Joyas Valadores is an essay unlike most others. It is not structured like most other essays and has a lot of major English flaws. These flaws end up making the essay better though and help enhance the theme more. The exaggerated spelling, excessive superlatives, fragmented sentences, dynamic tone, and structure are all elements not seen in most essays but they come together to show that Doyle is comparing the animals and humans together and trying to show how we are all somewhat similar. The incorporation of these elements serves an important purpose to show our similarities and to out us on more of an equal footing rather than a pedestal with these other animals. This is the main theme of the essay and the elements back it up greatly to show this is true.

The way that Doyle structures his essay and how he starts and ends his essay really helps make the theme of this essay. He goes from talking about the hummingbird, to the whale, to humans and facts about each species. He also brings up heartbeats and how the heart works in each of the species. He says things like “The biggest heart in the world is inside the blue whale” (Doyle 95). All these facts are led to fascinate you about these creatures and he gives you facts that not only intrigue you but make you have some emotion toward these creatures. He does a great job at leading up to the final paragraph about humans and how the lives of humans are and the stuff we go through in our daily lives. This really gives a sense to the reader about how he is trying to give you an emotional attachment to all the species in the essay and showing we all aren’t so different. This structuring of paragraphs shows how the theme is tied together. The way it starts out talking about their hearts and their lifestyles and habits to showing how humans react to things and how it makes them feel brings out the theme of how the author is just trying to relate the species to each other and how they all are alike in this world even though they are so different at the same time.

Doyle writes this essay in a very quirky way and not the usual standards that people use when they write. He uses a lot of exaggerated spelling and excessive superlatives throughout the essay. When he talks about the whales size he says “It Is waaaaay bigger than your car” (Doyle 95). These are the type of sentences that Doyle uses to put emphasis on what he is talking about. This added emphasis allows the reader to not only become more intrigued with the essay but more likely to remember what was said and relate it back to us as humans. Doyle allows us to see what he sees in how fascinating these creatures are by exaggerating their attributes and gives us a better sense of how these creatures are special just like us. This in turn leads to his real theme of how all the animals are all specials in some way and that not just humans but all the organisms on this planet have special qualities to them.

The dynamic and offbeat tone of this essay along with the fast rhythm help make the theme what it is. Doyle’s fast pace and ever changing tone give the reader a feel for the excitement he has throughout the essay and adds to the enhancement of what he is saying and how important it is. For example, when talking about the hummingbird he says “each one visits a thousand flowers a day. They can drive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backwards. They can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest” (Doyle 95). This can be a lot at times but it also gives the essay kind of a fast and excited tone and it makes you see how special Doyle thinks these creatures are and it just gives the reader a feel that everything he talks about has a little more emphasis and excitement to it. He is always constantly giving you facts and facts and it just gives you more insight and a better feel for these creatures as a whole and really makes you think more about them and not just blow them off as a lesser being. This is what I think Doyle wants to get at to show we aren’t the only organisms in this world that are special.

The whole theme of Doyle’s essay is that all the animals and species on this planet are special and are more alike than people think. He gives the reader the sense we are all just kind of one heart beating on this planet and that we may be different in a lot of ways but at the same time we all have a heart that keeps us living, breathing, moving, ect. Doyle makes this point clear when he says “no being is without interior liquid motion. We all churn inside” (Doyle 96). He again uses these fragmented sentences to show how he is comparing us to all the other organisms, even the worms and bacteria. This is said before he starts talking about us and how we function and how the essay compares to us. This is a clear piece of evidence of how he is relating us all as he says “we all churn inside” showing how us and the other organisms all have something in common and how we are all not so different. The fragmented sentence and how he ordered the paragraphs was a great way to lead into the summary of the human point of view at the end, which left the reader thinking about how we are kind of like these guys and how we all might churn inside.

Joyas Valadoeres was an essay not like many others. It had a lot of errors and things about it that weren’t like many other essays. The flaws of the essay though are what make it so great and are what help develop the overall theme. The lack of structure, the fragmented sentences, the spelling errors, and dynamic tone all lead to the reader feeling more relatable to these animals and thinking maybe we aren’t so different after all. The elements that make up this story really emphasize the theme of this essay and showed that even though we might look different than these other creatures, we are all still the same and we are all just one heart beating on this planet
