In the music video Sugar, by Maroon 5, there are motifs that abound throughout. In the beginning, Adam Levine and the rest of the band members of Maroon 5 are all dressed in tuxedos. The text is directed at people who want to listen to an upbeat pop song. The band is trying to hit every wedding they can in Los Angeles in a few hours. The colors at the beginning are dark but there is always sunlight. Maroon 5 is all driving a old car black car which similarly matches the rest of the tuxedos. The camera angles are low and medium shot. The people in the music video are either looking at the camera, or they are looking at other people in the room. Adam Levine seems to look at the camera more than the other band members. All of the elements of the visual text help to create a sense of happiness and joy motif.

Throughout the music video, there are major changes in color that is seen. The colors change from black and white, to black and red, to black and purple. These changes in color happen when the band shows up at the different weddings. These colors can appeal to our emotions in that the colors that are darker may produce a more somber tone and the brighter colors may produce a more cheerful tone. There is a lot of dancing and singing in the music video. There are both outdoor and indoor scenes. Adam Levine, towards the end, is singing by himself which contrasts with the rest of the music video. At the end of the music video, Adam Levine and the rest of the band all stand for applause. There seems to be a cheerful mood throughout.

The song seems to be bright and cheery, much like the music video. The word “Sugar” in its title seems to sum up the song and music video, as it is happy. The theme is much like a celebration. The motifs continue to tell us that the song is happy because of the bright and cheerful people. The text employs various symbols such as suits and wedding dresses to symbolize a wedding. The overall design is that it is formal, yet ever-changing. This design keeps the reader engaged because the scenes constantly change and the reader is constantly immersed in changing colors. The visual text is asking the reader to analyze the different parts of the video where the wedding scenes change. The images of the car driving makes the reader feel calm, as opposed to when the music starts playing at the wedding, everyone is excited.

In conclusion, Sugar, written and produced by Maroon 5, is a music video about weddings that seems to bring upon the same cheerfulness through the music and lyrics. The word sugar is already a word that creates a sense of joy and happiness, and with the music it enhances the tone of the visual text. Although there is no written text, the visual text seems to carry on the message quite well.
