is a crazy period for Chinese, lots of people were caught and gave a death penalty. Chinese is full of pressure and fear at that time. Meanwhile, more and more people were thinking to escape all the troubles in China and went aboard. Amy was growing up with all this background, she had her own perspective on China’ government. Besides, Ten Years Revolution happened in China while Amy was going to school. People were even punishing the people who is well-educated, who is adoring the western culture and so on. Amy and her mom is luckily escape from this issue, which is directly effecting that if Amy can become an author or not. Amy was growing up with all these serious historical issues, she had to more strong willingness of the need of the peace and freedom compare to the children grew up in China. In a result, she created so many great articles, books that reflecting the real society and the freedom. At the end, readers will realize Amy is a successful and lucky woman, she could express her thinking through writing and no one is going to disturb her.

The last but not the least, the influence to Amy for her mother is the most important element to explain the article “Mother Tongue”. There is an article wrote by Wood Michelle Gaffner used to analyze Amy’ book “The Joy Luck Club,” “Daughter relationships in the United States and creates a so-called generation gap that the China-born mothers neither anticipate nor understand,” (Wood 1) This is the quote clearly illustrating the real relationship between Amy and her mom, or even most of the first immigrant generation and their children. Amy would always obey her mom, and she is not allowing to talk back to her mom. Which cultivated Amy to talk like her mom and behaviour like her mom. As time goes by, Amy found out she could express her feeling in her writing pieces. Amy is using another way to communicate with her mother, later, Amy were more willing to express what is happened to her mom and herself. That is the reason why Amy this text “Mother Tongue”. In the essay “Mother Tongue,” Amy talked about lots of stories from her mother. These stories were making Amy’ mother felt embarrassed cause she can’t speak fluent English. There is one time, Amy picks up the phone and talks for her mother, “This is Mrs. Tan,” (Tan Pg.344) Amy feels angry about the person who talks to her mom without respect. At the same time, this is not the first time that Amy helps her mom on the phone. There are more tough troubles that Amy was facing because her mother’ Broken English. However, readers still can feel the love from Amy toward her mom. Readers understood Amy more when they know her more from her writings.

At the end, among all the factors from Amy, “Mother Tongue” has demonstrated a great sense of love from a daughter. Which are all connections between different elements to analysis the prove why Amy was writing the essay “Mother Tongue”. As a reader, I believed there will not have another person can write out this text other than Amy Tan. Amy is the example of second immigrant generation of American born Chinese. On the other hand, China is experiencing the craziest year for establishing. For Amy, it is hard to growing up in a single parent family, and facing lots of troubles with her mother because her mother’ broken English. However, I think these are all gifts for Amy, who can be successful is only because everything that she has been through.
