In the selected photograph, multiple children are found in a classroom. This classroom is obviously located somewhere other than America, in a foreign country that is not quite so wealthy. Each of the children are raising their hands and have happy, excited expressions on their faces. The background and surroundings, the view of the children and the show of their emotions, as well as the color throughout, aids in developing the overall theme of the photograph. This theme can easily be identified as the appreciation and excitement shown towards earning an education and making progress towards one’s future.

The background and surroundings of the photograph show that the country in which the classroom is located is one that is not very wealthy. No evidence of technology can be found, showing that they have not reached that sort of level of advancement in the classroom. This is probably due to it being so unaffordable to them. There does not seem to be much lighting in the room. Also, the walls look very old and fairly dirty. There is not much color on them either. It is very plain, simple, and unexciting. Compared to what is experienced in a first world country such as America, this area seems to be fairly poor. Growing up, it was typical to find colorful posters in classrooms, plenty of lighting, and many advanced tools used for learning. Dry erase boards, overhead projectors, and Smart Boards were found in the learning environment as well. Advanced technology for personal use, such as computers, laptops, and tablets are also found and used. The children in this photograph seem to be strictly using textbooks, paper, and pencils. While these materials are still used in countries like America, many other uses of technology are common too. Even the desks and chairs are different and not quite as nice as what is usually found in the classroom for those in America. Because of the poor conditions of the classroom, it is easy to assume that the children in the photograph most likely do not have much. Going to school to get an education is probably found to be a huge privilege and luxury to them.

The photograph mainly focuses on the children and their expressions, which shows that it is obvious that they are very excited and eager to learn. Their emotions show nothing less than enjoyment, with their hands raised high, with absolute excitement. Most of them have their mouths wide open and their eyes are gleaming with happiness. These children are without a doubt appreciative to have the ability to attend school. It is evident that they want the best possible future they can get. They care about their education and desperately want to participate in the classroom. It is a joy to them just to be present. How often do children in America dread going to school, sit back inattentive, and have no desire to learn at all? The answer is an infinite amount. The attitude towards school and earning an education is not always portrayed in the manner that is seen in the photograph. Many of those in America have negative attitudes about getting up each morning, doing work, and attending school each day. This photograph specifically targets countries like America to show how often school and getting an education is taken for granted. These children have a lot less compared to those in wealthier countries. However, they find something to be happy about. This something for them is school.

The photograph, ultimately, lacks color and can be described as fairly dull. Although the photograph does not seem to be negative according to the expressions of the children, it still stems from something negative, or sad. As previously stated, it is obvious that the children in the classroom live in a poor, foreign country. The dull coloring of the photograph reminds us of this, despite how happy everyone seems to be. It draws out a feeling of sympathy from the viewer and makes them understand how much harder others’ situations in this world actually are. It also makes one feel a lot more grateful for what they actually do have. Not everyone is privileged enough to experience the process of getting an education, and even those that do, that may be one of the only privileges they receive. Imagine barely or only eating enough to survive, sharing one room with your entire family, or only owning one outfit. If this were the case for anyone, it is more than likely that they would be thrilled to at least get to experience going to school every day as an escape from reality. Earning an education also means advancing and growing into one’s future. It could open doors to all sorts of opportunities, especially for one who has not always had it “made” while growing up.

Overall, the photograph captures a moment of joy seen in a group of children as they attend school, which is very much a privilege to them. They obviously live in a poor area and do not live the most luxurious life. Their classroom is not full of the most advanced and latest technology at all. However, they are still grateful and excited to be sitting in their desks learning and working towards their future. It goes to show that something that others may believe is so small and unimportant can be extremely valuable to others, especially those who do not have much. The photograph influences viewers to care about their education, as well as their future that so highly depends on it. Learning can be fun and exciting, which many fail to realize, especially those in first world countries like America. They seem to have it “made” compared to these children shown in the photograph. Because of this, it is common for them to take the privilege of attending school and earning an education for granted. These children, however, have found joy in learning. They are so eager to participate and be involved. Because of this, they have shown the great appreciation that should be felt towards attending school, earning an education, and making progress towards the future.
