Since the turn of the century our planet has had to overcome many challenges whether it is global warfare, extreme poverty, or in this case Global Warming. Our planet has been around for a long time, and as a civilization we have had to adapt to sustain life here on Earth. With the growing number of the human population it has been hard to maintain a healthy environment while also controlling deforestation and avoiding global warming. Recently people from around the world have tried to inform the public on the growing issues that face our planet. The image that I have chosen to interpret is one that warns against deforestation and global warming. In the picture the ad agency tries to magnify the effects that humans have on the Earth, and they use this ad as their form of a warning. They want us to know that it is not too late to change our ways and our habits. They show us these concepts by using color, lining, spacing, and form. The techniques used in the picture helps illustrate their idea of the Earth decaying.

First we need to look at the focus point of this image. When we first look at the picture it is obvious that the author is trying to introduce the element of color by displaying green in the forest. With the reality that the green represents life and tranquility. At first the color is an easy thing to look over, but the ad agency tries to focus on that element rather than another one in the image. The green helps us visualize what the Earth should have been before humans helped ruin it. Also in the image there are two different shades of green, which I interpret as the dark green being the trees, but there are less trees in the picture. Meaning that we need to be careful about how we use them because eventually the agency is saying we may run out. Surrounding the dark trees is a lighter green which is represented as grass which there is more of than the trees. Speaking of color, the author also tries to illustrate part of the forest as brown to show death or decay. It’s his way of continuing to convey to us the idea that we are starting to affect the environment in a negative way. What is interesting about his use of green and brown is that even in the brown area, or the dead area there is still some green in it. Which can be interpreted by the agency that it’s not too late to change our habits. That even in death things can be regrown even better than before. I think this is one of the more important ideas illustrated in the picture. Continuing with the idea of color in the forest there is many different white lines between the two sets of forests. It can kind of symbolize veins in the human body going to the lungs. As humans we depend on oxygen to survive and live on this Earth. Trees help provide the oxygen in our environment, so the author is depicting that if we continue to destroy our forests, or ruin our climate that not only will we be destroying our planet, but we will also be destroying ourselves.

Secondly, the author uses a unique form to set up the image. He chooses to display the forest as if it is a pair of lungs. By doing this the author can continue to symbolize the forest as life. The lungs are what helps human’s breath and create oxygen without them we wouldn’t be able to survive. Putting the forest in the shape of the lungs shows us how fragile the entire system is. The creator behind this image also has implemented clouds into this picture. That can symbolize the growing pollution problem that our planet faces daily. Global warming is caused by the destruction of our ozone layer, and pollution is a big cause of that. The excess of carbon dioxide warms up the earth’s atmosphere which in turn can heat up the earth and hurt our environment. The author emphasizes this point because pollution can lead to the destruction of oxygen which can hurt our forest and us. In the image there isn’t much sunlight, which I interpret it as the author is trying to point out that with more pollution in the environment the less sunlight we will receive which can also lead to the harming of our forests. The ecosystems depend on constant sunlight to survive and grow.

Finally, one of the last elements the creator of this image uses is spacing and scaling. They use these elements in a big way because when they determine how big the picture is going to be they also need to decide what kind of view we will see it as. When you look at the spacing of this image it is a very specific view of the world. The author could of easily decided to view the earth as a whole. Meaning to make the picture a view of the entire world rather than just one forest like the agency did. By the agency doing this it makes the image feel more relatable, and realistic. If the agency decided to show us a picture showing the world view it wouldn’t make us think about it the same way. Everything in the picture appears to be super close together and the agency does this on purpose. They want us to feel like everything is connecting that every decision we make has a reaction to the all the parts in the ecosystem.

Overall this ad agency uses this photo to get a persuasive idea out to the general public. They want to us to look at the image and interpret that we need to fix how we live our life. The image presents a clear idea that the environment isn’t in good shape and that only we can fix the growing problem. The ad agency uses the literally elements of color, spacing, form, and focus to convey their ideas of the environment.
