Alice in Wonderland wasn’t the first Disney film created but it was one of the earliest and was released in 1951. Compared to some other original Disney films, the movie took a different approach through its characters and story. It was almost as if Disney was trying to target kids who create these imaginary places or friends. Just from the title, it is understood that Alice is in another world. By watching the movie, more information is given to understand that Alice created the world, even when she didn’t realize it. The original Alice in Wonderland was animated and also had a few songs incorporated into it. Disney recreated Alice in Wonderland in 2010, but this time it had real people along with animations to help sustain the plot. The movie wasn’t the same as the original one because in order to obtain people to watch the new version, there needed to be some unexpected twists, but with the same story to be able to called it Alice in Wonderland. Alice traveled back to Wonderland and like many other movies, there was this good versus evil plot. Alice Through the Looking Glass made its debut in 2016 and all the original famous cast members were in this movie, with a few added characters, because this movie is entirely different from the previous one. Through this poster, it is easy to see who might be the main character in this film, which are the good versus evil plots, and why the movie got its name.

Just by looking at this poster, it is clear to see that the main character or the main story is undoubtedly going to be about the person in the middle, because a person’s first glance is usually directly in the middle and then around the center of attention. The person in the middle is known as the Mad Hatter, otherwise known as Johnny Depp. Telling by the hat on his head and his very intense makeup, his name comes from some very important background information. In the other film, he was an important character because he helped Alice, but by no means the main one. However, being directly in the middle forces anyone looking at this poster to look at him first. The title has Alice’s name included but states through the looking glass. When looking at this poster, the Mad Hatter is directly in front of a glass like figure or even a mirror. This also indicates that he might be the main problem throughout the movie and Alice is looking for him or after him. When looking at his body form, it looks a bit distressed. He has his hands backwards and it looks as if he is holding the weight of the mirror, which could signify the weight of his worries. Even though he is smiling, his eyes make him seem very unhappy. With the conclusion that he could be the main character, the mood set off by his posture and facial expression, leads to believe that he is upset or in serious danger.

Since the title does have Alice’s name in it, and the other movies were based off of her, the next thing that stands out is her position on the poster. She is directly across this character in which fans of Alice in Wonderland have never seen before. In terms, this is already odd, but since he is included in the poster, he must play a very important role in the film or else it would be unnecessary for him to be included. The man is dressed in all black and is wearing this kind of armor looking jacket and hat. The armor could conclude that he is always fighting and knows he needs protection. It could also have something to do with the background that is made from metal. Which in terms could put him directly in the middle of Mad Hatter’s problems. The color black usually symbolizes death or danger. This leads to believe that he could be evil in the sense that he has the power to terminate. His facial expression is also very bold. His eyebrows are very arched which is usually from anger, and he looks as if he is frowning. Meanwhile, Alice standing directly across could symbolize the good versus evil. Alice is wearing a very colorful dress that sort of follows the same color schemes as the Mad Hatter’s outfit. This could show the relationship between them and how she is on his side. Alice’s facial expression looks scared and worried and she is looking in the Mad Hatters direction. This could symbolize the threat from the man in the black towards the Mad Hatter and how she wants to protect him from danger. Since Mad Hatter and Alice had such a firm relationship in the previous movie and he helped her survive, it would make sense that Alice would do anything to help him.

The last two humans on the poster were very significant roles in the previous film. Before, the good versus evil theme was based around these two. The woman on the left is the White Queen otherwise known as Anne Hathaway. The woman on the right is the Red Queen otherwise known as Helena Bonham Carter. Both of their character names help give context clues to the story. The color white symbolizes purity and cleanness, whereas red symbolizes blood and anger. Having completely contradictory characters directly across from each other, helps illustrate the opposition from them. The White Queen is wearing a beautiful light colored dress, whereas the Red Queen is wearing a dark colored suit that is similar in shape to the man dressed in black, which could mean that she is working with him. The White Queen gives off this idea that someone is in trouble because of the calm but terror look on her face. When looking at people’s faces, it is usually easy to see in their eyes if they are happy, sad, or angry. Of course, a smile or frown is more helpful, but it is easy to fake an expression. When looking in the eyes, wrinkles are a sign of happiness, tears are a sign of sadness, and when the eyes are squinted a little bit, it means anger. The White Queen is not actually doing anything with her mouth, but her eyes are very bold. However, the Red Queen gives off this sassy look that whatever is happening is for the best because her lips are puckered and her head is slanted. When someone puckers their lips, they are either being sarcastic or blowing a kiss. Since many context clues give the idea that something bad is happening to the Mad Hatter, it is odd that she would be so sarcastic and happy. However, she seems to be on the guys evil side.

The other important observation made from this poster are the old characters from the previous film placed at the top of the poster. The White Rabbit is holding a vintage pocket watch. This could help discover the period in which the movie is trying to portray. It also can conclude that something or someone is running out of time because of how the White Rabbit is pointing to the clock. Tweedledee and Tweedledum are the two characters next to the rabbit. In the previous film they acted as a guide to help Alice. In this poster they are wearing clothes similar to sailor men. This helps with the time because sailors were around before modern transportation like cars and airplanes and they were a means for direction. This could mean that they are in this movie to help Alice go in the right direction. The cat known as the famous Cheshire Cat who is always very wise and pops up in the previous film at random moments, looks as if he is floating above the mirror. This could lead to the possibility that he is again just here to provide helpful hints. The cat also looks very happy like he knows that the outcome of the movie will be positive because he is a good character but is not concerned like the others.

To take things farther into consideration, the background is very important. Even though the poster is filled with many characters and lots of color details, the background helps discover the plot. The title leads to believe that the movie has something to do with a looking glass. However, in the background there are several clocks and gadgets that look like they would construct some sort of clock tower or building. The color of the background is almost entirely a bronze color that looks like rust. This also leads to the clocks being old, and the plot being based on time. Rust is also typically correlated with water and having Tweedledee and Tweedledum in sailor outfits, concludes that in some point one of the characters, more than likely Alice, is on a boat. With other clues that bring a sort of danger into play, the clocks could represent the running out of time situation.

The poster itself has a lot of information happening on it. Disney could have gone in so many different directions when creating this poster. However, having so many characters and colors used on this one single poster helps put the story line in perspective. They also help bring the audience in, by creating such a diverse scenario. The use of very popular and famous people also helps to contribute to a larger community. Johnny Depp has starred in so many movies and has been a very well-known actor for several years. By being such a big hit, Disney might have wanted to create a film similar to Alice in Wonderland, that was almost entirely based on him. Anne Hathaway is another very famous actor. It was an excellent choice by Disney to cast her as the Snow Queen because she not only does a good job playing her role, but she has had many roles in films where she was the protagonist. By putting the characters in a ring, it shows that all have some major importance in the movie because they are all equal in size. By putting Alice and the White Queen on the left and the Red Queen and the mysterious guy in black on the right, the formation of good versus evil is created. Without seeing this film, it is easy to come to many of these conclusions mentioned because of the great detail created by Disney.
