In the short story author Dale Husband is informing readers on the subject of Global Warming and the topic of Climate Change and how it is caused. The purpose of the short story is to inform readers about information regarding Climate Control; readers are informed of the current status, facts, and actual components of what things are causing the major issues of Global Warming. The short story includes factual information regarding Global Warming and its many complex layers broken down to pin point the exact issues that are causing the biggest problem currently. Husband goes into detail about two claims he makes regarding the subject of Climate Change. Dale Husband introduces one of the two key concepts or claims by addressing the first claim of misconceptions about the issue of Climate Control specifically and Global Warming as the entire scope where the issue is being focused on. His first claim is that there are several misconceptions regarding the subject matter and he informs readers to get rid of those common misconceptions. The misconceptions regarding temperatures followed by hypothesis made because of the misconceptions that are constantly made regarding the variation in the temperatures in different locations on the earth, the different zones and hemispheres. Husband says, “One of the most commonly held misconceptions about the man-made global warming hypothesis is that temperatures must increase every year and evenly over the world”, he clarifies what the common misconception is and in the next section begins to examine why the temperatures are rising on the molecular level in the atmosphere of the earth The second claim made by Husband goes into depth about the science behind the subject regarding the role of Carbon Dioxide and Water vapor in our atmosphere. His claim is that the two Carbon Dioxide and Water are the main reasons why the issues with Climate Change are occurring, along with the help of emissions like greenhouse gases. My interpretation of the short story is to be correct and actually know the information about a subject as dire as Climate Change, before assuming or accepting general information that may be deeper than what is given on the surface. Among the current issues in the world I believe one of the most prevalent that does not give us the option to pick and choose as if whether we care about it is Global Warming. The claims made by Dale Husband can be supported by evidence and factual information given from outside sources and tables provided within the text. There is a greater impact on readers than most short stories in this one because it is something that all readers can relate to as an issue. Learning what the actual issues are and what is going with the actual Climate Change issues is helpful to readers.

Dale Husband supports two claims regarding issues current on the environment on the
terms of Global Warming and Climate Change. He touches on the two things most known about regarding the two subjects of Global Warming and Climate Change. The first claim relates to the the misconceptions regarding current information on the topic of Climate Change. The fluctuation of temperatures around the world are due to improper human emissions, which are developed by the release of different types of gases being put into the atmosphere and a heavy contributor to the issue of levels being improper in the atmosphere. Dale Husband is aware of issues regarding this subject he backs his information with facts regarding this issue of the major misconceptions of the issue of Climate Change. He gives examples of what happens as a result of certain specific instances of Climate Change “…global warming actually has the paradoxical effect of causing colder winters, more snow and thus increased ice in certain places”, then the issue begins to spread into the furthermore prevalent problems that come associated with Global Warming. The issue of habitat loss in the polar ice caps due to the change in climate, many of the melting ice caps are leading to not only the loss of habitat and life of animals in major ecosystems, but the surrounding oceans as well as they began to flood and the water levels began to increase. These issues also began to impact the vegetation or plants in the different ecosystems that are not used to the fluctuation and extremities of the different temperatures. An outside primary source did tests regarding the effect of temperature on plant life, “Vegetation-climate interactions are nonlinear and complex, and hence the relationship between vegetation and climate variables still have a fierce controversy and is hard to simulate and quantify the relative contribution of individual climate factors” (Kong, Shi, Singh, Zhang), the evidence from the experiment conducted gives information supporting the claims made by Husband. The issues of this begin to cause a chain effect that will eventually revert back to where it originated, but that is when it will be declared too late to actually try to change the outcome of careless actions towards the environment. The two claims made by Dale Husband are relative topics to make claims about which makes it easy to relate the two.

Dale Husband’s second claim goes into the actual reasoning and description of the molecular makeup of the atmosphere. He touches along the basis of informing readers that most inhabitants of the earth do need the two Carbon Dioxide and Water to survive, so it is not like we could stop all usage of things emitting greenhouse gases and try and dissipate the amounts of water in the atmosphere. It is a very popular term but by definition, greenhouse gases are gasses in the atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range. That means they are simply gases that do come justice in the atmosphere but if there are too much of them present they do more harm than good. Husband mentions that Carbon Dioxide and Water are greenhouse gases which is why they are causing such havoc in our atmosphere currently. Carbon Dioxide’s role in our atmosphere on earth is to regulate temperatures from becoming too cold for survival.

The role of Water is not water in its liquid form, but water in its vapor form. The vapor levels are higher than normal causing winter to be colder in some places where that is not usually the case. The partnership between the two is explained by Husband here: “The abundance of water on Earth, plus the small amount of CO2 in our atmosphere, provide the delicate balance that maintains life on Earth”; the relationship between the two components in the atmosphere can be equated to hot and cold, basically balancing each other out so one does not become more prevalent than the other. Later he supports this sub claim of the issue of misconceptions by giving the different levels of Carbon Dioxide and Water molecules and how their levels and masses are turning into issues like Climate Change as a major issue regarding Global Warming.Husband gives evidence within the text to support parts of his second claim. The evidence contains information regarding “The proportions and molecular weights of the most common components of the Earth’s atmosphere which are: Nitrogen (78%): 28, Oxygen (21%): 32 Argon (1%): 40, CO2 (0.039%): 38, H2O (0.4%): 18” (Husband), the information regards the molecular makeup of earth’s atmosphere, revealing the unbalanced proportions of the two, Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor. Dale Husband informs us of the importance of the levels in the atmosphere, “CO2 is heavier than that average, while water vapor is MUCH lighter than that average. Thus water vapor will tend to rise much more than the other gases listed… Because CO2 is lower in the atmosphere; it traps heat closer to the surface. Trapped heat causes evaporation. The H2O quickly rises and as it does, it cools” (Husband). The water molecules in the atmosphere during the weather are gathering and forming clouds, then blocking out the sun causing temperatures to drop leading to freezing, snowing, etc., due to the excessive amounts of water molecules being present in the atmosphere. From an outside source that supports Dale
Husband’s claim and information given regarding the effect on ice around the world, “However, more recent circulation and mixing models predict that the effect of increased nutrient uptake on atmospheric CO^ concentrations would be much lower, and that a more efficient Southern Ocean biological CO, pump alone cannot explain lower CO, levels during ice ages (Watson et al. 2000). Stephens and Keeling (2000) suggested that low atmospheric CO, levels during glacial periods may result from reduced deep-water ventilation associated with year round Antarctic sea-ice coverage or wintertime coverage, combined with ice-induced stratification during summer” (Bargagli 100). Evidence from experimentation provides information from oceans and how the circulation of Carbon Dioxide effects the oceans.

The information given regarding the effects of the different molecular weights and proportions relates directly to what Husband is referring to when he addresses the issues of Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor and their roles as greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The issues in the atmosphere are not necessarily issues that we can control but there are several ways we can cut down on emissions to help the overall cause of Global Warming. The overall issue causes a “paradoxical” change in climate of the area, the instances that we have noticed have been in the Northern regions of the world where the polar caps are beginning to melt which is harming the ecosystems surrounding the areas. The issues that we see as simple and not having a huge effect on anyone or anything is actually where we are mistaken. It causes a chain reaction not only is the temperature something that changes but it causes the many different ecosystems of certain areas to be effected as well. The two factors that are causing these changes are the simple everyday components of the earth’s atmosphere, Carbon Dioxide and Water molecules. Despite having the necessary knowledge to be able to speak on the topic effectively, there is a way in fact that everyone can try to help the cause of Global Warming.

Of the current global issues that are in fact known by a widespread amount of people, it is something that eventually will affect everyone no matter race, social status, ethnicity, gender, sex, etc. Global Warming is a current issue that is a problem that we all are facing and simply ignoring when that should not be the case. Instead of fighting with each other because of different loyalty to locations on the earth, qualified scientist of these different areas should work together towards solving this global issue. Everybody has a role they can play in solving the issue. Every day common people can even play their role whether it is recycling, saving electricity, finding alternate sources for fuel, etc. The government can play their role in enforcing different restrictions nationwide or worldwide to help solve the problem. The resources are available to make this global change, it is just up to us to make the difference before it is too late to make a change and still be effective in what we decide to do. The short story also mentions the common misconceptions of things perceived or thought to be known about Global Warming.

With the help of those who do know, everyone could be enlightened of the necessary knowledge to contribute to the greater cause of trying to lessen or change the outcome of impacts on the earth’s atmosphere that we are responsible for.

The issue of Global Warming is an issue that we will all soon face. The smaller category of Climate Change in the broad view of Global Warming is an issue that we can actually try to control. In the short story authored by Dale Husband it is apparent that he is in fact informed very well on the subject at hand. He informs us as readers the scientific aspect of what occurs in the light of Climate Change to allow us to understand the aspect that we cannot necessarily control, so we do know what is actually occurring in our atmosphere. Husband informs readers of the common misconceptions that might be the information that common people might assume to be factual information, being that it will probably be information that shows up when looking up information regarding the topic. Dale Husband’s claim about the misconceptions is supported by other outside information from the credited sources provided in the text. The use of the outside source can refute any discussion of his claim to be untrue. The second claim made by Husband regarding information along the terms of the actual molecular makeup of the atmosphere also can be supported by information from other sources that make conclusive analysis agreeing with the claim. The two Carbon Dioxide and Water (vapor) are the main issues in the view of why certain things are beginning to occur more drastically in the different ecosystems of the planet. Along with the help of human emissions that contribute as greenhouse gases in the atmosphere causing more harmful conditions in the atmosphere. In conclusion the short story authored by Dale Husband informs readers effectively of the misconceptions and Climate Change as a smaller subtopic of Global Warming.
