Joyas Valadores is a very odd essay that isn’t structured like most other essays and has a lot of major English flaws. These flaws end up making the essay better though and help enhance the theme more. The exaggerated spelling, made up words, excessive superlatives, incomplete thoughts and fragmented sentences all are elements not seen in most essays but they come together to show that Doyle is comparing the animals and humans together and trying to show how we are all somewhat similar. This is the main theme of the story and the elements back it up greatly to show this is true.

The way that Doyle structures his essay and how he starts and ends his story really helps make the theme of this story. He goes from talking about the hummingbird, to the whale, to humans and facts about each species. He also brings up heartbeats and how the heart works in each of the species. He says things like “The biggest heart in the world is inside the blue whale”(Carolina reader page 95). All these facts are led to fascinate you about these creatures and he gives you facts that not only intrigue you but make you have some emotion toward these creatures. He does a great job at leading up to the final paragraph about humans and how the lives of humans are and the stuff we go through in our daily lives. This really gives a sense to the reader about how he is trying to give you an emotional attachment to all the species in the essay and showing we all aren’t so different. This structuring of paragraphs shows how the theme is tied together. The way it starts out talking about their hearts and their lifestyles and habits to showing how humans react to things and how it makes them feel brings out the theme of how the author is just trying to relate the species to each other and how they all are alike in this world even though they are so different at the same time.

Doyle writes this story in a very quirky way and not the usual standards that people use when they write. He uses a lot of exaggerated spelling and excessive superlatives throughout the story. When he talks about the whales size he says “It Is waaaaay bigger than your car” (Carolina reader page 95). These are the type of sentences and spelling errors that Doyle uses to put emphasis on what he is talking about. Doyle does this also to really get his point across of how fascinating these creatures are, like when he talks about the whale he goes on and on about how big the whale is and I think this really helps drive his point home of how huge these creatures are. This in turn leads to his real theme of how all the animals are all specials in some way and that not just humans but all the organisms on this planet have special qualities to them.

The erratic tone of this story along with the fast rhythm help make the theme what it is. The way Doyle just keeps coming at you with every sentence back to back without even much of a transition word really can be a lot at times. For example, when talking about the hummingbird he says “each one visits a thousand flowers a day. They can drive at sixty miles an hour. They can fly backwards. They can fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest”(Carolina reader page 95). This can be a lot at times but it also gives the story kind of a fast and excited tone and it makes you see how special Doyle thinks these creatures are and it just gives the reader a feel that everything he talks about has a little more emphasis and excitement to it. He is always constantly giving you facts and facts and it just gives you more insight and a better feel for these creatures as a whole and really makes you think more about them and not just blow them off as a lesser being. This is what I think Doyle wants to get at to show we aren’t the only organisms in this world that are special.

The whole theme of Doyle’s story is that all the animals and species on this planet are special and are more alike than people think. He gives the reader the sense we are all just kind of one heart beating on this planet and that we may be different in a lot of ways but at the same time we all have a heart that keeps us living, breathing, moving, ect. Doyle makes this point clear when he says “no being is without interior liquid motion. We all churn inside” (Carolina reader page 96). This shows how he is comparing us more to all the other organisms, even the worms and bacteria. This is said before he starts talking about us and how we function and how the essay compares to us. This is a clear piece of evidence and how he is comparing all of the species in this essay and how he ordered the paragraphs was a great way to lead into this and to summarize the human point of view at the end was a great way to structure his essay and get the theme across.

Joyas Valadoeres was a story not like many others. It had a lot of errors and things about it that weren’t like many other stories. The flaws of the story though are what make it so great and are what help develop the overall theme. The lack of structure, the fragments, the spelling errors, every aspect and element help lead to this essay being what it is. The theme of all of us coming together and even though we might look different we are all still the same and we are all just one heart beating on this planet are made by the odd elements and make the theme of the whole entire story.
