The story that I used from Unit 3 was “Barbie Doll,” by Marge Piercy which deals with the world view on feminism.

In this day and age, feminism is a hot topic that is receiving a lot of attention. People all over the world are directly affected due to being discriminated against because of their gender. There is a clear difference in the world that men in some cases are receiving better treatment than women such as pay, preferable treatment, and better overall considerations and views. There are people such as public figures, artists, authors, or just normal everyday people who are putting their foot in regard to feminism. Especially because more than three billion people in the world are women.

In the article, Varieties of Feminism, by Myra Marx Ferree, describes that drastic difference regarding feminism in different parts of the world. Specifically, Ferree goes into great detail comparing the views of feminism between the United States of America and Germany. As well as talking to us about how she spent a good chunk of her life in Germany. While in Germany, she was a serious advocator to women’s rights, and she describes her opinions is a bright light by using comedy and her own personality. Ferrer also describes the feminism problems that take place in specific Islamic countries.

Ferree makes a lot of great points in a very positive and helpful way. One obvious reason that makes Ferree understandable is that she is a woman. Also, while she does stick to the main point of advocating for women rights, she also does throw in a couple of her own opinions. Which makes her opinions very valid because she is living in the real world where women are not treated fairly. She also constantly gives real world example of how women are not being treated fairly, such as health care, religious opinions, and the freedom to express yourself. One thing that also makes Ferree very credible is that she doesn’t just talk about her own experience back in the day, she also talks about the growth and development of women rights of the recent decades. This is a very important part because it shows how many people are heading into action in order to make change.

Another person who believes strongly in equality amongst women and men is Wendy McElroy. McElroy was an instructor at Marymount University and has written countless articles and book in regards to some of society’s most challenging issues. She has written articles on topics such as prostitution, free liberty, and of course, feminism. McElroy wrote an article in 2001 called “Individualism: A New View of Feminism.” She states in her article that in an ideal society, “the legal system would make no distinction based upon secondary characteristics, such as sex, but would protect the rights each individual equally.” McElroy believes that there should be no distinction between traits such as sex, but she acknowledges that this society does not exist. And because she acknowledges this fact, she states that “women need to stand up and demand their full and equal rights. No more, no less.” Wendy McElroy makes some great points in regards to feminism in the world. I believe that she hit the nail of the head when she said women should stand up and demand for their rights, but not ask for any more or any less than they deserve. That women deserve equality in the real world but do not deserve more than men. That when she talks about equality amongst secondary characters, I feel this should go both ways. Such as if a man is accused of sexual assault on a woman, the punishment should be the same as if a women assaulted a man. McElroy is a great point of view because she deals with the issue of feminism by stating exactly what needs to change. That the way to fix feminism isn’t by giving women more rights, it should be fixed by giving the same rights that men have to the female population without discrimination.

In the article, “Equality Deferred: Sex discrimination and British Columbia’s Human Rights State”, by Dominique Clement, describes the progression and the problems of human rights issues in British Columbia. Clement describes all of the legislations made in order to create equality of promote women’s rights. Clement also talks about how ever though legislations are made for the culture to head in the right direction of change, he understands and acknowledges that there are always restraints that come with. Consequently, to Ferree, Clement has a more direct and serious outlook on how the word works and thinks. Clement states that the

government is “dominated by men whose policies demonstrated little understanding of sex discrimination.”

Dominique Clement is a great source for the essay about women’s rights. For instance, the fact that the setting for the article is set in Canada, British Columbia allows for an understanding of how different parts of the world are affected by Feminism. Clement provides us with a serious outlook that allows the reader to see the problem and reflect on it. He provides an emotional representation that catches the reader’s attention and allows for an eye opening experience. Clement also doesn’t just talk about the problems of how people view feminism, he talks about the problems that large organizations and governments have with women’s rights. This article is a very great source for the essay and is a great read in general for people that want the truth about women’s rights.

One common idea that has been circulating throughout the world but specifically the United States of America was the recent 2016 election. As you may know, Donald J. Trump won the election against more than capable Hillary Clinton. While some saw this as a fair and interesting election, many viewed this as a feminist and unruly outcome. Countless people all over the world viewed it as Trump was victorious because is a man and Clinton fell short because she is a woman. This is a very serious topic and received lots of attention and publicity. And I am sure that writers such as Ferree, Clement, McElroy, and even Piercy are going to have a major impact in this world and change the worlds view on feminism.
