The painting “Old Couple or Musician” by Salvador Dali was done in 1930 and depicts four different illusions. There is an old couple staring at each other, perhaps remembering what one another looked like when they were younger. Meanwhile, there is a woman in the back of the old man’s head, suggesting he is recalling another woman he once lusted after. Additionally, there are two musicians hiding within the faces and a golden chalice between them. This painting shows multiple illusions that contain various meanings that are all being implied at once, and the spectator can assume that they each contribute to the significance of the painting overall.

First, one must consider the time period in which the painting was done and the style of the artist to closely interpret it. Salvador Dali was a preeminent leader in the surrealism movement during the twentieth century, and incorporated many illusions in his artwork that made it difficult to distinguish between dreams and reality. This painting is captivating due to its bizarre nature and profusion of hidden objects within another. Also, the painting is said to have a dark style, due to the skeletal structure of the faces (deep wrinkles) and eerie nature of the unusual illusions. It is also important to note that the structure of this surreal painting contains components that have different meanings but fit together as a whole. The spectator can see that the components all signify the meaning of the painting simultaneously, and the role of the spectator is to realize that each illusion ties into one another.

The first image that comes to my attention when I look at this painting is the old couple staring deeply into each other’s faces. The couple is reflecting on their younger years and looking back to when they were each enthusiastic and full of life. Nonetheless, the relationship between the man and woman does not look mutual due to the facial expressions of each. The woman’s jaw is slightly raised, producing a smirk and her eyes are wide open suggesting she is happy to see her presumed husband. However, the man’s expression is very bland and uninterested. Within the faces exists an illusion of two musicians playing. Perhaps the most interesting contradiction in the painting is that the musician playing with a happy expression is within the face of the unhappy man. Likewise, the other musician who looks very unpleasant is within the delighted woman’s face. Another illusion is the woman’s earring as a bottle, likely containing alcohol, which demonstrates that the musician is depressed and living a troubled life. This contradiction supports the idea of internal conflict and an individual’s struggle between displaying their authentic emotions. The contrast between the two musician’s faces is very drastic, and the unpleasant musician seems to be giving the other musician a grimace look, likely out of jealousy or resentment. The other musician seems to be enjoying himself and unaware of the other’s displeasure.

Furthermore, there is another illusion of a woman in the back of the old man’s head. Her physical location implies that the old man is thinking about her “in the back of his mind” as she emerges out of a door. The painting suggests that the old man once lusted after this woman, and never truly was in love with the woman he married/ is staring at in the face. The bond between the couple feels detached and distant due to the mysterious woman that the man is thinking about. On the other hand, the woman in the back of the man’s head could be a younger version of the woman he is staring at. The man could be reminiscing on when the woman was young and beautiful, and now is discontent with her current appearance. In this interpretation, the man could represent how true love cannot be based solely on appearances due to the tired and worn out expression he holds.

Another illusion within the painting is the golden chalice that is between the old couple.

A chalice connotes the Christian church and represents a strong religious aspect in the painting. Golden chalices symbolize the Last Supper and Consecration. It also can signify separation from evil, suggesting that the couples relationship was pure. Because the chalice is between the two faces, it may symbolize the couple’s religious aspect of their relationship and how religion is used to support their marriage. In contrast, if the man is thinking about another woman than the one he is looking at, the chalice could represent his infidelity to his wife and lust of another woman. The man could be feeling guilty for his sins, which is why he cannot stare the women happily in the face.

Overall, the painting “Old Couple or Musicians” utilizes illusions and a dark theme to convey the struggle between the content and the discontent. The deep stare exchanged between the old couple and the distinction between the musicians represents the struggle of life that one can experience. The women in the man’s head signifies the discontent he has with his current wife, which further supports the theme of struggle and depression. At first glance, there seems to be illogical items in the painting that have no correlation, however, when one closely examines each object there is a noticeable relationship that translates into a greater, unabridged meaning. The different components of the painting all coexist at the same time and signify the meaning of the painting concurrently. Although each illusion is its own, the spectator can assume that each one shares a common significance.
