Since 2008 couples have been known to take a padlock (lovelock), write their first name on it and throw the key into the Seine River to represent internal lasting love. In the image, it is shown that there are thousands of locks on the bridge that express multiple meanings. This photographer decided to have the closer locks as the focal point and have a blurred and everlasting effect as you go down the bridge. The Pont Des Arts Lovelock Bridge represents people from all over the world representing their love for one another through the use of color, scale, line, and spacing.

Color is one of the bigger elements shown here in this picture. Color can express hundreds of meanings in one picture. In this picture, color is here to show all the different types of people and couples in the world. One of the major stand out colors here is red. Red is a very emotionally intense color. It shows energy, passion, desire and love. It is a perfect way to truly enhance the meaning behind the point of this lovelock bridge. Another stand out color in this picture is yellow. Yellow reflects joy, happiness and warmth. This is also a great color to represent this bridge because it is meant to bring people happiness and surround yourself with people who make you feel like a better person. The sun illuminates this scene to be a very bright and cheerful picture. The lighter the scenery and background the more joy brought to someone’s face. Along with these specific colors that stand out more than others, there are so many more colors shown in this picture as well to show how many people from all around the world travel to this bridge to express their love and happiness with others.

A second element used in this picture is scale. In this picture the locks that are closer are clearly a larger representation of the locks and while you go further down the line they get to be a smaller and blurrier view of the locks. This photo has an allusion of the bridge going on forever trying to come to the meaning behind the picture that love and happiness is everlasting. The scale in this picture is also trying to come to the meaning that the further you distance yourself from something the less meaningful they become to you and you may even forget about them. Scale is used in this picture to show that the things closer to you have a bigger place in your heart and have more meaning to them.

Line can have multiple meanings in a picture. The positioning of a line has the ability to change the whole mood of the picture being presented. In this particular picture the lines of the boardwalk are horizontal, implying they are parallel to the earth’s surface. Horizontal lines in a picture usually suggest a calm and relaxed time being portrayed. This bridge is meant for people and couples to enjoy being together having a relaxing time, which is what these lines are suggesting in this picture. Horizontal lines also represent stability and security, meaning that whoever you are there with you will know you will have forever because they will be there to make sure you will not fall. Lines in this photo are there to signify how you will be having an enjoyable time at this bridge because you know you will be with someone that will make it an experience where you will feel safe and will not be let go.

Lastly, spacing is another major element to be shown in a visual text. Spacing is used to show a sense of unity and individuality. Meaning, that the spacing between each individual lock can show each couples unique reasoning for being together. The closer the locks are the more unity that is shown amongst the couples. The further apart the locks are, the more discrete each lock is for each couple. In this particular picture the spacing of the locks are very close to one another, showing close relationships between couples. Closeness between people is something that is healthy in a relationship and something people want. In this picture of the Pont Des Arts Bridge, the locks are all very close to one another resembling couples relationships from all over the world.

Artists capture moments in time that have multiple meanings behind them. In this photograph of the Pont Des Arts Bridge, the image is focused on all of the locks that couples from all over have put there to resemble their relationship together. With the use of color, scale, line and spacing this picture captures a significant moment that is worth a thousand words.
