Here in the 21st century there have been more advancements in technology than ever before, with the introduction of cellphones, tablets, computers and even robots. In many cases these advances can be beneficial yet detrimental to society. The photograph uses sight alignment, proximity, and color to show the tension between man and robot in order to argue the arising benefits and issues with modern technology, central intelligence and disconnection from nature. The photo highlights humans disconnect from nature by the inclusion of blurred plants in the background between the woman and the robot. In addition to these aspects the image uses colors such as red and white to signal warnings and enlightenment about our relationships with technology.

In the photo the woman is staring intensely at the robot or CI (central intelligence) as she moves her chess piece. The alignment of the CI and the woman’s eyes places them at the same level; by them being placed at the same level this way it is meant to place them at the same level intellectually also. This equality between the woman and the robot can be both negative and positive. For example, the picture makes it seem as if the CI is making her think intensely while he smiles with ease. Through a small game of chess, the robot is making the woman a better thinker and problem solver by having an opponent at the same intellectual level as her. The same intellect that is challenging the woman to be better however, can also be harmful for her. In the photo, she is making eye contact with the robot and not completely focused on the chess game itself. The meaning of this connection is to identify how humans focus our attention on technology and disconnect from many of the task at hand. This can be harmful because, by directing attention on technology our judgment and sight of things outside of the digital world are lost in reality.

If one looks in the center of the photo in the far back, there is a blurred image of nature. This disfigurement of nature displayed in the picture is used to identify a way in which technology or CI’s can be harmful to us and our environment. In proximity to the woman and CI the plants are far in the distance and distorted. The plant is also placed in the center of the photo between the CI and the woman. The placement if the plant is significant because it shows how nature is neglected and caught in between man and technology. Rather than being outside or tending to nature the woman is inside playing with the robot or technology. A white form of light is causing the plant distortion, since light or the sun is what is being used to distort the plant, the placement of the plant uses the sunlight to bring to light the reality of humans forgetting nature in order to stay in with technology. The image also ties in a bit of irony by having the woman play against technology rather than play with a form of technology, like a phone or tablet. By having her engage in actual activity with the technology it gives the CI a more realistic aspect making it more human and less robot. The CI having facial expressions also help to give it human characteristics, this is the image way of displaying personification like in text. It is important that this connection between robot and man is made because the image is telling society that the more humans encounter technology and advance it the more humans will become one with it.

The presents of technology can be a beautiful thing. However, with this beauty comes a sense of danger and loss of control. In the photograph this danger is symbolized by the red shirt the woman is wearing. Red in the photograph is used as a warning to us that the use of technology can be dangerous. The photograph shows this danger in many ways like neglecting nature and losing focus of the task at hand by engaging with technology. The woman has less control in the chess game because she has placed her focus on the CI and its actions. Also by giving in to interacting with the CI the woman is not interacting with nature and the environment. The color white in the photograph is used several times in various areas, to distort the plant, the color of the CI, and the color of the woman’s pieces in the chess game. In each instance the color means the same thing yet something different. For the whites being used to distort the plants highlights the woman’s mistake of leaving nature behind to engage with technology. The white used to color the robot is also a device for enlightenment, because technology allows humans a chance to expand their minds therefore, enlightening our brains. Lastly, the white chess pieces the woman is playing with are used to identify submission to technology. In many cases, such as war or battle the white flag means “I surrender or submit,” so there is no coincidence that the woman is playing with the white chess pieces, symbolizing her submission. The image has her using the white chess pieces rather than the black ones to identify the way in which people in society also submit to technology and let it control them.

Technology is present, it is a glorious thing that should be cherished, never taken for granted and overall never underestimated. With the image came the identification of both positive and negative effects on people and society due to the introduction of central intelligence. These positive and negative attributes were able to be drawn from the photograph with the inclusion of colors like reds and whites, sight alignment between the woman and robot and even its proximity and distortion of nature.
