There are numberless people try to immigrate to other countries. A hundred years ago, lots people from Hong Kong and South China started to immigrate to United State or other foreign countries in all different kinds of way. Meanwhile, there was a group population becoming more and more strong, it called American born Chinese. Amy Tan is a female who grow up in that group. And there are lots of factors that cause Amy Tan to write this paper “Mother Tongue,” firstly, growing up with a multi-cultural environment, secondly, changing with historical moment, the most importantly, influencing by the relationship between Amy and her mom. In the result of all these reasons explain what Amy and her mother were experiencing and why is that happened on them.

To begin with, who is Amy Tan, a Chinese immigrant from Oakland, she was born in United State, and grew up as a normal American kid. However, she was experiencing a lot of things that American kid did not experience with her “unique” family. For example, Amy mentioned in the text, “Not waste money that way,” this is a sentence with an obvious gramma mistake, she is a writer, she is sensitive with gramma for sure, but she was saying it nature with her husband, which is the habit she developed from she was a child with her mom. Therefore, she combined two different ways of thinking and speaking from Chinese and English. Amy is the second generation from Chinese immigrant family, who is luckily learn how to speak and think in a multi-language way. There is a research talk about the differences between American and Chinese, “Research has shown that American typically are more emotionally expressive than Chinese,” (Wang) but, Amy is not a typical American or a typical Chinese, she is not so emotionally normal time, but she can get really emotional when she in the situation. On the other hand, this entire second immigrant generation were changed from who they should be from the time their parents decided to come to another country. However, these second generation did a great job on expressing their talent on all different paths, for example, Amy used her life experiences to wrote a book and she made a huge success on that, the book is called “The Joy Luck Club,” this book even became a movie couple year later after published. If people have read this book, they will know this book is talking about few family’ experiences during one hundred war time period. Amy used four different females to demonstrate the hidden level between man and women, and these women’ metamorphosis is the result of the huge distinction between eastern culture and western culture.

After talking about Amy’ traits of character, we need to see what historical event happened with Amy Tan. Amy was born in 1952 in LA, there is one thing all the Chinese should know, China is established in 1949, during the beginning of 19 centuries, China was experiencing more than 15 years of cruel War of Resistance against Japan and 10 years Civil War, China had such a hard time to develop around the time it developing. In the 1940s, that is the time Chinese are facing the hardest course, a study discussed about what Chinese people were experiencing during that time, “Regulations on Handing Traitors Cases, issued on November, 23, 1945,” (Feng) this is only a title of a regulation which created by government at that time, most of people are confusing what this title means, this is a regulation government were putting the guilt on people who is betrayal of our country, therefore, it is a crazy time period for Chinese, lots of people were caught and gave a death penalty. Meanwhile, more and more people were thinking to escape all the mess in China and went aboard. Amy’ mom is one of these people, and after Amy was born, Ten Years Revolution happened in China, people were even punishing the people who is well-educated, who is adoring the western culture and etc. Amy’ mom was moving to Unite State around that time, which was directly effected by those historical events. Amy was growing up with this serious historical environment, she had to understand the important of the peace and freedom early compare to the children grew up in China. In a result, she created so many great articles, books that reflecting the real society and the freedom. At the end, readers would notice a writer was growing up with their own historical backgrounds, and their own historical backgrounds were always related to the environment that they grew up.

The last but not the least, the influence to Amy for her family is the most important element to explain the meaning of the text. Amy is the writer who is good at expressing her feeling with lots of detail descriptions, there is an article wrote by Wood Michelle Gaffner used to analyze Amy’ book “The Joy Luck Club,” “Daughter relationships in the United States and creates a so-called generation gap that the China-born mothers neither anticipate nor understand,” (Wood Pg. 1) This is the quote clearly illustrate the real relationship between Amy and her mom, or even most of the first immigrant generation and their children. So, Amy is a daughter who does not know how to communicate with her mom, she would always obey her mom, and stop talk back as a usual Chinese family, which created a thick gap between Amy and her mom. As time goes by, Amy found out she could express her feeling in her writing pieces, using another way, her mother’ behaviour effect Amy a lot, and help her to create a unique theme to describe their magical connection. later on, Amy were more willing to express her emotion into her writing, that is the cause of this essay “Mother Tongue” that she wrote. In the essay “Mother Tongue,” Amy talked about lots of stories from her mother. These stories were making Amy felt embarrassed, when she picked up the phone and talked as her mother, “This is Mrs. Tan,” (Tan Pg.344) Which is an unbelievable experience for Amy. At the same time, this is not the first time that Amy talk like that, there are more tough troubles that Amy was facing because her mother’ Broken English. However, readers can only feel the love from Amy toward her mom after I read through this article. People were understood Amy more when they know her more from her writings.

At the end, among all the factors from Amy Tan and historical events, the multi-culture she grew up, the unique historical background she had and the relationship with her mother. Which are all connections between these elements and the text and the prove why Amy was writing the essay “Mother Tongue.” As a reader, I believed there will not have another person can write out this text other than Amy Tan, who is a second immigrant generation of American from China, China is experiencing the most crazy year for establishing at the same time. Besides, growing up in a single parent family, and facing lots of troubles by her mother’ broken English. However, I think these are all gifts for Amy, who can be so successful after so much that she has been through. Amy Tan is a success example of an author who can demonstrate clearly of a truth after experienced all the historical events and issues.
